Fans love signings no matter who they are. See the Karanka January for reference.

It's only a bit of perspective to the notion we should sign any old player as he'll do and "we can't lose". We can and in fact we often do when it comes to these left field transfers, only Samba has been a home run under our previous modus operandi. Hopefully this is Dane's scouting and not a left over from the scattergun that Dane's boss is pushing.

The Mancienne and Tesche reference if not obvious enough was because they played a lot of games in Germany and were highly rated.

In fact here's your quote on Mancienne...

He was garbage.
You’re being a bit selective there.

Mancienne was highly rated at Chelsea and indeed Wolves, and I saw him play at Hamburg and he certainty looked like he could do a job.

It just seemed the physicality of the English lower leagues did for him; playing in leagues where skill is more highly prized, he did not look out of place.

Raymondo Ponte'

It's all about mid-table...
Like Garibaldi states, new signings are greeted with absolute blind love, especially younger generations, and I suppose that's to be expected.

But once the hyped up loved up player,, whom many fans have only had hearsay on or youtube videos, starts to perform, fantasy often turns to reality.

I’d also say that Tesche wasn’t shit. He was a solid enough player but just one paced and again unsuited to the league he came into. Same story with Carvalho and indeed many others.
For me the moral of the story is think very carefully if you are a non English player whose never played here before you one into the championship. If it doesn’t work it’s likely to f*** your career-the high water mark for all these lads was before they came to us not after…

Robert Tesche has been an important squad player for VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga for the past three and a half seasons.

Whilst not a regular starter, he’s made over 100 appearances for Die Unabsteigbaren, scoring twelve times and often being used as a defensive closer to see-out matches. They absolutely loved him at Bochum.

Feels like you are arguing for the sake of it. I don't think anybody said he will guarentee being good. That goes for every single signing. Players that a pure quality somewhere end up being crap elsewhere and vice versa.

And Mancienne was a decent signing for Championship level, I stand by that. He turned out crap but that's football.

If you are expecting every signing to work you are living in cloud cukoo land. You have to look at the basics of a transfer, the good and the bad and judge it that way. This guy has plenty of good.

It's a f***ing miserable outlook if you are waiting for every transfer to fail. I dunno what you want us to do personally.

A straw man argument with no facts toward the debate.

Enjoy the sunshine.

Get excited about signings if you want (that's my chosen way to think about these things), be pessimistic if you want, who cares?

I think we all need to remember the sage words of Rino Gattuso when we talk about most things football, especially transfers considering none of us know whether a player will be good or bad for us until they've played for us:

We can all learn from Gattuso, a man unafraid to tell it how it is.

(Just saying this for a bit of fun, not to have a go or take the mickey)

It was always a bit hit and miss I guess, in the old days when there were just one or two clips on Central News for new foreign signings too (I don't remember re: Osvold and wouldn't remember re: Ponte but I remember Orlygsson clips on there anyway).

Even if they don't tie down a first team place or stay very long, they might still do enough to inspire a fan to use them for a username on a forum, with the help of the odd good game and quality assist!
Cases in point - Forest vs Leicester 1980/81 and Forest vs Tottenham 1986/87 (I was genuinely at the latter, but not sure whether you'd have been at the former or not mate)

They still might not remember how to spell the name properly though (I just changed mine from Osvald today lol: maybe you deliberately wrote Raymondo rather than Raimondo cos your name is Ray though or something anyway, I'm not sure!).

Ponte regrets leaving though I notice anyway!

I know what you mean though, but fans will always get enthusiastic and excited about new signings, and that's the best way I think, within reason (if it helps the positivity around the club and helps him feel welcomed, without putting too much pressure on the lad or going overboard with the hype). It's true the Youtube compilations tend show the best moments, although they can give an idea about in Niakhate's case for example, his calmness in possession, ability to react and make tackles/blocks, speed etc (and there is a video of him playing vs Bayern Munich too).

Talking about Youtube videos, maybe we should show this one to Henderson if he's going to be the new Shilton (what was I saying about not over-hyping lol?) - some decent saves to say the least, but also pretty good distribution at 0:50 (unless it was just a standard boot downfield and Woodcock did the rest before giving it to Birtles lol - I'm not really sure if Shilton aimed to pick him out!)

There's always something more exciting about someone we've heard little or nothing of coming from abroad. I know the difference was far greater years ago, and the novelty factor even more so, but it still stands now, for some of us anyway.

Would be an exceptional signing make no mistake. Only 26 and hasn't even reached his prime yet. We need some help in this area also.

Forest have lost a decent centre back in Tobias Figueierdo, I reckon Niakhate would be an upgrade on him.

Like what I’ve seen of the lad anyway.

If we do sign him, would he be a starter or an option off the bench? From what I've seen he's really good with the ball at his feet.

For me, he starts on the left of a back three with Worrall right side and McKenna in the middle.
