He's always been that way - I remember constantly disagreeing with his analysis when he was on football focus and wondering how on earth he could have got to that opinion.

I ultimately came to the opinion that he was either a cleverly disguised idiot (he speaks well) or a contratrian who gains his attention/progress by deliberately looking for the opposite line.

(I'd guess the latter as it's kept him in quite a long career, although that's standard for the beeb).
Without wishing to thought of as racist, wasn't his appointment to Football Focus a bit of an early-days bit of tokenism to the equality agenda?
I rated crooks as a player.
He has never impressed me as a "pundit".

The thing I remember most about Garth Crooks is the impression Alistair McGowan used to do of him where he'd conduct interviews with impenetrably nonsensical questions.

Which probably doesn't say much for Garth Crooks as an entity in of himself.

No idea on that - he talks well (while simultaneously talking bollocks of course) and formed a media career early (when still playing I think?)... You can't really fault his foresight in seeing the BBC as a job for life in one way or another once you're in the door, regardless of fuckwittery (or in some cases sex crimes). I don't like the BBC.

Next time my bus or train turns up late, I'm going to congratulate the transport company because the 'expected' arrival time was really good.

Equally, I love patting myself on the back for what I might have achieved in life, rather than what I have done. It gives me a real sense of self satisfaction.
Good point.

Maybe they should be named failure stats.

Stats are useful and not useful at the same time. They paint a picture of that particular moment in time. One stat by itself is a bit useless but if you have lots and lots of stats you can build up something substantial but you have take into account at the same time non statistical parameters, like watching the person for yourself and future potential.

As for Turner being less likley to concede a goal 12 seconds after kicking it than Jose Sa, well if all believe that means Turner is just as good as other keepers than surely Wolves will snap our hands off at a swap deal? Saves us spending anything.

Ever heard the cliche: "Lies, damn lies , and statistics"?

I can’t say whether it was tokenism or whether “plays for Tottenham“ was what swung it for the Beeb. My problem with him isn’t particularly that I disagree with what he says (as with any other pundit, sometimes I will, sometimes I won’t and the pundit has the considerable advantage of having played the game), but rather how he says it. His delivery is slow, earnest and ponderous, giving the impression that he is carefully and kindly explaining something very complex to someone with no understanding whatsoever of the subject. Given that 99% of his audience wouldn’t be listening to him if they didn’t have at least some knowledge of and interest in the game, he could make his point in half the time and without giving his host and fellow pundits that stare that silently says “This might be too complex for you but I’ll persevere”. I’ve usually got to the point of what he is saying long before he has…

Long and refreshingly honest interview with Turner here. Not sure I agree he's been punished for every mistake he's made - I can think of a few he's gotten away with - but comes across as a decent chap who's trying his best. Not sure about his world cup predictions mind, and doubt he'll be here past the summer:

I can see him just being our second keeper tbh, wouldn't mind it.
