I should imagine there should certainly be targets available who'd normally fetch a bigger fee.
But the awful way in which we've operated in the transfer market in recent years may handicap us too much to be able to take full advantage of the situation sadly.
I think we should simply buy as good as possible for as little as possible, with a view to building. Season after next will prob be when the likes of Mighten, Johnson, Yates etc. really hit their stride ala Cash.

I'd back CH any day of the week to not get fleeced like those previously responsible for signings.
Garner appears to be enjoying his football here, so hopefully there's a deal to be done.
Add to that a couple of solid pro types on short term deals or loan and that's probably about it.
They're unlikely to be additions that will have fans off their seats, but they'll hopefully be capable of doing a job.

Hughton's signings so far have been encouraging, and gives me hope that we'll have a better than average summer transfer window.

You're probably correct, but that doesn't make it right.
For once I'd like our owners not to be total fuckwits by setting realistic targets, and hoping for better. Rather than living in dreamland themselves, and expecting it.
They've had 3 years to turn us into a Prem club and failed miserably. Maybe they should recognize that it's not that simple, and extend that thought process to the manager :dunno:

Funny that a club could fail miserably over 3 years, yet a manager hasn't been given a fair crack of the whip if he was given that period of time by most supporters merits.

The only difference I have seen betweeen this season & last season has been the missing of chances whereas last season we were very clinical. One season we were desperately unlucky not to finish in the playoffs & this one we have been flirting with the drop.
There is too little between teams in this league to even have a target of finishing mid table.

Yes, most of the games are so tight.
I worked out that Hughton's record to date here 1.24 ppg would yield 57 points over season. Last season 6th place was 70 points. More usually it's 73-75. We need 13-18 extra points from 46 games.
If we can maintain the same defensive solidity and add another 10-15 goals over the course of the season we will be challenging for the top 6.

I’m sure Mighten, Yates and Johnson will be great in 12 months time, it’s a shame they’ll be sacrificed in 18 months to fund a shit transfer window.

The only thing is that a successful window is not about bringing them in, its getting out the ones you don't wan't or need as well. We haven't been much good at that aspect of transfer business over recent years and one thing is for sure we cannot Strat next season with 34 first team players. But assuming we get 1/2 a dozen out I would think its as good a time as any to throw the dice...
Our wage bill is 11th highest in the division (the squad has by the summer will have largely been trimmed to the extent that we probably need up to dozen players in the summer). So just above average. Where do we want it to get to, bearing in mind it is the factor that has the highest correlation to success in English football.
Get it to 20th and really out perform. Lamouchi did a brilliant job getting us to 7th last season. As observed our finishing was clinical whereas this season not so much so.
Hopefully, FFP is scrapped in the short term and Marinakis is inclined to spend as there will be bargains around. We are going to lose £50m this season and even if we sell all our saleable players (to achieve £10m in a depressed market, which is probably optimistic) we are still likely to bust the 3 year ffp allowable level in one season.
If that doesn't happen we probably need to adopt Warnock tactics and get in a load of physically strong players and rely on a high percentage of set piece goals. It is dispiriting I know, but we just cant compete for the gifted technical players as they cost more and our income and FFP rules mean we will be extremely lucky if we can balance the books and get promotion.. There is maybe some hope with Mighten in the long run but I think he needs a season out on loan to toughen up. Johnson could well be this seasons equivalent
of Walker and I worry for him. He often looks good in League 1 but Championship a different story -Grant and Bridcutt rated to be better than him this season on whoscored.com (he was subbed and was responsible for the oppositions goal through poor marking on Saturday) so it could well be a case of a player 'improving' because they are out of sight. I hope not but the assumption that he will return from loan and suddenly be the answer to all our attacking ills, is a hell of a burden.

Hefele-wasn't he last seen working in a garden centre in Mansfield?. Seriously he's just going to run down his contract and pocket the cash, cos no one is going to go for him-could see him reappearing in D2 but only after he's paid up by us.
Blackett-not fussed either way, haven't seen that much of him but what I have suggests he's limited but I could be wrong.
Smith-apparently really nice guy and solid enough keeper-I think Brices distribution really reflects on Smith and that's why he won't make it at Championship level IMO and he needs to play first team football now so he needs to go on a free to anyone who will take him and I'd imagine in D1/2 he'll do a very nice job for someone so he's one that will find a home I think.
Diallo-no idea, never seen him, wouldn't recognise him in a prison line up.
Taylor-Bomb squad!, absolutely shocking how's he's been handled and the very fact that he's being casually talked about as a failure is terrible. Just imagine if he were at Peterborough-he'd be on 19 or 20 goals by now and they would be hawking him around for 9M (maybe 7 with Covid). Its fine for Hughton not to want him but we really need to start to understand which players are assets financially and which aren't at this club. I despair when it comes to him. I honestly believe he could have been a very good part of a decent front three and if Grabban can get 20 in a season so could Taylor. What an awful, inexcusable waste.
Bachirou-never given a chance. Looked like there might be a player there to me but if I were him I'd have my agent revving the car up in the Forest car park to get me out of here and back to Scandinavia.

There's some noise that we are very interested in Ahmed Musa, Nigerian winger, 28. Given that he was very keen to return to England (he was scheduled for a medical for West Brom in January but Allardyce pulled the plug for financial reasons), I wonder if he's not for us but for you.

No matter what player wages actually are, they are still ridiculously high. Which leads me to comment on random topics during some of the ticka-tacka (spelling?) stuff we have to sit through whilst 'enjoying' the many thousands of TV matches these days.
Such as, why can't they kick the ball with both feet, though not at the same time, of course. Sometimes, they simply can't pass to a team mate because the angles are all wrong for their one-footed feebleness.
And why, if they are so good at ball control, why can't they pass accurately to a teammate whilst under no pressure at all, for instance during the endless passing between the back four?
Am I bored during this international break? Or is this endless lockdown taking it's toll?

I could see CH being interested in Sam Cosgrove from Birmingham or similar.
He'd tick the boxes as relatively young, relatively cheap and with scope to lead the line and progress. He's probably not the type of high profile signing many fans want to see, but I suspect he's about the highest level the club will realistically be able to afford.

The club need to forget what the fans want or think as without meaning to sound rude, the majority of our fans aren't in a position to pass comment on how Forest as a club should be ran.
Ultimately the fans judgement is given on past performance not who we sign. If we're flying high in the league then Sam Cosgrove from Birmingham is seen as an astute, carefully researched signing who knows the league. If we're doing shit then he's a desperation signing because we can't get anyone to help us in our plight.
Brentford fans won't have a f***ing clue who half the players they sign are but they do alright.
