It's the same as people who use pretentious words in every day conversation, it comes across as trying to prove you're more intelligent. If someone started using all the latin words for plants and animals youd think what a dickhead.

At least thats what im assuming.
I get that. I guess it's a little bit subjective though if you're familiar with a word and someone else isn't, especially with something like 'Regista' where it names a specific role in football, is it really any different to 'Sweeper' or 'Anchor Man'? I suppose with football terms as well it depends when you grew up watching football, if someone just said "playmaker" to me I'd immediately think of a number 10 playing just behind the striker. Whereas if they said "regista" I know they mean more like Pirlo or Xabi Alonso. But if someone asked me what a "halfback" was I'd have to Google it to be sure, but I wouldn't think they were pretentious for using the term.

I can understand when someone uses a long complicated word when there's a more commonly used shorter one which would do the same job.

If there was an English word that meant “deep lying playmaker” I’m sure people would use it instead.
All the English words describe the role, so that is the word/phrase , or are we going to start looking for a word for every position with more than 1 word? Wing Forward, Attacking Midfielder, Left Back, Box to Box etc

As I said, no one says attaccante because there is already a word for it. There isn’t a word for regista.

Why dont we use zurückgelassen for left back then? (i did just google that) We dont have a word for left back?

It’s usual for people who speak one language to use another country’s words when there isn’t one in their own language.

2 syllables is hardly taxing.

And 4 is?

I prefer the English versions, they tell you exactly what the player is supposed to do and keeps it simple, i mean ffs our fans can't even spell Osborn correctly and he was only at the club 15 years!

And regista is Italian, thats been barely adopted into English football.

How about you use whatever words you like and I’ll use whatever words I like. I bet you’ve used the words Cartoon, Cigar, Loot, Safari, Bungalow, Anonymous, Chaos... etc etc

But again I haven't got a f***ing clue what a Halfback did and that's pretty descriptive, I assume they stayed halfway back from something but I don't know whether that's the halfway line, the opponents box or their own centre midfielders.

And you know what people say about people assuming things.

Though you're doing a good enough job outta that yourself without me being involved.

Ah the old 2-3-5 formation. None of this modern 4-4-2 rubbish.

Thats fair enough, but if you want people to engage in conversation it's better to use the language every one else does on such a varied forum. It's why people used to get banned for writing in slang and they had the CHAV logo/tag.

I dont care about any of it and i was just responding to the original question from HP.

 “Regista” has been around for ages now. It’s a term which describes something which takes a sentence to describe in English. Language evolves like everything else.

I like when words are made for really specific players. Like how the German's made Raumdeuter and it only describes Thomas Muller.

I feel a sense of schadenfreude at these people using foreign words when there's an English version available.
