It is his engine I love about him. Him & Yates did the job of 3 players last year. They both covered defensively and were constantly in the box for our attacks.

Those two were almost a throwback last season, I hadn't seen Forest play with proper box to box players for donkeys years.

Garner has all the natural attributes to be a top player, he has bags of experience already for his age. If a deal is there to be done we would be mad to not take it in my opinion.

I think anything between £10-15m inc addons is a good deal. For me Garner is a future England international, people forget how young he is still.

He was often overlooked last season because of others but he really was very very good.
It's mad to think Garner is younger than a lot of our U23 players that are barely around the first-team picture - He's younger than Panzo, Harbottle, Swan and Fornah and only a month older than Konate.

He's got the potential to be an outstanding player. If we have any chance of signing him we should absolutely go for it.

I can't see us getting him for anything less than £20m plus addons if he becomes available.

How much is Garner worth and how much would Forest be willing to pay for him? Also bearing in mind we know what we're getting with him unlike normal transfer targets.

He has 2 years left on his contract with year option.

We're going to pay LFC in the order of £15m for Williams - who has made 27 senior appearanes, and while he's a well-rated international he's not expected to reach the levels Garner probably will.

Garner has made 80+ senior appearances. Is likely to feature in future England squads. I'd expect him to be a bit more expensive.

But who knows?

I would pay up to 20m for him to be honest.

If we sign Garner we'd need one more starter next to him as a starting midfield of Garner and Yates is not keeping you in the EPL.

Not sure I buy the future England commentary. He's good, will establish himself as a PL player if continues to work hard, but that might be his ceiling. Wouldn't want us to pay more than £15m, think that's fair.

I'm always fascinated to see fans on here telling the club officials in charge of transfers what price to pay for a player.

It's fine to speculate what price you think the player is worth, but to tell the club what price they should not pay is quite amusing. Don't you think they might have a figure in mind?

Completely agree.

Add to that we are talking here about 20 for him and 25 for MGW. Thats an outlay of nearly 50M on 2 kids who have no prem experience between them.
I know they are good players and theres a substantial chance of them going up in value but its a hell of a lot...and it doesn't leave much left for the other midfielder we need as well as others. I think we are sticking our necks out a bit far financially....

What's the difference?

I think he's worth up to £15m including accounting for potential, therefore I hope the club doesn't pay more than £15m.

What with our progress to date, you wonder if he might be thinking a perm transfer to us would now be a good move over what's going on at Man Utd currently...

What do you mean?.
The turmoil at Manure is always amplified by their size and status. Even though I dislike them intensely, objectively they have brought in a top coach with a clear playing philosophy and whilst there are undoubtedly bell-ends at the club if I were a betting man I'd have a few quid on them doing very well in the next 3 years once hes done the requisite pruning and refitting.
I suspect Jimmys plans will simply reflect the level he and his agent think he can reach rather than anything else. I'm not sure hes good enough for Manure but I'm less sure of that after last season...

You're right of course. I was hoping that we are starting to look like a side that means business and that might make him think about whether getting established here in the top tier would be preferential to battling to play a few games their.

I have no doubt that man utd will improve and that they now have a quality coach. It's his call whether he thinks he has a realistic chance of making their first team regularly (without knowing who they are signing). I suppose another loan to someone else is an option, but I would hope he'd be looking at us for a perm switch in that scenario.

Good luck to him whatever happens.

I've been on this forum for 2 years now, wanting to comment on James Garner from a Man Utd fan's perspective; my first username wasn't approved for the entirety of last season, but I finally got permission to post a week ago, so here I go!

I think Garner has all the ability to turn out a top player; he seems to be very calm on the ball and is improving his physicality with every passing season. I watched 15-20 Forest games last year (they were a blast to follow as my Championship team) and it seems like he is becoming press proof, which is very important in todays game, he receives and turns with the ball very well in tight spaces and makes good decisions under pressure. Playing under a manager like ten Hag should enhance his game even further, since he seems to be very detailed orientated and Garner excelled under Cooper, who gives of the same type of vibe in terms of coaching style.

Garner might not be ready right now for Man Utd, but I have no doubt he's better than Scott McTominay already, and offers more in the passing game than Fred does, so I (along with a lot of other fans) would love to have him in/around the squad this year getting minutes that would go to those two. We all know that won't happen...Fred was very expensive (decent player IMO but not Man Utd quality) and McTominay has a huge fan base within the club (no idea what anyone sees in him, Yates is as good if not better) so they are probably going to get minutes ahead of him. If De Jong arrives, that's one less place to compete for; the ideal move for me would be another loan for Garner to an EPL club, but unfortunately I don't think that can happen with Forest now since you guys loaned Henderson from us already. If Jimmy does go someone else permanently, it will be a shame but I understand why he wouldn't want to wait around much longer for a chance he's seemingly earned already.

I realize now that some of those thought above are a bit fragmented, but I'm at work right now and I've got some other stuff going on so I'm not at my best in terms of forum posting (gotta get some pre-season reps in)! Good luck with the upcoming season, I look forward to watching Forest taking on the Prem, just hopefully not getting results vs Man Utd!

Is Garner with the squad on their tour? I see he's not starting or on the bench for today's friendly.

As said above, the word on the street is he has a knock, and he's been training away from the squad with Maguire, Tuanzebe etc. until fully fit. I was disappointed we didn't get to see him today; United played well but its obvious McTominay doesn't have the confidence to take the ball off the back 4 and turn to play a forward pass, which is one of Garner's strengths IMO.
