Incorrect English - to what degree should it be corrected on forums?

I don’t claim to be an expert but instances of ‘of’ instead of ‘have’ and so on.

Language is important, but the shorthand of social media seems to be hastening it’s demise. Evolution would be fine, but it’s decaying.

People want to be ‘individuals’, and social media is encouraging them to have and express opinions, but they seem increasingly lacking in the ability to accurately express their thoughts. (The deficiency in objective, logical analysis to arrive at those opinions being another matter).

My initial thought is I want mistakes in language corrected when I see it so that people know how it should be, but I don’t want to be a pedantic so and so that spoils the mood. And sure sometime it’s a rush to type on a little keyboard with auto-correct throwing in some gremlins.

So what do people want? Do they want grammatical errors corrected (within reason) or just get on with it?

Well said :tophat:

I suggest corrections be left entirely at the discretion of Otis.

As an A-Level English Language teacher I can tell you that you have just displayed at classic prescriptivist attitude and that you are harking back to a supposed ‘golden age’ of our mother tongue which I can assure you never existed. Language evolves and changes and the idea that so-called ‘Standard English’ is the only way that people should either speak or write does nothing but further subjugate the oppressed minorities who use a range of different patois and dialect forms to communicate. Language diversity is something that should be cherished and celebrated.

That said, it pisses me right off when Forest say “there are less than x tickets remaining” when they mean “fewer”.

Seriously?!

I bet you love getting that lame, pre-canned response out and sounding knowledgable.

Complete bullshit mate.

We brought in a lot of players and we have shipped out a few.
Not a lot of money has changed hands either way.
I reckon Mr Marinakis expects us to go up on the cheap.
While Leeds are rumoured to be in for a proper, proven striker for £13m, we are looking at a £1.2m 22 year old who was good at 17 but has bombed ever since.
Message to Mr Marinakis: you will not get promotion unless you invest some serious cash in some real talent.
Surely, watching the Reds play Olympiakos 3 weeks agon you could see the weakness in the Reds team - lots of effort, lots of trying to play the fast passing slick game with a high press, but no one there who can score goals for fun.
Come on Mr M, don't try and finesse promotion with 2nd rate players coming in.
Do it with style like Wolves did last season and Leeds are probably going to this.

I see that the U23 plus the Bomb Squad managed a 1-1 draw after falling behind.
Goalscorer Virgil Gomis missed a last minute penalty that would have given us the win.
Steele, Clough, Murphy and Cummings were among the starting XI

Chap I knew was emigrating to Australia in the mid 1960s.
When asked why he wanted to emigrate he said, "When I was young homosexuality was illegal; they have just legalised it; I'm off before they make it compulsory".

Leeds have allegedly offered £13m for a striker who scored 17 goals in 36 games in Serie A; previously his best season was 7 goals in 32 games back in 15/16 in Serie B.

Petagna is not a proven quality striker in the UK (or Italy really) and SPAL 2013 apparently want €25m for him. That’s the market we’re playing in right now.

Quality at the right price is going to take time, patience and nerve. We’re making the right moves and positioning ourselves well to make quality additions but it’s going to be a case of who blinks first.

Leeds would have offered more...
I understand you are absolutely right in what you say, but if I posted "everything is ticking along nicely" it wouldn't be quite so emotive, would it?

I think this only really becomes applicable after the transfer window has slammed shut. The club isn't finished in the market yet, who knows what players we'll bring in over the next couple of weeks?
