FC Barcelona are essentially mortgaging massive chunks of their potential future revenue for the next twenty-five years, for the possible chance of being competitive in the next couple of seasons.

It is absolutely mental.

But then, it is a scenario of their own making, having heaped financial problem on top of financial problem and then over-selling themselves and offering frankly ludicrous contracts to players, to get them to sign.

Did they need to pay so much though?

"I want 500k a week..."

"Look, do you want to play with Messi every week or not?"

"Yes sir.."

the significant bit here is they have mortgaged it to themselves.

borrowing money to become a financial lender - outside of FFP, just a commercial activity
borrowing money to pay for football operations - inside of FFP

selling you future right -commercial activity.

it's a wash trade that is full of danger

Absolutely they did not.

They handed out ridiculous contracts to tempt players to signing for them, instead of competitors. But the sums did not add up. At all. Because they ended up somewhere in excess of €1Bn in debt.

The previous Board of FCB ran an insane strategy of player acquisitions at enormous salaries, and they got those sums horribly wrong, which effectively meant they lost Messi because they could no longer afford to pay him even a „peppercorn“ salary due to cap limits, in the same way that - at the moment - they cannot officially register their newest player intake (such as Robert Lewandowski) because the maths doesn‘t work and it again violates the La Liga version of FFP.

This is why they are trying (rather desperately) to get rid of players like Frenkie de Jong, who Is on an enormous contract, and is also owed €17m in previously-deferred wages, and doesn‘t want to leave without being paid-up (which is of course entirely understandable, as he signed a contract with Barcelona in good faith).

FCB are also passing round the proverbial hat with their existing registered players as to which would be willing to take (either) a pay cut or (yet another) deferral of wages for some currently unspecified period.

Just came on here after seeing Barca have apparently agreed a fee for Bernardo Silva now. Glad to see they're already getting a dressing down. f*** what that club has become, loved watching them growing up, they're a shadow of what they were then. I also see they're now threatening De Jong with legal action because they have evidence that the contract he signed under the last president contained "criminal elements", I hope he takes them to the cleaners.

The way they're treating Brathwaite is ridiculous, trying to force him to leave and abandon his contract so they don't have to pay him and then acting insulted by his refusal

Not to mention the only reason they managed to sign him to begin with was by La Liga bending their own rules and allowing Barca to sign him from Leganés outside of the transfer window for an 'emergency exception'. Leganés then applied for the same 'emergency exception' to replace him and were denied. The same season they got relegated and haven't made it back up yet

Johan Cruijff would be turning in his grave, to see what a bunch of shysters have done to the club he made so famous.

Little footnote to the Silva rumours, the reported fee is £46m i.e. just £4m more than Wolves have refused for MGW. I like MGW but he's not even in the same solar system when compared to Silva.

Re: Barca. No sympathies for anyone involved; it's what the 'members' voted for.

I'm similar. I had a Barca kit when I was about 7 on holiday and loved them since. Very much a second team for me and I've been to see them a couple of times over the years as well as spending time in the city which is amazing.

One of the most attractive elements of the club for me is their historical stance against wrong doing. The club represents a region that over history has been treated with disdain by the main powers in Madrid which is why their rivalry with Real goes beyond football. You just have to look at Franco's treatment of them and the more recent putting down of independence rallies to see it.

Even on the pitch Barcelona seemed more pure than Real Madrid to me, particularly in the last 20 years or so with a real focus on youth from La Masia and playing 'the Barcelona way'. It's peak was obviously with Pep when they had 3/4 of the team made up of academy products Valdes, Pique, Puyol, Messi, Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi, Pedro with loads on the bench. Its hard to see another side becoming so successful with their own developed players again.

What's going on now though leaves a sour taste. It smacks of desperation and a panic that they can no longer compete at the top table of football finances anymore. On a wider note I do have a concern about just how popular the Premier League is getting, European domestic football seems to just be a non-event now in comparison and I can just see the future where each European competition is dominated by English clubs, even more than they are now.

They should be put under embargo until they can sort their debts out

They are literally the equivalent of a gambler that is using pay-day loans in a casino.

I can't believe the Barca fans are just accepting it, although for me it shows the ludicrousness of an elected president system that runs a football club. It is utterly brain dead.

A dodgy penalty later and the Italian football gods have righted the injustice.

Also, a chap called soppy gets booked.

Nothing much to report on the Inter game other than they were shit but a last minute goal got us the win. It was a bit tasty in the first half with some challenges flying about.

45 years ago today, on August 17th 1977, Dieter Müller of 1. FC Köln scored six goals in a Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen, with Die Geißböcke running out 7-2 winners.

This record still stands today, remarkably:

Well, in Friday‘s Top Spiel from the 2. Bundesliga, it is not going at all well for Hamburger SV, with the former European Champions, facing yet another season in the second-tier, finding themselves 0-2 down at home to SV Darmstadt after ten minutes of play.

A long road back for Der Dinos in this match!

Oof. Hamburg booed-off at half time by their own fans, at home, 0-2 down.

Just noticed that Saidy Janko started for Bochum against Bayern with Osei-Tuti on the bench.

Bayern 4 up at half time, away from home. Yawn. Again.

Christophe Galtier’s PSG have just scored one of the quickest goals going against Lille; the official time for Mbappe’s lob is 8 seconds but I reckon it was more like 6-7 seconds personally (haven’t timed it mind). I’m mildly raging, but it was also very impressive to watch, and Lille have been by far the better team since the goal so there’s hope.

Just the four goals for PSG at HT. Lille haven’t actually looked too bad going forwards and have had a good portion of possession, but PSG have been frightening going forwards and could have had 8 - like a hot knife through butter! Galtier could genuinely get them firing in Europe this year.

PSG look much more dangerous than they ever did under Pochettino, and I really like Poch as a manager.

Gaultier could be their perfect fit. Only time will tell, but it's a great start for him.

Bennacer equalises with a scorcher and he’s probably been Milan’s best player.

Coincidently he’s currently negotiating a contract renewal
