Sad news from Spain, where David Silva has had to retire - at the age of 37! - following a cruciate ligament injury sustained in training with Real Sociedad.

A player I absolutely loved watching, he was a mercurial wizard.

Here in Germany, the 2. Bundesliga is back this weekend, and the fixture computer serves up an absolute cracker for the Friday night match to kick off the season, as Schalke 04 travel to Hamburger SV, kickoff is 2030CET/1930UK.

Schalke will hope to bounce-back straight away after being relegated last season (after a single season in the top-flight following a yo-yo relegation-promotion couple of seasons) whilst Der Dinos will go into the season - yet again - hoping for promotion, after four seasons mired in the second tier.

I have a fridge full of Bier, some pizza and bags of potato chips, and I refuse to move off the coach because Fußball ist Zurück!

Well, it has finished, and what an advert for German football and the 2. Bundesliga!

Hamburger SV 5, Schalke 3, in a game that had pretty much everything - apart from eight goals, a penalty, a sending-off, incident, controversy, goals, and, well, you get the drift.

German football, eh? Bloody hell!

It was a cracking game. End to end and loads of drama.
I then flipped over to the Belgian League and had the distinct pleasure of watching the last few minutes of Union St Gilloise 2-0 Cheating Bastards FC (Anderlecht).

A certain someone is calling it a day.

First time I saw him live was Italy vs Croatia at the San Siro ( quite the match). Whilst every other player left the pitch to avoid being hit by Croatian flares Gigi stood at the edge of his area. Almost daring them to hit him.

Italy and Croatia have managed a few decent matches over the years - I remember the 2-1 at the 2002 world cup (pre-mobiles, and was watching it on one of those battery powered tellies you could get in the supermarket because all the matches were early - I think the Brazil vs England match was on the day of my last A-level exam and the school allowed people to come in early and watch it before school - with a charity donation - on the big screen, all the little year 7s were getting a bit too excited at it...)

Then again, there have been plenty of crackers with Spain like the 5-3 in the Euros a while back, really thought we'd manage to win that lol, especially with that Unai Simon keeping error to give us the lead.

Staggering to see Buffon has only just finished though. He played for Parma from 95-01 first time and that is before the lifetime of some younger pros. It's like how long Novak Djokovic has been going on in tennis, he started making a breakthrough on tour in about 2005, similar time to Murray, and not long behind Nadal. Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz (not the saints one) were only born in 2003.

We need more characters like him. You might not like them, but they are irresistible, you just can't ignore them.

Jesus can these pundits get any further up Pep’s hoop?

Wonder who’ll pipe him first Rio or Joleon,

He‘s a canny hand but I reckon Ron Manager would have success with the Barca team he had dropped in his lap, he made a balls of it in Deutschland and he’s won one champions league wi City.

Brian and Peter 4 attempt, 2 wins, one semi…….end of chat.

The Bavarians already have a chant for him, Scorpions' Rock You Like A Harry Kane (Hurricane, geddit?) Which I thought was quite funny for the old windbag
That anthem was rolled out in the Super Cup - played at Bayern’s home ground, unfortunately, as it turned out - and it’s already caught on.

The Scorpions are proper rock royalty here, of course.

Such a shame KDB is going to be out for months, probably my favourite player to watch. Says a lot that City can lose a player of his caliber and still plug the gap, must be nice

Yep me too

Although City seem immune from any drop off in standards

Gundogan & Mahrez gone, you just know their replacements will be as good.

They got rid of Cancelo completely and just tweaked the system and it's like he was never gone. Nice to have an unlimited budget and the pick of any player like they have, but most of it comes down to elite coaching.

They might be able to plug a gap, they can’t however stop a cross.
