Matchday 8: Barnsley Fan Comments

We don't really, we've a side with experience throughout the spine:

Lolley 27
Silva 26
Grabban 31
Sow 30
Dawson 35
Adomah 31
Ameobi 27
Samba 25
Watson 34
Robinson 26

Etc. We have Cash and Worrall who are both 22. That's it.

Worrall, Ribeiro, Cash, Carvalho all 22.

Semedo, Yates, Johnson, Mir all will have involvement too and are young lads.

We definitely have experience through the team, but we've got a good amount of young lads too.

Samba, although 25, has very limited experience too. He's only become a no.1 in the past couple of seasons.

Hucknall and Linby pits were heavily picketed, as too was Babbington which was located within the city.

What a lot of those Yorkshire football fans are too ignorant to realise is that a good number of Notts miners also stayed out during the strike.

I used to travel on the Hucknall coach back in the 70s.The majority of those on the coach were miners,100% NUM..As you say Otis, most went on strike, and stayed out for the duration. They were then sacked.
A huge number of Forests support were miners, tight knit guys from the city and surrounding areas...NUM donkeys jackets were a common sight, both home & away...

Two of those aren't our players. The other two you mentioned have a grand total of 2 league minutes this season.

That's why I said they 'will' have involvement.

I don't care if they're our players, they'll still be a part of our team being younger on a match day.

The other 4 are 22 and all will play key roles this season, regularly starting.

Which makes us an experienced side with a smattering of players who are younger, if not young.

I think there's a pretty perfect blend really.

Samba and Silva in mid 20s, but Samba has limited experience.

Then 4 22yr olds and 5 with more experience.

Well balanced, but I wouldn't say we have an overwhelmingly experienced team.

Clifton had a pit even though is wasn't in Clifton is was on Queens Drive just over the bridge , My Grandad told me hundreds of blokes would all walk to the pit every day from Clifton , Said it was a strange sight but that's what they did back in the day .
Said when they was building the Bridge it wasn't open to traffic and they would all walk across it even jumping the last bit before it was fully formed, Not sure how true this is but back in the 50s I don't think health and safety had really been invented.

First half should have seen Barnsley dead and buried.
They deserve credit for sticking with it and out-competing us in the 2nd half, despite us scoring and them not.
The comment that implies blame attaching to their keeper (only had 1 shot to save, and didn't) does an injustice to him.
He was quick and decisive off his line and was confident when taking crosses.
I don't think Watson gave him a chance with the shot for our goal.
I rate the Barnsley fans - 1952 in the away end, all, to a man stood and applauded for the full 1-minute of Clough-time.

1 shot on target takes away the context of Grabban being through twice, which were arguably the best chances of the game. Think the keeper got a bit lucky with the second one, coming out a long way. If Grabban had managed to dink it past his leg, he’d have been off.

Their keeper was the outstanding player on the park. The only reason they were able to play such a high line, and the main reason we weren't ahead at half time, was because he was so effective at sweeping up danger.

First half of those comments were great, the second half were a little bit ott they were never that dominant and we weren't scared of them, neither do they look like they will go down.

Re the scab chant I always find it funny, I was born after the miners strike and non of my family are miners so I really don't care. I do however find it ironic that the same fans who say we live in the past call us scabs.

Thanks for posting Calvin.

It is still technically 1984 in Barnsley.

Bestwood, Gedling and Cotgrave were classed as Nottingham pits, I believe.

I know what you mean though, a lot of our fans have no connection to mining.

Hardly anybody I knew were miners including me but in the 80s you had it rammed at you with forest that many times you ended up thinking “f*** it” were all scabs then. It just made us more tight knit imo so bollocks to em.

Agreed I think it's a well balanced side but we're not a particularly young team at all.

I’m from Sutton so was in the thick of it, used to go to Mansfield matches during the strike when they played the likes of Rotherham, it was chaos. Donkey Jackets fighting all over the place.

At Forest I only really connected it with the west Notts part of the fan base or the outskirts. As a city I don’t think anyone thinks of Nottingham as a mining city.
It could be argued forever more I suppose.

I know a few lads who were at Cotgrave and one who was at Calverton, otherwise everyone else I know who was in mining are from Mansfield way. I've never really got the scab thing aimed at Forest, don't give a f*** like, just don't get it.

The Zenith Data Systems Cup?!

And you lot moan about some of today's competitions being tinpot!

We bossed that tournament. Two cracking games of football at Wembley. There were some good finals we didn't make too

Think it was only set up because English clubs had no European competition. It was probably treated similarly to how the League Cup is now by a lot of clubs.

I remember that Barnsley defeat. Was disappointing.

The best competition I miss is the Guinness Soccer Sixes. Played midseason, Forest and quite a few top flight sides sent star players to play indoor football for a few days, and wanted to win.

We should be thrown out of Europe again. It was probably better.

Imagine this in the twenty-first century when the mere mention of 'cup tie' sends thousands of football fans into a trance, vacantly rocking back and forth repeating "...this season specifically is all about the league...".

I loved indoor football, playing and watching. Soccer Sixes might have been the greatest tournament. Beating Man Utd on pens in the final...

Proud to be a scab...Yeh,I bet you are!
Brian Clough was a socialist. He supported the miners throughout and beyond.
Consider that,Barry...

Supported the striking miners whilst the fans of his club we're subjected to violence and intimidation even though hardly any of us have never been near a mine. Like I said we all stood together because of it .they tarred us all with the same brush so f*** em.

At least they can’t accuse us of living in the past when we chant about being champions of Europe.

The post below was made on a Barnsley forum five years ago. Could be applied to the Peter Kay lookalike in the twitter video...

Nottingham is only down the road Animal, if you feel strongly enough to direct your vitriol at football supporters in 2014 you might get a better reception on Nottingham Town hall steps with a placard and a megaphone. Why are you at the game ? Go straight to Nottingham first thing.

Shouting political abuse at a bunch of kids over the other side of the pitch really is pointless but if it makes you feel better.

That doesn't mean Cloughie was right. As good as the intentions might be for Socialism it has never worked anywhere in the world throughout history and never will.
