Sammy Ameobi

Surprised he's stayed in the Championship to be honest.

I'd have kept him as a wildcard option on the cheap but equally I'm not that bothered he's gone either. He's certainly not one that we'll miss, partly because he didn't stand out often enough whilst he was here.

Can we remind you of that when he hits a banger from outside of the area against us for 'Boro?

The very fact he's signed for Middlesbrough shows we made a mistake letting him go

I had a feeling he'd move to a Championship club that finished above us. Can't say I'm surprised, he's no world beater but a useful player to have at this level.

Anyone would think we'd let Ronaldo or Messi leave the way some of you re talking about this.

Just about sums up where we are when Sammy Ameobi's departure is so mourned.

Yes.

There's a relatively high chance he'll score vs us if he plays regularly for Boro simply because there's only 23 teams in the league so if he hits goals in 5 different games over the season then 20% chance it's against us.

But a single goal vs us isn't reason to keep him, likewise a single goal vs us isn't a reason to sign someone (Hiya Arter). It's what is done over a season that counts and whilst appreciating Sammy brought the wildcard factor sometimes to games, the stats don't lie. His output is muted, inconsistent and for a club that wants to get promoted is not enough.

Sign a more consistent player with better output and no one will give a shit we let Sammy go.

All the best Sammy. Easily one of the best signings in recent years. Loved having him in the side under Lamouchi for the wildcard factor.

Strange that promotion & silverware winners MON & now Warnock rate you when you're allegedly so poor.

Fits well with Colin's boot up to a big target man formations. Can't believe he's not even 30 yet, thought he was nearing retirement. Seems to have been around the game ages.

Scored some crackers for us but could never really manage a full 90 up and down the wing. Wish him all the best.

Wish he hadn't signed for a Championship side so we didn't have to see this thread bumped with passive aggressive 'NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR NOTTINGHAM FOREST apparently...' posts for each of his five goals next season.

That was quite passive aggressive too, I suppose. Don't mind it so much when I do it.

It's definitely coming though. Every time his name gets mentioned on Soccer Saturday from this day forth there will forum debate points up for grabs.

I don't think many people would consider him not good enough for us, he's a solid championship player. Most likely situation is we've signed a first choice winger and all we could offer Ameobi was a contract extension as backup. I'd imagine it was his decision to put the offer on hold and look elsewhere for a club who will offer him more minutes and/or more money as a backup, which he's found

I just hope the replacement isn't Knockaert

Never a more true statement said

If Sammy Ameobi is the standard of player that Forest and fans still want in the side moving forward then there is no way of getting to the PL.

I think it just goes to show the reason why there has been a lack of achievement in the last 20 years is because many of us have forgotten what really decent players look like who play well and are consistent week after week.

We have to want better or nothing changes.

Think it's as much about him being a seemingly honest, decent pro, who seemed to care a bit. He didn't shirk, he gave his best etc etc and we all know that hasn't been something we've been overburdened with in recent years. As has been said before, it is a bit sad that we don't get to feel a connection with players very often if at all anymore - I reflect with huge fondness (not just because of the quality) on the days where you had a Woan, Stone, Pearce, Clough, Chetts, Walker etc etc you could hang your hat on anyone of a number. Now it's just faces passing through.

'Cos they've never signed the wrong players before?

Still doesn't answer the question though does it?

This I've just found from Warnock does a bit I guess........

https://www.nottinghampost.com/spor...-forest-middlesbrough-warnock-hughton-5588186

"I've always thought he's a danger, and I'll be looking to use that danger and have a system where I can get him in positive forward positions."

Let's not forget, Sammy was still the joint 4th top goal-scorer at the club last year. So despite a poor year, he was still a valuable player to have at the club and a genuine threat.

It'll be interesting to see what occurs. I've absolutely no problem with this if we have better lined up. People who are saying "we need better for promotion" are right.

But what I'm not so comfortable with is the fact that we may have just written him off with no real thought to a replacement. We'll see I guess. Who knows, Mighten may step up and make Sammy a 2nd thought in no time. That just seems a bit too hopeful :dunno: But we live in hope. :)

The Counter argument to that Alf would be - A twice promoted Manager out of the Championship manager, who has never been out of the top 4 when he has had a full season in the Championship and who has had 2 LMA Manager of the year awards under his belt doesn't rate him either or he wouldn't have let him go

If it was indeed Hughton's decision.

Which, considering the way we have been run and fact that not 1 player out of contract has renewed their contract, I'm skeptical about.

And let's also not forget that Warnock's promotion record & MON's managerial record both dwarf Hughton's too.

Like I say, let's see what occurs. Until more of the plan unfolds we can't really tell. It's all speculation, and I think most people would wonder why we'd let a player go for free who Warnock rates.

Ameobi was out jumped by Connor Roberts off Swansea last season. Roberts is 5'8". His height is not one of the reasons you play Ameobi.

True but his abilty to hold off defenders and keep possession of the ball is one of his biggest strengths. He's not completely useless with his head either. See his goal at Stoke.

I know that Nuno that I know that Nuno that I know
262 competitive appearances and 22 goals in 11 years as a professional footballer. His transfer fees amount to a massive £0.

I hope Warnock has worked out which game in 10 he’ll score in

I admire the optimism people have of us aiming to have a promotion ready team assembled this season, we barely even have our books balanced!

Sammy’s a talented player and, for a free transfer, made a very decent personal contribution in terms of goals and assists. You can’t help but wish him well.

I can’t say I’m particularly unhappy to see him go, though, because his height on the flanks gave our keeper and defencers too much excuse to boot it up the pitch to him and hope for the best. Correct if I’m wrong, but we made very few goal scoring chances from playing aerial balls to him.
