Media linking us with Will Smallbone as a potential partner for Yates in midfield.

Whoever is pushing that story has got to be on the wind up.

Well, your midfield usually needs to be complementary... Smallbone and Yates are definitely opposites in that respect lol

Watching the replay of our goal and Sunday, his movement off the ball was fantastic with him signalling to Garner where he wanted it. The earlier chance from the free kick showed how he can find himself in the right position at the right time.

Hugely underestimated player in the National media in my opinion.

You have to remember a player only gets any credit if he does the job in the ‘Best league in the world’.

Yates has improved massively this season under Cooper, I think if people expect him to lose his place in the starting 11 next year they’ll be in for a shock.

I don't mind admitting I didn't think he'd make it as a top end Championship player, I'd have never called him some of the stuff you see on Twitter and I'd have always backed him while he wore our shirt but I thought he looked way too technically limited and clumsy. As Haych says above he has improved massively under Cooper.

That’s what makes it clear it was a whipped ball in from Garner, not a speculative shot as the commentator seems to think watching the highlights. A speculative shot would be very un -Jimmy too

How many times has a Yates run into the box led to Garner slipping the ball to him and a goal resulting from it.

Steve Hodge was saying after the game that he absolutely hated it as a player when big tall midfielders used to run in the box because as a midfielder you can't track their run once they are infront of you.

Ryan did it for the goal and has done it brilliantly all season. I hope we don't take that way from his game in the Prem, we have to get him a role in the team where he can arrive in the box from midfield because his physicality is unstoppable however good his midfield opponents are - you simply can't stop a guy of Ryan's size.

If we set up that way he will score plenty in the Prem as well.

He's improved because since SC took over, Yates usually gets the ball played in front of him and his and his teammates' positioning and movement is such that he rarely has to use his left foot. Keep the ball moving, play the ball in front of your teammate, be aware if they have a glaring weakness (in Yates case his left foot is useless). Under Hughton we kept playing him into trouble.

Since then, we've hardly seen the left foot exposed. Also, he has a problem turning quickly which makes him look slightly clumsy. I've seen it exploited by opposition midfielders and playmakers a number of times this season, almost all under Hughton. Solved by altering the shape of the team so Yates is rarely caught in a position like that. Until Cooper solved those things, I'll admit I'd rarely if ever seen evidence of a class player in there, but his passing and movement, positioning etc since then has been superb. BRilliant coaching and credit to Ryan for battling through it and finally taking the chance to show what he can do. I hope he kicks up a gear next season

I know it has at times been a bit of a joke about Yatesy having a 50p head, but if you look at some of the headers he's put away this season there's some incredible technique

His movement and timing of runs finding space to attack in the box is very hard to coach, bias aside I think he's going to be a key figure next season

The defensive side of his game but to have someone who creates chances with his runs into the box when other options are snuffed out like last Sunday is priceless. He had 3 opportunities in the first half, I’m so happy for the lad. Proper Forest legend..

I think the key as far as Ryan is concerned in the prem is we can't afford to leave him out-numbered in midfield against better opposition. Ideally hes got to be in a 3, which probably means we are going to have to play 3-5-2 rather than 3-4-3 as we have for much of this season. If we do that then he has some latitude to play that "old fashioned" box to box role if we can get a foothold in games. If not I think good teams will play around him very easily...

If you want to give him the benefit of the doubt with the playoff final goal (yes, it was officially an OG, but he was right there and forced it), young Yatesy has notched up ten goals this season.

That is some pretty good going for a central midfield player, and yet another testament to the hard work he’s put in to improve his technique and all-round play.

If he's a regular starter next season he will need to be contributing the same again next season to give us a chance to stay up.
