As good as they are, his contributions are limited to spoiling again. With garner also hit & miss currently, we've lost that ability to put our foot on the ball when constantly overrun.

Central midfield is the major worry going into the final. Which is why Davis is a must to keep posession and drive us forward.

I think the current duo are knackered. Not much we can do about it now but next season there needs to be some serious recruitment in this area. Asking a duo to deal with the workload that comes with playing this formation is too much without rotation and it’s obvious that’s the area we struggle in when oppositions bring real pressure to bear.

I’m hopeful that they’re both young and fit enough to bounce back after 11 days without a game.
I would have to question why we have seen so little of Ojeda, even as a bench option, given his pedigree, but it’s understandable that we’ve largely stuck with the same team, given then run we had to go on to get into contention.

Agree about Odeja. No idea what’s happening there. I worry Coops doesn’t fancy him and again I’d emphasise that the system we play puts incredible strain on the two CMs who have to be strong players with very high levels of fitness and industry to cope. I worry Odeja isn’t that sort of player although I’ve nothing to base that on other than instinct and the fact he’s from a pure South American background where technique rather than industry are key

Not sure why it's so surprising to have seen so little of Ojeda, he almost certainly was bought in based on potential rather than current ability. It was a low risk gamble, his charts showed strengths in the right areas but he's so young and undeveloped as a player that it could go either way. At the price we got him for it was a no brainer

He's 21 and never played in a league anything close to the intensity of the championship, I think we gave ourselves this season to work with him off the field and see if we could get him up to speed. Personally I think he's far too light weight and inexperienced to be risked in a 2 man CM with the way we play, it's a tough role and requires a lot of discipline

If anything he could probably do a job in the Zinck role, has plenty of energy to add to the high press and also has decent technique on the ball. Overall it remains to be seen whether he's a work in progress that has a future with us or one of those players who comes and goes with little for us to remember him by

Fair enough. We'll see over the next couple of years.

Also worth pointing out that the workload has fallen on Yates and Garner because of Lowe's injury. Had he stayed fit, then some rotation or at least substitution with Colback would have been possible.

It's always been theoretically possible.

The option to rotate Yates or Garner with Colback can still be done... The only issue is, it involves playing Bong at LWB.

And we do have other CM options too - Such as Ojeda and Cafu.

Cafu is the one who has seen most bench minutes of late - so would probably have played if Garner or Yates were unavailable.

Much as I like Cafu and admire his positivity and enthusiasm hes just not the right player for the way we are setting up to play IMO, assuming we are coming up against quality sides that is.
The way to stifle us is to press hard, overload the midfield and overwhelm our central pair. I think our counter attack is only effective when we play a couple of quick, positive passes through midfield. When we play long from the back we don't look dangerous. I think that's what happened in the second half against Sheff U. So our central midfield pair have to be seriously strong players and I think Cafu lacks the athleticism to face down that sort of tactic.

I don't think Yates or Garner have looked unfit, they just sometimes get overrun by teams that pack out midfield because those two do the job that should be done by 3 most weeks. They both cover huge amounts of ground between them, they are probably both the fittest players in the squad. If they get overrun it's down to the system.

Completely agree with this. We are asking 2 to do the job of 3, but being able to deploy that extra body elsewhere is why we have joy in other areas of the pitch. I'm not criticising either of our two current CM boys either-I think, for what they, are the have given everything and have done a damn good job but ultimately if we are to survive, let alone prosper at a level up from the one we are at we will need to address this area of the pitch...

Incredible how we managed to get promoted for the first time in 23 years with a "League 1 clogger" starting 40+ games.

Well done Ryan, at 24 you're just getting started.

Huge wang too :nottsflag:
