Moussa Niakhaté

The literal last thing we needed was one of our lads missing the crucial penalty in a shootout to torpedo his country at the AFCON and having to carry around that mental baggage. Especially a defender.

That happening to Niakhaté is about the most Forest thing that could ever happen at a mid season international tournament.

I'm sure he'll be warmly welcomed back to the NDA by the Forest squad and staff. His presence is very much needed here now so he won't have much time to dwell on things.

I'm not doubting they are patriotic and wanted to win for their country but these are strong warriors many have been through a lot worse than a penalty shootout failure.
You dust yourself off and go again.

Indeed. He comes across as a strong character.

The immediate sadness and disappointment of letting your country down (which he didn't - but that's probably how he feels) will be forgotten in a few days once he gets back into the daily routine of club football and work life. With all his teammates joking around and lifting him up.

Of course. Eventually.

I don't doubt Moussa will move on but we need him to play next Saturday. After a summer tournament you go away, have a break, clear your head and move on. We need him ready to play on Saturday in a massive game at Bournemouth. Seeing the state of him at full time you'd imagine he won't be walking into the NDA tomorrow night with a smile and without a care in the world.

Of all the things that could have happened Moussa coming back having missed the crucial penalty in a shootout to knock his country, the holders, out of the tournament is pretty much the worst case scenario for him. And for us. A limp group stage departure, or losing the shootout but after sticking his penalty away would have been much more preferable. To assume he won't be bothered by the weekend because he's been through worse is a bit naive I'd wager.

Or it might just galvanise his determination.
I remember the 90/91 season when Pearce scored 16 goals from full back (& I don’t think any were penalties either) following having a penalty saved in the World Cup semi final.

Yes, I remember feeling disappointed/outraged/incensed when Gordon Strachan had a couple of good months mid-season (ie just before the voting) and won the FWA Footballer of the Year instead of Pearce, who was outstanding all season. OK, so there may be a hint of Forest bias about that and Strachan was undoubtedly a great pro, but I still feel Pearce should have won it.
