Re: Nigel Clough

I'm with you Jim, he said far too much when he was at Derby, as they all do he knows the rules.

Actions speak louder than words. Homegrown player and the club's second highest goalscorer of all time, over 300 appearances, heaven knows how many assists and was kicked to bits for the cause week in week out......but no we must hate him because he said some nasty words once. Pathetic.

Re: Nigel Clough

Clough Junior still blames Forest for the way his father leaving the club was handled, specifically Maurice Rowarth announcing his resignation
It was Fred Reacher, Rowarth was long gone (with 100 grand of Cloughie's cash) by then.

Ignoring the unlikely scenario of him wanting to replace Pearce...

I don't blame any of his actions from when he was at Derby. He is fiercely competitive, that's all it is for me.

Sometimes it gets the better of him, his handling of officials could be better, but he just wants to win. I think he'd get more out of our squad than Pearce can.

That doesn't help me decide whether to watch it or not. Anyone got a link to his see tape, gotta be worth a laugh.

Commons did alright for us then turned his back, I think that he is a knob too.
I also think that he is an incredibly ordinary manager too who would bring us no benefits, so it's still a no from me.

Turned up with Stuart Pearce at the Junior Reds Xmas panto in the Jubilee Club to say hello. Put in the groundwork with me.

Re: Nigel Clough

I think Nigel Clough's intentions by talking down about Forest were to show his allegiance and commitment to his employers, who were Derby at the time. It was almost like 'I know I've played for Forest, but make no mistake I'm not on their side now. I'm with you lot' in an attempt to get Derby doubters on his side.

I only ever saw his words as coming across like that.

I'm hoping the Pearce saga puts all the romantic notions of employing ex reds to bed.

We need to employ good, successful managers who fit the job we require. I'm not sure Nigel does that, and I'm even less sure he'd move from Sheff Utd anyway.

I love my dog. He's ace and an Alf family member if ever there was one. I wouldn't employ him to anything other than hump bitches and wreck my carpet.

I think that's the issue with employing "legends". I think fans sometimes forgive a lack of managerial experience/achievements because the person in question was an exceptional player for the club in the past. Not necessarily thinking about SP there as such, but would Alan Shearer have stood a chance at the Newcastle job a few seasons back if he wasn't Alan Shearer? Like-wise Bryan Gunn at Norwich is another one. Both legends for their clubs but frankly awful managers (and neither has managed since).

I think a good manager is a good manager and if there's some link to the club then that's just a bonus. Likewise, a poor manager will always be poor; returning to 'their' club just doesn't change that.

Of our ex-players who are still interested in management, I would only label MON as a good manager (and we've got no chance). Clough has potential though I think. Your others are unproven (Cooper) or poor (Keane).

Kenny Dogleash won the titles with Liverpool. Keegan had Newcastle playing the best stuff they've played for generations.

Let's list all the legends in charge - good ones and bad ones. Who else?

Brian Little at Villa? Won a League Cup. Better than what Villa have had since.

Re: Nigel Clough

Was George Graham an Arsenal legend? Hoddle flopped at Spurs.

Fine some of these already had strong managerial credentials before taking those jobs. Perhaps not great comparisons. But at the same time Alan Shearer, whose example keeps being given and Bryan Gunn had no real previous experience. Pearce and Clough do. So its unfair to use those examples too.

Exactly,in any business you employ a manager to look after your business purely on ability, sentiment doesn't and shouldn't enter into it.

Using the term "legend" very loosely in some cases but:

McClaren at Derby
Alan Curbishley at West Ham
Roberto Martinez at Wigan
Di Matteo at Chelsea
Pep Guardiola at Barcelona
George Graham at Arsenal
Dalglish at Liverpool
Keegan at Newcastle
Souness at Liverpool
David O'Leary at Leeds
Ardiles at Spurs
Frank Clark at Forest
Megson at Forest (I know, I know)
Calderwood at Forest

Quite a mixed bag.

One or two borderline legends there.

I think that's the problem with Fawaz. He often appears to do things more for the romance of Nottingham Forest. Talking like he's one of us on twitter, speaking about our proud history like a fan of 40 years would, listening to the fans too much in first appointing and sacking Billy Davies. Employing club legends in the hope that they'll magically understand and formulate a plan of what's required to bring us back to the top.

Somewhere along the line he needs to separate himself as a fan and a businessman. Don't get me wrong, it's nice that he cares and tries to connect with us but if you connect too much, when it comes to making major decisions you can be too easily influenced by a little motley crew rather than looking at the bigger picture.

Re: Nigel Clough

Can we go foreign for some more examples - Johan Cruyff at Ajax and Barcelona?

Di Stefano won the Uefa Cup and discovered Emilio Butragueno at Real Madrid I think.

Nils Liedholm did ok at AC Milan, but not compared to how he did at Roma, and Sacchi followed him and won the European Cup twice etc.

Maradona with Argentina and Platini with France didn't win any trophies, while Van Basten was doing well at the start of Euro 08 (but not as well as he did in Euro 88 as a player). National team managers maybe don't count anyway.

Re: Nigel Clough

Legends work well at clubs when they are good managers. The problem occurs when they get jobs because of their legendary status and not what they have done as a manager.

Seedorf at Milan. Lasted 5 months.

Guardiola at Barcelona was a massive success.

Both their first jobs in management.

To be fair, Guardiola managed the B team for a few years and won the league so it wasn't a complete unknown.

In the group stages that Dutch team in 08 was brilliant. Then they fell apart against Russia. 3-0 against Italy, 4-1 against France, what a start. Shame van Basten didn't stay on. The 2010 team was a disgrace.
