If you believe the reports, it's us that cooled on this deal, isn't it? I didn't read anywhere that Wallace rejected us.

Yes, I think the reports are that we couldn't accept Millwall's valuation of him. They were wanting silly money.

When my point is that players can be happy with taking a contract at multiple clubs and that Forest is just his favourite offer right now.

Favourite right now doens't mean he'll take it if it's not the right deal.

Put it this way, if you were earning £30k and we're offered a £50k job tomorrow, would you take it if you knew that £50k job offer would still be on the table in a few months time but you also might have other offers, which could pay more?

You'd only take if you really wanted to work for the company that was chasing you tomorrow, otherwise it's in your interest to keep your options open.

The chances of a new club coming in for Wallace that is significant better than Forest and is unexpected interest is tiny. Clubs will be preparing their summer bosmans now and will have talked to Wallace about it already.

Anyway, seems a moot point now anyway if we keep Johnson. We'll either go for him in summer or we won't now.

With Johnson looking like he is sticking around, I am less worried about signing him in this window.

What concerns me more now is a Playoff rival may snap him up and significantly strengthen their own side.

He doesn't know the offer will be there in 6 months. He might break a leg, we might sign Johnson to a new deal and not be interested, we might go up and decide we want a better player.

Yes and even more likely is his agent is saying to him there will be no shortage of interest in him on a free in the summer. I suspect even a lower level
Prem club-he’s 27, made nearly 200 appearances in the championship and has just about the best stats for a player of his kind so in reality barring a freak injury there’s next to no risk and he’ll be on every “moneyball” list out there.

I just think he’ll be priced out of our reach under those circumstances so if we really want him pay the fee (assuming it’s reasonable ie 2M)

Excellent points all... also worth considering that it's possible, once you're out of contract, to up your wage demands as the new club isn't paying a transfer fee, doesn't have to consider things like sell on clauses etc so they and they agents can argue Jed would cost you 8 if he was in contract so you make his signing on fee and wages up to 6 million and you're still net 2 million better off. Doesn't work if there's no competition of course but that could be the gamble he and his agent are thinking is worth taking.

Of course its the case. As soon as a fee is out of the picture its money in the players (and the agents) pocket.
TBF in the case of Jed Wallace, at the age of 27 this is his big contract-a 4 year deal takes him to 31 and its usually downhill from there. I would think hes not earn that well at Millwall, relative to other players in the championship of his quality so I can't honestly blame him for running his contract out and squeezing every last penny out of the next one.

My guess is he'll end up at somewhere like Leeds or Norwich in the summer...

I don't know how old you are (probably considerably younger than me), but anyway, welcome to modern football.

Wondering whether we should try to buy Wallace and loan him back to Millwall for the remainder of the season (as long as we do indeed keep hold of Johnson when the window closes).

Why would the player entertain it?

Not sure the point of your comment Otis.
Mine was in response to several people saying it’s not worth us paying money for him now when we can have him for free in the summer. I’m saying he’ll have a lot more options in the summer including bigger, richer clubs who will pay him more.

Oh and I’m 12…

Money, the same way every player entertains it if this happens. What I'm saying is that we 'gamble' on fetching a hefty price for Johnson in the summer by offering a contract to Wallace now that we'd be offering in the summer (only with signing-on fee incoroprated into weekly salary), and keep his club happy by giving them a token amount whilst they still have him for the rest of the season.

Do we really wanna be splashing loads of money on wages though. I thought we moved on from that.

Wallace would be nice but if the price isn't right I would rather us go for someone like Bowler.

Even with his record there is still no guarentees.

I think I want Bowler over Wallace if it came down to just getting one of them. Feels like we’d get 3-4 top seasons out of Bowler and make a load of money on him afterwards.

I don't know much about Bowler but we definitely need to be replacing Johnson in the summer (assuming we hang on to him tomorrow).

Might need both if Johnson does eventually go and if we don't retain Zinkernagel.

It sounds like one of those crazy deals that Spanish clubs used to do for South American players which eventually turned out to be illegal.

How about we go old school and just buy the lad for 2.5M and take that hit on the nose on the basis that we have f all chance of getting him in the next window and if we do we will have to pay that 2.5M in additional wages anyway.

This lad is the real deal and on a 4 year contract he solves our wide player issue on the left...

I'd take both. Unlikely Johnson or Zink will be here next season. We need to blood new players, who actually belong to us, now. Otherwise we are starting next season with more than half a new team. Garner and Spence will also be elsewhere. I'm guessing we can sign Lowe if we wanted.

I think it’s worth overpaying somewhat to get Wallace in, yesterday proved how much we need him or a similar player.
