Re: Nigel Clough

In Pearce's autobiography he says the first thing he'd do in management is get Nigel Clough working with him, but that horse has bolted. I suppose the only way you could ever see the two of them together is if one of them gets sacked and drifts out of management and the other invites the other on to their team.

Sheffield United are looking for an academy coach as well...

Positive comments in 2008 in the introduction to Neil Webb's book, I noticed earlier today coincidentally:

http://http://www.nottinghampost.com/Forest-star-recalls-Wembley-years/story-12263118-detail/story.html
In the introduction Nigel Clough recalls: "We never put out a weakened team in those days right from the early rounds of any cup competition.

"We didn't do squad rotation, but then again we didn't have that many players to rotate.

"People today look at Aston Villa or Everton doing well to finish sixth, but we weren't ever out of the top half for years.

"We would regularly score four or five and sometimes six or seven goals.

"We'd go and win at Old Trafford and Highbury. Liverpool used to hate coming to us because they just couldn't beat us.

"I feel sorry for the younger generation who have to hear about it from dads and uncles, but from every year you can pick out games which have special memories, not just the big cup matches.

"The supporters were thinking we'll be watching this for the next 40 years."

Great post, I remember those days really well. We were a force to be reckoned with even in the early 90s. That was why the relegation season was such a shock. Please if you can, look at the tables during the 80s and early 90s before we got relegated, we always ended up in the top 10, and Wembley was our second home. I want those days back :-|

Clough Junior still blames Forest for the way his father leaving the club was handled, specifically Maurice Rowarth announcing his resignation to the press before Clough Snr had decided he was definitely going. The Clough family felt for a long time after that the club had let his father down.

Some people that have posted on this thread need reminding that Brian had also managed Derby to the League title before he ever joined us.

Derby's current success is due to the work Nigel did in building a squad and making the club work financially, they were fools to let him go. McClaren walked into a club that were geared for success due to Nigel's work. I have no doubt he will make a similar success at Sheff Utd, to some extent he really turned them around as soon as he arrived there. They looked to be heading for relegation then pretty soon were almost in the playoffs.

He will never manage us. He feels we let his father down.

I get the feeling Clough junior wanted to crush Billy Davies more than Forest.

If he cannot manage us because of what happened in 1993, it makes no sense that he played for us in 1996.

I'll try and remember the source but I'm almost certain that he has put himself forwards for the managers job twice. Leave it with my ailing memory but don't hold your breath!

He let it be known he wanted the job when Calderwood was sacked.
Source - Pat Murphy, who's a family friend of the Cloughs.

He was. Before Paterson threw a bucket over Fawaz's head he nominated Nigel Clough. I don't know if Clough did it.

Murphy also said last year he couldn't see Nigel Clough being interested at that time as there was still a lot of water to pass under the bridge first. Or something like that.

who is "we" in this case ?

Apart from the fans, is anyone from that era even connected to the running of the club?

Surely grudges like that are kept against people?

Billy Davies had a grudge against Derby, and nobody holds grudges better, and beating them with Forest was a great way of pissing them off. Nigel Clough had been overlooked for the Forest job, some Forest fans were calling him NLN, beating Forest with Derby was a great way of pissing them off. So they collided.

It's merely Derby propagander generated a few years ago to try and lay claim on the Cloughs.

Sad really as he (Brian) was only there 5 minutes, but Derby is rather bland.

Re: Nigel Clough

Nigel Clough's autobiography is one I would like to read.

Another autobiography about a broken person whining endlessly about how his daddy never loved him enough and how he spent his adult life trying to impress him? no thanks. At least Stuart Pearce understands the psychology of him being told he wasn't good enough.

As to Nigel Clough as manager of Forest, I'm not against it for all the Derby reasons. I just don't think he's the right man for the job. He went through a LOT of players at Derby, and actually spent a lot of money, despite the whole 'non-league' moniker. His handling of the Tomasz Cywka poor performances was atrocious, and not a way to encourage better displays, or attract players from other countries; borderline racism for a start.

Re: Nigel Clough

I hope the original source for this rumour actually mentioned Nigel Clough and not just "an ex-Derby manager". I noticed Paul Jewell has left his role as assistant manager at West Brom, after only 1 game (he says sacked, West Brom say mutual consent). Let's be honest, it's the sort of appointment we'd make

If he still blames a club which is completely different to the one which Clough Snr left in 1993 then he really is taking it too far. There is literally no one here left to be accountable for what happened. I won't discount the fact that he build a decent squad capable of better things at Derby, but he underachieved with that squad that he built. At Sheff U they can beat anyone in the Cup but aren't consistent in the League and their League placing reflects that.
