Final score in Lille is 7-1 to PSG, including a hattrick for Mbappe, a brace for Neymar and a goal for Messi. The last goal smarted a bit because there was a handball in the box at the other end before PSG broke and hit Lille on the counter, but I think the VAR was probably on strike at that point - such is the French aversion to work that even the ref blew the final whistle 9 seconds before the 90 minutes were up.

A lazy, xenophobic stereotype at the end there of course (though he did actually blow up a bit early, presumably to spare Lille’s blushes)

How is De Ketelaere playing?

Comes on as a sub around 60 minutes and instantly looks a different class. At Atalanta he came on and opened their defence up immediately so they man marked him from then on and it quietened him down.

Wish Pioli would start him over Brahim but Pioli has his favourites.

Rangers and Celtic both make the Champions League group stage.

First time that's happened since 2007/08.
The media coverage down here will be insufferable then. Having to listen to anything about Scottish football is the one and only thing that makes me want Sturgeon to succeed!

No matter how many times that poisonous old bag reduces the voting age to about 12 while showing Braveheart on a continuous loop on BBC Scotland it won't be enough to win an independence referendum that won't be granted anyway

So we'll just have to carry on being bored by reports on Jock football & their boring sectarianism

Personally I'd just tell em f*** off out the union because we can't fund their methadone during this cost of living crisis

Half time, St. Pauli 0, Paderborn 1

84 minutes, St.Pauli 1, Paderborn 1

92 minutes, St. Pauli 1, Paderborn 2

93 minutes, St. Pauli 2, Paderborn 2

Bonkers.

I’m going early here but I’ve a feeling @Strummer will be front row centre from 2pm GMT tomorrow with bier in hand and not moving ( much) until 6-30pm, having taken in two top flight games 🤔

There might be something in this!

VfB away at Köln, followed by Forest against the Spuds.

My kind of Sunday Afternoon.

The Referee calls a temporary halt to the match between Bayern and Gladbach, due to an outburst of pyrotechincs:

Bayern 0-1 down, despite having two goals chalked-off for offside.

Referee isn't at his best tonight, I guess and I'm not talking about disallowed goals. Booking Sabitzer for a dive by Gladbach player, not giving yellows to BMG's players for tactical fouls etc.
But to be honest Sommer is incredible tonight, he's the main reason Bayern can't scorre.

So FC Vaduz, from the Swiss 2nd division have made the Europa League group stages.

They get into qualification by winning the Leichenstein Cup, which they have won 50 times in 60 years.

Had me thinking, what is stopping the Welsh teams in the English league system from entering the Welsh Cup and getting into the European qualifiers that way. Surely that is better than being in the FA / League Cup?

Bayern 1, Gladbach 1.

Yes, they grabbed an equaliser, but Gladbach deserved the win, Yann Sommer in goal was incredible for Die Fohlen.

Bayern, clearly, are not impregnable.

Interesting. Two places I have lived in Germany. I'm counting St Pauli as Hamburg though I did go to school in Altona so went through St Pauli every school day.

For those interested in the business-side of Football, the excellent @SwissRamble on Twitter has a detailed analysis of FC Bayern‘s recent financial performance, showing in stark terms how their enormous financial muscle gives them an almost-uncatchable advantage in the Bundesliga, and bankrolls their European campaigns:

It shows clearly how Bayern‘s business has grown, compared to other Bundesliga sides, and how their commercial income dwarfs that of the rest of the Bundesliga, and indeed many other top European sides.

A long thread, but a very worthwhile read.

I read the other day they were discussing making the German championship a play off between either the top two, or the top four such is the expected continued dominance of Bayern. Not sure if it would work nor why its Bayerns fault they are so dominant. The model certainly does seem to benefit them and success breeds more supporters or "members" though. I have always wondered why they never publicly enquired about Haland.

Twatter so a no from me but it amazes me these German clubs like Schalke and Koln guarantee 50k at every game, huge fanbases but perform so badly overall. Must be run so badly.

Bayern‘s CEO (and former Goalkeeper) Oliver Kahn, has repeatedly said „It isn‘t our problem“ that they have more money than everyone else, and he is of course correct. He was also complaining recently that „only teams owned by Billionaires“ can compete in European football, and whilst he is probably correct there, if you look at Bayern‘s income compared to other European royalty, they don‘t do too badly, in comparison.

They have ruthlessly exploited, commercially, their income, as well as taking advantage of getting themselves a new stadium (the impressive Allianz Arena, built for the World Cup) much in the manner that both Manchester City and West Ham United have done in the Premier League.

Bayern is Germany‘s wealthiest state, and has the presence of many large conglomerates, including long-term FC Bayern partners Deutsche Telekom and Audi (among several others). They are also not that bothered about taking money from perhaps dubious sources, hence their sleeve-sponsorship from Qatar Airways, which has annoyed many of their own membership.

The „let‘s have a playoff“ discussion has been rumbling for some time, but the issue would still be you would have FC Bayern, with their squad packed with expensive, world-class internationals, against the teams that finished 2nd/3rd/4th.

I visited the Camp Nou on a non game day, truly impressive - but one of my abiding memories was seeing two guys shooting up heroin in a car as we walked up, the tour took a few hours and they were still there passed out in the car and on the pavement as we left...
