Dwight Gayle

His last foray into Championship football yielded 24 goals, the one prior to that just the 23. Over 60 odd games that looks decent.

What am I missing.
He hasn't played football for regularly 18 months, is on about 60k per week.

He's an excellent striker at this level. Just feels incredibly unlikely to happen IMO.

He likes to proclaim visiting the day after next Monday.

Not ideal but needs must
As Mr Blonde says it's not ideal but if Grabban is crocked for a while we seriously need some fire power and let's face it he is a seriously good striker at this level.

There's no needs must if it bankrupts the club. FFP is still a thing.

I get the impression Dane is far too sensible to sanction any deal that could potentially see us breaching FFP, much less bankrupting the club.

I was talking in terms age and how much of a fit he'd be for our side.

Looks like this one was just hot air.
I’d imagine his wages are catastrophic. He seems to be turning into another player whose happy to have a pseudo career rather than risk it and actually get out and play football-what a waste

He's an easy go-to for any journalist to link with a club that needs a new striker. Realistically, the only side who would fork out his wages would be a parachute-payment club desperate for goals.

Exactly. Just look at another player of similar talent /age / success who has been prepared to move clubs and drop down from PL to maintain regular playing time, score regular goals, valued by his fanbase and respected as one of the best by his compatriots.
I guess players make their own choices but chasing the silver dollar rather than the silverware is not everyone's choice.
I give you one Lewis Grabban.

Just to play devils advocate, isn't this a similar situation to Colback who was on enormous wages and not playing, ironically enough at Newcastle?

Nobody would doubt Colback's commitment to play these days.

Yes I no agree, although my suspicion is that Gayle’s wages are a different level of “enormous”.

Personally I think it’s a bit sad-if I were a footballer I’d want to play over everything else-sitting on your ass watching others do it would be too much for me!

True. It's not like the difference between PL salaries and Championship salaries are so vast. Top Championship players will never have to do a proper job once they retire from football if they're not idiots with money. Why not settle for being 'very rich' instead of 'super rich' if it gives you far more pleasure playing the game you must have loved to get into in the first place. Careers are so short it seems like you're wasting your time for a quick buck.

In fairness to Dwight Gayle, going from £40k+ per week to less than half if that is a huge drop. Its easy to say that he'd still be earning a handsome wage getting less than half of that at Forest or another Championship club, but I doubt most of us on here would ever agree to a more than 50% pay cut regardless of how rich we are.

If I had 20M in the bank and was going to be earring 3M a year I probably would. His career will be over in 2 years and he'll never get that back regardless of the money...

Obviously hes an irrelevance now given the window has closed but I wonder if this may be "it" for Dwight Gayle's career. I think he has 2 years to go on his Geordie career and you'd have to have a bet he isn't going to play any/much first team football in those 2 years...I know hes an ugly, horrible git but it is a waste.

You get the feeling that despite all the huffing and puffing coming from other parts, he wasn't even on our shopping list in January.

It doesn't fit in with our new recruitment ethos, so I think the reports were just lazy journalism.

Only thing to say is I suspect Lewis hasn't done badly here from a financial perspective. So yes hes been great for us but I don't think hes been cutting off his own arm to play for us....

How long since he played? You'd think Newcastle would let him go somewhere on loan for free just to get him some minutes.
