That's what you get when you change manager every 8 months. We went from an owner in Doughty that would sit on his hands until it was absolutely necessary to sign a player to an Arabian circus in Fawaz to the Greeks who until about 15 months ago seemed to just be using us as an Olympiakos dumping ground or somewhere to do an agent a favour. Luckily for them by luck or judgement they hit the jackpot with Cooper.
I agree with manager changes but think that's a bit harsh on the greeks really. We would never expect Oly to be able to send us ready made championship players and a lot of what they sent us for free we sold on for decent money at this level. The agent thing, everyone here was excited about being the next Wolves at the time, and just because we didn't get quite as good players as they did, you can't blame the greeks for that.

And for the record I wanted us to stick with Hughton, as I did with Sabri, Montanier, Warburton and even back to Pearce and O'Driscoll. I looked at other clubs who stuck with their guy with envious eyes, but thankfully we re-rolled and got a Yahtzee with Cooper.

I think aside from twitter outbursts and failed payments I wouldn't have said the Greeks were an improvement on Fawaz really for the first few years. We still had random signings and lots of them, still had managers sacked every 5 mins and still seemingly had no real plan. I suppose they had more of a structure behind the scenes than Fawaz (not difficult) but just had incompetent people doing it so pointless really.

That's until they realised they couldn't run us like a Greek club really and they settled on Dane who in turn brought Cooper in. We'll never know how close they were to sacking Cooper after the Leicester game but it at least seemed from the outside they were on the verge of returning to their previous impulsive madness.

I really hope lessons have been learnt now about stability and thinking more long-term but I always get the sense Marinakis is only ever a few bad results away from wanting everyone sacked 😆

I know little about either of them, but Mason Holgate sounds to me a better bet than Michael Keane.

Completely disagree. Prem survival is the most lucrative income. Risking that for a couple of mill and improving your rivals would be incredibly stupid
More that they need to sell to raise funds to actually buy players to try and help them survive. They have so many they want to sell already they won't be picky.

I honestly think the opposite with Vangelis. I think he’s trigger happy in Greece because it’s a very different context to us, but he’s stuck with the last couple of managers longer than perhaps the conventional wisdom would suggest - Hughton got about 4 games too many which didn’t work out, Cooper would have been fired at any other prem team but that has seemed to work well for now.

‘A bit better structure behind the scenes’ is one of the biggest understatements I’ve ever seen on this forum. Do you not remember Kuwaiti bank holidays, players not being paid on time, constant winding up orders, the neglect of the community trust, the neglect of the ground facilities and staff, paper fuckin season tickets? Jesus Christ. Short memories.

Absolutely Matt - and not forgetting the total f***ing shame and embarrassment of being within a matter of days of playing our first home game of the season behind-closed-doors because Fawaz regarded the requirement of a Ground Safety Certificate as an irrelevance.

To even attempt to liken the current ownership with the al-Hasawi circus is laughable beyond extreme. The only notable thing they did was to offload their mess to EM, and they almost managed to f*** that up.

He was a bit trigger happy for his first couple of seasons, but he's given our last three managers (Sabri, Hughton and Cooper) plenty of time to be fair.

The scattergun transfer policy prior to Dane Murphy's arrival was shit, but hopefully that's a thing of the past.

EM has stuck to FFP, learned from his mistakes, has invested in the academy, is in the process of expanding the City Ground, the club has kept out of trouble during his reign and has achieved promotion to the Premier League under his watch.

Fawaz breached FFP, never learned from his mistakes, had the club in court every other week, nearly got us relegated to the third tier, amongst numerous other things.

The difference between EM and Fawaz is night and day IMO.

Can't Play Left-Back
Just weighing in on the Lansbury debate. He was good under O'Driscoll and Billy Mk II. He played further up the pitch, playing one-twos on the edge of the box, shooting and getting into the opposition area. Then from Pearce onwards, all our managers seemed to think he was a Championship Pirlo (maybe he did himself) despite the fact he couldn't tackle and his passing was wayward. Playing as an 8 or a 10 he was effective. Pretty inconsistent as a 6 though. It's also worth noting that he looked better when he had players like Reid, Cohen, Guedioura and Vaughan next to him. Less effective with Tesche, Gardner, post-injury Vaughan and a young Osborn next to him. It's almost like it's easier to play well next to better players.

That's why I wouldn't panic too much about our squad players getting battered yesterday (annoying though it was). Individually, coming in to the first XI for a game or two to replace an injured/suspended player is very different from all of them playing together. Still, like everyone else, a centre-half, a central midfielder and a centre-forward for the first XI would be welcome additions. If that means Cook, LOB and Surridge and/or Dennis have to go (even just on loans) then so be it.

he difference between EM and every other chairman we had since we got relegated is night and day. At least under fawaz, we never got a 3 year tour in the third tier unlike under our previous chairman.

Then we’d probably still be in Division 3 now.

He's a really good defender whenever I've seen him. Pacy, reads the game and tackles well.

Has a lot of passion which can sometimes spill over the edge but I've always preferred those guys on my side than against me. Just needs to channel that aggression correctly.

Think some people might be surprised at how good he actually is, because he's been at a low morale Everton team for quite a while now. And I know Cooper can get even better out of him.

Wonder for how much, we’re so lacking a pacey centre back.
I've always liked him from the outside. Begrudgingly. He brings a lot of heat and passion.

It's exactly what Forest need in defence. I just hope if we do sign him, he controls the passion a bit. Because he's often on the edge with his will to win. His defensive capabilities are not in question. He just needs to get away from Lampard.

My brother is a season ticket holder at Barnsley where Holgate was on loan at one point. He said that he thought he was similar to John Stones who was also there on loan the season previous and expected him to kick on loan Stones did.
Definitely see the same talent from an early age.

For whatever reason at Everton, it hasn't happened. I think their club is full of negative vibes. Or maybe Mason just needs a fresh start to kickstart his career. He's got it in him. I have no doubt.

Couldn't get in the side which has won the 4th bottom trophy for the past 2 seasons? No thanks.
