Given Monsieur Lamouchi's comments on Tyler Walker, I think this is a no go, just something to distract from other things we're looking at.
Lamouchi understands there's just 17 left and he wants players who can come in and have an immediate effect. Not wait on someone to get better and assimilate.
That said if Gayle does come, unlikely as it sounds, it might not be that bad an option for late March/April, if we're still in handy position and need to finish strong.
Hate to say it, but injuries and suspensions have always been a nuisance for us.

According to bbc teletext, the Mail says that we are trying to get Gayle on loan with a fee of £15 million if we go up. Seems a lot of money to me, more so when we know he is carrying an injury anyway.
We do need someone who can help chase a game, but I don’t think this bloke is the answer.
