Yup, the number of partnerships (and even shapes) helps nobody.
Pretty much everyone of our players has looked nervous and like they are overthinking everything

Lack of familiarity and a lack of game-plan for me.

I genuinely think that a few weeks of Nuno will give us a better idea where the real problems lie with the players, I expect we will see quite a few take a step up if they get given a run of games in a settled side, with a proper game plan.

I wonder how much it's the keeper(s) behind them too - there's nothing worse for a CB than having zero confidence in the keeper.

Did you see Nuno's post match on the pitch? When discussing their goals he looked thoroughly pissed off and said something like "this is a physical game, the players need to learn it's ok to touch an opponent, they must get closer and stop free headers".

I suspect that will be the first fire that they work on in training.

Edit, from 2:25:

Nuno is 100 per cent right. It will take him time to sort this out. We have been doing this all season look at the Brighton 2nd goal and Spurs first goal. Ball in to our box causes chaos. It is basic simple defending and the goals we have given away are so preventable. This is the best league in the world. If you give top class players time they will kill you. If we had just done the basics yesterday we would have got at least a point. This is in part down to poor coaching the fact we are still doing it in December is just poor. Hopefully our new coach will sort this out.

Now just a minor reflection maybe our last change should have been Montiel or Tavares for MGW. Then again they would have likely just been marking as well.

And I know I shouldn't speak ill of the departed, but that's on Cooper. Very few of those changes were enforced.

Not excusing Moussa though, he needs to do better.

I think now Cooper is gone people might realise just the mess we are in. This is partly down to him. Changing the team every week. Having defenders constantly marking space instead of actual players. He has a played a part in the mess we are in. Just as EM and the rest of the leadership team have. It’s a collective mess.

Cooper will go down as a Forest legend and rightly so but it’s almost like peoples love for him which he deserves blinded them from seeing the reality and we were in a real mess.

It might take Nuno until early February to sort this mess out. If we do not sort the defence out we will go down it’s that simple. Just have to hope Nuno can fluke a win against Newcastle or Man Utd. Then work with them on the training ground as we have 3 weeks until Brentford away after that. Also need to bring in a keeper before Brentford ideally Navas to give the back 4 or 5 some confidence.

I agree with this but I'm speculating that some of the many team changes were due to the ridiculous size of the squad that he had been given. Whether thats keeping them happy or too many options etc who knows. But its not normal. And I agree the keeper doesnt instill any confidence either. But still think Niakhate would not be in my back 2 or 3 if everyone is fit thats for sure.

He’s been OK-Good since he arrived but rarely any better than that

I can’t think of many (any) occasions that he’s been one to single out as a stand out player. Compared to Worrall who’s much more up and down - but has had some genuinely memorable ups in the past season and a bit (in amongst the equally obvious downs)

Moussa seems to be one that gets a bit of a free pass from the fans for whatever reason where in truth he’s been significantly outshone by a Brazilian kid who’s only played a handful of games

I think there’s the potential for a very good player in Niakhate but he’s not progressed at all at Forest to date. Even his throws which were much lauded after the Liverpool away fixture last year haven’t made any massive contribution but his untimely shoulder injury may well be a factor there. Maybe the new set piece guru can help him get back to full Delap-mode?…

One of many players who needs to pull his socks up and produce more for us. Seems to be a solid dude with the minerals and attitude so it’s on him to show that next level

Fingers crossed NES can help him get there

Moooooooooooooooose!

I think he was one of a few acquisitions that were identified partly for leadership qualities and a potential future captain. From the interviews and bits I’ve seen he talks and acts like one, needs to play like one on a more consistent basis though.

And the converse, too. There's an interesting BBC article today by Karen Bardsley on the Reya/Ramsdale conundrum at Arsenal. It hadn't occurred to me that the keeper needs to be as familiar with the quirks and preferences of the centre halves as they do with the keeper so that the defensive unit can function together instinctively.

He was very good against Villa (Watkins) this year and Arsenal last year, but yeah agree with the point generally.
He has been good against pacy players, and does do a lot of good things in each game but doesn't seem so great in the air sometimes and can ball watch in the penalty area. He will need to improve under Nuno and I am sure he will as he has a really good attitude.

While I agree, they were probably expecting to get sent off or concede a penalty if they so much as breathed on an opponent yesterday.

Maybe his inconsistency won't make him everyone elses cup of tea but I love him.

Aggressive, strong, quick - it's hard to find all those things in defenders. Really good game again today. Shame he is going to AFCON.
I am also a big fan. He’s now looking like the player I saw in Germany, who was an absolute rock at the back for Mainz.

Definitely. Hes a Rolls Royce of a defender.
