Neco Shay Williams

Should've sent him to Leeds when we had the chance.

Was genuinely worried that he had hit his peak too early as that wasn’t going to be good enough, but so happy that he has kicked on a level.

He just looks so much better defensively now, and also much more confident on the ball.

Even if this is his peak, I’m happy with that, as he’s a good premier league full back with a great attitude too.

If he can kick on even further, happy days.

Signing Montiel should be well off the table now. Spend that money on a left back instead.

Neco's been through a fair few things since he arrived at Forest.

Discovering the death of his grandfather (his hero - who he was extremely close to) during World Cup 2022, then somehow finding the mental strength to play against USA following day. People also accused Neco of being mentally weak to go off with concussion for a ball to the head in this World Cup.

Being written off by many fans in his early days at Forest and kept out of the team by Aurier for a large part of last season.

Fighting his way back into the team however then suffering another setback with a broken jaw towards the end of the season.

Seeing the manager who brought him in get the sack. Re-adjusting to a new manager. He's now one of the player of the season contenders. At the tender age of 22. He might look like he's in a boyband, but he's got big cojones and a lot of talent.

I think it was Dore who said he'd spoken to Neco's dad at a game. He said Liverpool didn't train full backs (or whatever you want to call them) to play in a four. They only did back 5 training.

This would make sense as to why he's struggled at times. He's certainly got to grips with it quickly and looks like one of our best players at the minute.

I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t as they play a back 4. However TAA is shit at defending too. Maybe they should start!

He has developed very well this season, and has become a bright-spot in a season of disruption and struggle.

I like him.

Just shows what can happen when you actually get on the pitch and have a run of games..
Absolutely - earlier in his Forest career he looked at times, all at sea; but, he has been given the opportunity and has knuckled-down and grabbed it with both hands, and he‘s now (to use a cliché) one of the first names on the team-sheet.

He was getting really good last season before his mate rearranged his face.
Certainly; not an ideal end to the season, I am surprised that Neco didn’t pay him back with a Robin Friday-style pony-and-trap in the kitbag whilst on international duty?

I'm not intending to call anyone out...but there's an awful lot of this thread that has not aged well.
So who really thinks this is worth paying 17m for now? I get there's potential as he's still only a kid but his end product is awful, he seems to be lacking in tactical awareness and a bit of maturity, and has had a fair few of tricky opponents.

From the time we have seen him, Aurier looks a much better option when he's fit, at both ends of the pitch.
Williams regards himself as a WING back.
The problem is, as a winger he has a lack of pace, can't dribble, and his crossing is inaccurate.
His shooting is also poor.
As back, he has forgotten about positioning, the need to avoid getting wrong side of your man, and not diving in.
As a professional footballer, he has forgotten to avoid letting the opposition wind you up, and that there are no prizes or squaring up to opponents when they have wound you up.
I predict he will finish up playing for some mid-Championship nothing club.
He's inferior to Spence who we should've signed instead
I just don't think the lad is very intelligent.

He has the attributes. He's quick, he's strong, he's a good tackler, he can kick a ball well, but it's the glue holding those attributes into being an effective player (i.e. his tactical ability) which is holding him back.

Earlier on when he had chances to get forward in the season he was crossing and when they did beat the first man they were technically fine crosses but tactically the wrong option (e.g. he'd just crossed it because he was in that area of the pitch not seeing whether there was actually anyone to cross it to.

So often he just decides to stand off attackers and let them do what they want when we see opposition full backs pressing at the very least and putting physical pressure on the attacker. Then we see the odd thing where he will just tackle someone in a silly area where it's unnecessary and getting a silly card or something.

I didn't think he was much worse at LB than he is at RB which really says a lot about his ability.
I have to agree, I’m really struggling with the chap.. I’d rather Finn Back at this moment..
Unbelievable that we paid £17m for him. Liverpool saw us coming there.
Getting a bit bored of watching him ball watching and never tracking the run off his shoulder. You can tell he's learned his game in the shadow of Trent Alexander Arnold. Proper schoolboy stuff sometimes.
He was dreadful in the first half.

Dug in second half but I’m still not a fan at all. He’s a nothing player for me, I can’t see what position he plays.
Great player, just not suited for full back that is all.
He'll never make a FB in this league. He just doesn't have the positioning or defensive sense. Maybe he did have two players attacking him at times but even when just one he had no idea how to defend him.
He was absolutely shit at wing back earlier in the season. Lots of energy so looks good o the eye but is so unproductive it is all for nothing. Hence why he has been dropped by our manager who personally wanted him.

He had not been a good buy for the money in any way.
My expectation is for 17m he can play right full back and he can’t. You’re celebrating him being able to run around on the left wing

In our situation and our budget he was one of our biggest outlays financially so I don’t get this ‘learning on the job’ shite.

And lastly he didn’t score, he ran through on goal and ran out of pace.
However much he cost, it was too much, at the moment. Looks out of his depth at times, which is a major disappointment.

Get well soon, Serge. Please.
Massively out of his depth and cost us an absolute fortune.

We’ve basically spent 17M for Brennan to hang out with his mate after training.
I had the false belief that he was great offensively but suspect defensively.

He's not. He's just poor. I struggle to see what he offers to be honest.
Colback is genuinely a better option than he is his supposed natural position ATM. He's been shocking every game and also offers nothing offensively to cover up his many defensive errors.
He is not quick or strong enough to play fullback at this level

Aurier is a huge loss, he would have just barged Benrahma out the way today, Neco lost countless physical battles with him.

Unfortunately there is no easy solutions so we will just have to back him until Aurier is back.
This lad blows in a back 4.
Lacks composure, lacks any kind of strength, lacks game nous and lacks skill. Deadset liability. You might as well have a lamp post play in n his position.

I get that he’s young but at least show us some hope that there is potential that we can develope.

Wast of money
At Premier League level. He cant defend, he’s not strong enough, he’s not good in the air, he’s not rapid, he can’t dribble, he can’t cross, his decision making is questionable. Looks an absolute terrible signing. As for people saying he wasn’t bought as a right back and can only play as a wing back then the guy has no career in football if hes that limited.
We wuz robbed by Liverpool. Paying £17m for him may well be one of the big reasons the scouting team got their marching orders back in Autumn.
Just watched the highlights (?!?) again and so often it's his poor positioning, slow response or lack of physicality that compromises the whole defensive shape and organisation. Liability.
Not sure what these tools are. He lacks pace and strength. Can't cross it, poor passer.
I think if we stay up we'll bin him and look for an upgrade.
Richie [Laryea] is better, right now, than Neco is.
I feel sorry for Neco tbh. It's not his fault that someone in our transfer committee decided he was good enough for the Premiership. He is woefully short but it's not his fault. We got well and truly mugged by Klopp.
I honestly don't feel like he's worth £1m
He’s a young lad but currently looks a million miles away from PL standard. I can’t imagine Fin Back would have been any worse.

The price we’ve paid isn’t his fault - that lies with the club.

The worst part for me is I could almost forgive the haphazard defending if he was linking with Johnson well or looking like a creative source from deep but at the moment not only is the defending non existent he also offers nothing going forward.
Williams will probably be OK for us next season but he'll never be a full back at this level IMO.
Liability and I'm not convinced he'd be any better than adequate in the championship should we go down.
If Aurier is not ready to return I think Cooper should look at any and all realistic options to replace Williams. Colback, Toffolo. Heck, even Doris the tea lady would be a better shout imo.
I think it is a reflection of his lack of football intelligence. He's clearly got physical attributes, but mentally he's got little to offer.
