Tbf if we bring in a number 9 then it makes sense to loan Sam out. At 24 a season at somewhere like Boro could be just what he needs to round him off to a forward capable of playing in the Prem as the main striker.

I'm more than happy for him to develop here with us if we don't bring someone in, but we all know what EM is like. After last night he'll want us to step up far quicker.

Again, reality is he's 5th choice forward. Four strikers (whether you think they're strikers or not is sort of irrelevant, as they're all playing up front as part of a front two system) got on the pitch yesterday. Sam wasn't one of those 4.

Chances of minutes are going to be extremely limited. He might get a 20 minute cameo every now and again but that's going to be his lot.

Choice to be made whether his development is better suited here, under our coaching, even if minutes are sparse, or whether a loan with regular football would be better. Potential for a sale too although I think that's less likely as if we do go down then we'll lose BJ/MGW and Dennis and he will suddenly be first choice again.

From Sam's Dad. Possibly off then?

Well, I did write "on the evidence of the six games played so far", and that includes Grimsby. In the Prem, Sam has barely played, but I recall him missing one clear headed opportunity. Taiwo, I believe, has played in every game so far, league and cup, and scored and contributed to one goal - the one that bounced off him - while also missing several other opportunities to score. I'll add that I'm not criticizing Taiwo, just pointing out in response to your reply that using the only comparative metrics available then my original assertion stands: Sam is our best finisher. And in order to win matches then surely finishing is the most important variable?
I take your point but in all statistical studies you have to wait until there is another data to make a comparison and an informed judgement and both data sets need to be like for like. In this case, personally, I'd say there's isn't enough to draw any conclusions..... lets hope for all our sakes that there will be soon.

I'd be playing Surridge as our number 9 with Gibbs White and Johnson support.
I like Surridge a lot, but wouldn't go as far as you. He's not ready to lead the line in the premier League yet, and to be honest, may never be. He wasn't really ever first choice in the Championship either, only when others were injured. But the boy can certainly finish.

If we tweak our formation to have a lead striker instead of a forward 3 I can see SS challenging TA or at least getting decent game time.

Still our best, most composed player in the box. Might not get many minutes but should be a fixture on the bench IMO, especially with 9 subs.

I fancy he'd have buried Awoniyi's late chance v Bournemouth.

No idea if he's composed in the Premier League. It's a completely different level. Nowhere near as much time and space as against Huddersfield, WBA, Hull et al

The rest of his game might be lacking but I think composure is a scalable skill. Obviously there's less time/space but you still get opportunities & I think there's a space for someone like him on a 9 man bench.

The one with his back to goal? Not seen it back but looked a half chance at the time to me?

Anyhow, I think BJ is fast becoming 'our best, most composed player in the box', if he isn't already, with the bonus that he can beat a man and stretch with his pace.

Nothing against Surridge, but I don't think he is the answer as others seem to as think we need more than he offers overall. He's a good finisher though.

I don't disagree, but at the moment it is BJ playing the balls into the box - he can't be in two places at once.

Surridge has got a lot better since he’s been out of the team apparently. Second choice striker last year before we spent 40m quid on strikers this summer….

Does anyone genuinely think he is good enough to be a first choice PL striker this season? And we stay up?

One start in the league this season. At Newcastle where we didn't get a sniff and didn't create anything.

I think he deserves another chance.
