Summer 2021 transfer window

Yep, next season Hughton will be expected to mount a promotion push. This has been the ‘building’ season.

I think they should be giving him 3 seasons come what may. 1 down...2 to go.

I only say this as i'm pretty sure that if in the unlikely event that we go down, he would be given a chance to get us out of league 1 and therefore given another crack at the Championship the season after.

We’re not going down and expect to be top half next season and in with a shout of the play offs. The deals both in and out this summer will determine how close to the play offs we get and I trust CH not only to be on it with regard to the summer dealing but also getting a tune out of them from the off after a strong pre season

With fans back next season, a more balanced squad. Think we should be in or around the play offs next season and that should give him another season. This season was about sorting out the absolute shit show the squad was in this season and keeping us up.

I could see CH being interested in Sam Cosgrove from Birmingham or similar.

He'd tick the boxes as relatively young, relatively cheap and with scope to lead the line and progress. He's probably not the type of high profile signing many fans want to see, but I suspect he's about the highest level the club will realistically be able to afford.
Thought we should have been in for him in January.

With Freeman getting game time, I can't help feel that Hughton may already be looking to extend his loan, or make his move permanent.

It would need to be a very cut price deal if so. There’s no way on Gods Earth that anyone will pay a fee for him and I’d think he’s firmly in Sheff Us bomb squad given what we’ve seen of him so they will probably be looking to pay up a chunk of his contract. If that happens and he’s prepared to take a significant wage cut you might be right....

Trouble with players like freeman and I suspect Knockers is they are often
totally deluded and think they are still worth 40k a week even though they haven’t made their parent teams squad and have done very little out on loan.
That’s why I suspect all if our loan players will go back. If you’re not dealing with player (and agent) crazyness it’s the clubs-granted it’s the Evening post but the piece on Benfica throwing out “under” 10M Euro for Krovinovic with 1 year on his contract left us absolutely hilarious. 750k Max for him in this market.

Players likely to leave this summer:

Worrall (£££)
Ribeiro
Grabban
Arter
Bachirou
Sow
Murray
Jenkinson
Dawson (coaching role hopefully)
Bong (hopefully)
Knockaert (EOL)
Krovinovic (EOL)
Garner (EOL)
Freeman (EOL)

Players left

GK Samba
GK Smith
GK Diallo
RB Christie (if he signs)
RB Gabriel
LB Blackett
LB Ioannou
CB McKenna
CB Mbe Soh
CB Figuerido
CDM Yates
CDM Cafu
CDM Colback
CAM Carvalho (we can dream)
LW Ameobi
LW Lolley
RW Mighten
RW Johnson
ST Taylor

Likely starting 11s next season:

Samba
Blackett McKenna Soh Christie
Cafu ?
Mighten ? Ameobi
?

Smith
Bong Figuerido ? Gabriel
Yates Colback
Lolley Carvalho Johnson
Taylor

Mbe Soh doesn’t count towards the squad limit I think, Mighten and Johnson definitely don’t, which leaves 9 spaces in a 25 man squad, which I assume will be 3-6 new signings. Under 21 players do not need to be registered in the squad to play.

If we have a transfer budget of £15m-£20m (for example) I would look to budget it something like this:

£4-£6m - Ball playing CDM aka Garner
£1-2m - New LCB
£2-£3m - Another winger
£4-£6m - A replacement for Grabban
£4-£5m - A top quality CAM with strong defensive attributes

Forest won’t have anywhere near £15-20m to spend sadly.

It’ll need a big sale to balance the books. Anyone coming in will be loans or low-fees, unless the club can mug someone off somehow persuade someone to over-pay for one of the young lads.

When I wrote it I knew all my hard work thinking about that post would be ignored to talk about the budget

Whatever they have to spend, I believe there should be that portion of it spent on those positions.

I foresee Worrall going for 15-20m this summer. I actually think the club are banking on it, and I’d expect much that to be reinvested in the playing squad immediately, too.

Positionally, yes, that’s where Forest need to sort.

Problem is, the squad is - still - packed with so much dross that has about as much chance of starting a match as I have, it (yet again) needs a clear-out. And, given the last accounts and the impact of coronavirus, I just can’t see the club having a pot to piss in, unless somehow they can whip up a bidding war for the likes of Worrall and maybe Mighten.

But, then, you’re significantly weakening the squad to have to build it again. Rinse and repeat.

isn't diallo only on a 1 year contract. he can go. i imagine that to generate some funds for ch as he got lots to do in the transfer window. one of our academy lads may have to be sacrificed , be it joe , brennan or mighten.

I can’t see us spending more than about 3.5m total, and only then once Worrall is flogged for 8 figures

Most players in will be loans

Worrall will go to fund a couple of permanents

That's about it

i would get Jonson Clarke-Harris from peterbrough for our striker but it's peterbrough , they'll want big money. Jonson Clarke-Harris is only 26 , at the prime of his career and has been with so many clubs, from the clips i have seen of him, reminds me a bit of les ferdinand , has physicality and pace ,and more importantly, can head and hold the line.

Probably one or two free transfers on top of that, and that will be our lot.

Outside of the Premier League and parachute payment clubs, we aren't going to see much money being spent this summer.

Good.

Every year we go f***ing nuts on transfers bussing in every player over 30 and half of Europe.

Other teams have shown that some really careful and considered transfers with a couple of youngster loans is enough to move you from mid-table plodders to challengers.

Forest have a decent spine even if Worrall left. Mbe Soh, McKenna, Cafu, Yates and Garner if re-loaned is physical and good on the ball. Just need some pace out wide and height up top and there's a mix of players that if gelled and put together in a side that is tactically astute can do well.

I agree. I'd say that we need about 4 or 5 good signings this summer, we don't need to spend a fortune but we do need to be smart. Bring back Garner, Krovinovic and Christie (or bring in decent replacements) and add a decent winger and striker to the mix (as well as integrating young players like Johnson, Gabriel, McGuane and Fornah into the squad) and I reckon we'll be a much better side next season.

The last thing we need is another bat shit mental window where we sign a whole new squad. We didn't need it last summer either, we'd have been better off just signing 5 good players rather than signing 14 players and filling the squad out with shite or players we don't need.

Good job we aren't owners, isn't it? Half think we ought not to spend anything because we'll probably sack the manager soon.

The other half think we have a decent manager and we'll never get anywhere unless we back the manager.

Pay you money and take your pick; only the guy holding the purse strings knows the thinking at the club, the finances and how ambitious they are.

Absolutely right - its all up to the big guy. Where the hell has this talk of getting rid of Hoots come from - madness but if it did come to pass then a pox on all your houses

we have to be sensible in our transfers this season , not like last summer where sabri seemed to be buying defenders by the truckload like it's a buy 1 , get 1 free sale. Any players worth poaching from our relegation rivals ? If we can't sign Krovinovic, maybe we could get matt crooks from rotherham, if we can't get back garner , how about getting back jorge grant from lincoln , if we do sell worrall , we'll probably need 1 more central defender , how about dominic iorfa from wednesday, one of the reason they are struggling is that he's out for the season, his greatest asset is his pace and like worrall , loves to dive into tackles.

I can't see anyone paying £15m out for Worrall this summer. Covid budgets will be smaller, and he's not had his best season in a Forest shirt.

I reckon we'd accept £10m, anyway.

Keep Garner, Krovinovic & Christie - add some more cutting edge upfront & out wide (maybe Knockaert - depending on the deal that can be done), I will be happy with that. We really don't need an overhaul.

Crucially the spine of the team, if we get Garner back, is settled and strong.

I'd like to see us go in for a couple of wide players and a striker at the least, ending up with a squad like:

GK: Samba, Smith, Shelvey
RB: New, Gabriel
RCB: Worrall, Mbe Soh
LCB: McKenna, Blackett
LB: Iannou, Ribeiro
CM: Garner, Cafu
CM: Yates, New
RW: Lolley, New
AM: Carvalho, Johnson
LW: Mighten, Ameobi
ST: New, New

Don't think we'll be able to actually do it, but that means moving on Jenkinson, Colback, Arter, Bong, Dawson, Bachirou, Grabban and Taylor and Figgy, which is probably nearing £200k a week of wages right there - about £10m a season.

Master Yates

John Robertson
Given likely finances, I’m thinking pick up Christie on a free and get Krovinovic for about 1.5m-2m as the minimum activity we could get away with and still hope for a top 6 challenge. Try for Garner on loan too but if not, play Colback. Bring Gabriel and Johnson into the fold, possibly Carvalho too.

Then it’s up to Hughton to keep improving Mighten and to get Lolley, Grabban and Colback firing again.

Tell Vrentzos to concentrate on getting rid of Arter, Jenkinson, Bong and Bachirou.

People like Blackett, Figueiredo, Taylor, Ameobi, Yates will have to do for now and can contribute across a successful season.

Build around the core of Samba, McKenna, Worrall, Garner/Colback, Krovinovic and Grabban. Get more out of Mighten and Lolley and that’s a decent team with some ok options on the bench.

If we have to sell Worrall, I’d move for Steven Caulker who is out of contract in Turkey. He’s sorted his issues now apparently, and he’s a very good centre-half.

Maybe pick up a young player from lower leagues if the price is right.

Most importantly though, just let Hughton do his work. I’m 100% confident that if he’s still our manager in summer 2023, we will be a Premier League club.
