The fairest system for offside now that we're using technology is to only base it solely on foot position. If a player is leaning forward it shouldn't matter as long as their feet are inline with the last defenders feet. It would eliminate the inaccurate vertical line that they draw from someones arse or sleeve. In every other part of football the line is the deciding factor it doesn't matter if the player is overhanging with any part off his body for example a penalty kick encroachment, free kicks walls and even the ball as per Japan in the World Cup.

This but torso not feet

But that would mean having to draw the made up vertical lines. Going by the feet it creates a line like all other markings on a football pitch and would treat them the same. Think of it how a 100 meter runners line up.

Actually, there shouldn't be a problem because, unlike a penalty, for instance, offside is an absolute decision in that it is either offside or it isn't, unlike a foul in the penalty area which is interpretation of the Law.

How they can muck it up is the problem. In theory it's easy, in practice, it isn't because they simply don't have the kit to sort it out.

I've always argued that the lino, in many instances, just can't see the kicker and the 'offside' player at the same time therefore he has no possibility of rendering the correct decision, unless he has eyes in the back of his head. And we do wonder if some even have eyes in the front.

As someone mentioned above, the ice hockey rule has interested me in that it is fixed, like the goal line, therefore you can position a camera in just the right position, giving a much more accurate idea of the situation.

Otherwise, forget the present crackpot ruling, go back to the simple Laws of the Game and rely on the Mk 1 eyeball, and accept the failings.

I have just read that a Brighton goal against Palace was incorrectly ruled no goal for offside, because the VAR bloke drew the line in the wrong place! Let that sink in for a minute.

Sounds like another dire day for VAR. Brentford equaliser offside but lines not drawn, Brighton goal disallowed after line drawn on wrong defender and Chelsea handball...
What a shock - the Brentford one was Lee Mason. As soon as I saw there was a cock up I knew it would be him.

Retired ref that only does VAR work now.

The same guy that did the Wolves hand ball & the ridiclous Brentford penalty against us. Why oh why he is still employed to make decisions at a Premier League level I have zero idea. Jobs for the boys.

Leicesters 4th goal that was disallowed, was also wrong they ignored the last defender and the Line wasn’t even parallel with the penalty box. Coupled with the ignored save by the West Ham defender. It’s been an utter farce.

First time I ever agreed with Danny Murphy.

He said on MOTD that he rather be talking about skills, tactics and so on. Instead, we're talking about VAR making a mess of it.

TBF the line shouldn't be parallel with the penalty area, due to perspective.

You can clearly see this by looking at the line of the cut grass.

They shouldn't draw lines at all because it's not the correct decision even if it looks it on camera.

If they have to draw a line it should go to the linesmans decision until automated systems are in place. Does anybody actually want to see this mm decisions nonsense, even if it works in your favour.

Just go back to having the ref and linesman making decisions. If VAR can be used incorrectly there's no point having it. Use goal line technology and bin the rest off. Nothing that's not been said a million times by others but i hate not being able to celebrate straight away it takes away the feeling you get from what should be the best part of the game, when your team scores.
f*** Var and accept the mistakes the human officials will make from time to time. At least it's done with in a few seconds that way. Sitting round for five minutes seeing if someone's toe is a fraction ahead of someone's kneecap is embarrassing.

Two Fulham players offside as the free kick is swung into the box yesterday for their goal.

Have to be interfering with play as the centre backs are aligned to them.

Didn’t even seem to get a VAR check.

Thought that myself at the time but assumed someone must have been playing them on as no VAR check

Unfortunately, that's millions.

VAR is quite clearly the emperor’s new clothes.

It sucks the joy out of every goal and generally ruins the flow of a game as everyone stands around clueless while some fuckwits flap around as they try to remember what they said and got wrong the week before.

VAR is getting such bad press from all media outlets at the moment, it's unthinkable that they won't try something new, probably for next season now.

Of course, given the PGMOL track record, it's also probably going to be another cock up.
