Re: Marcus McGuane

Personally I think all our energies in the January window are better spent focused on the players we need for that season there & then.

McGuane could be the next Cash in 5 years, but that won't count for anything if we don't support him with the players he needs that season to make it count, and are focused on chasing the next Cash again then.

Someone's got to spend the time scouting, networking, negotiating etc. for these players. Focus that time elsewhere and we may have landed better players than the likes of Diakhaby & Bong to get us up.

Future signings keep us chasing the future. By all means make them, but nail the core signings we need first.

(would edit the above post, but it won't let me)

Simply put, if McGuane comes good, I'd sooner we signed players who supported that in the season he does so, than sign someone else who'll be good in 5 years, and flog him to fund some of the time involved getting there.

It's part of the cycle of failure which keeps us stuck where we are. At some point you have to look at a strong squad, stop building for the future, and grab your chance.

So, what you're basically saying is you can't look to the future and the present at the same time then Alf?

You're mistaken if you think the recruitment people spent all of last January chasing this lad, because Gary Brazil - who recommended him in the first place, having kept tabs on him since he was at Arsenal - did most of the work, just as he did with a couple of foreign lads who came in to the U-18s/23s. McGuane got more publicity because he was higher profile and came from Barcelona.

Simply put, you can't use this lad as an excuse to bash Modesto and Anigo, again.

Fair play Otis.

Credit to Gary where I would have originally given it to Anigo then.

Re: Marcus McGuane

Yates is 23 with many games behind him. It was right for him to stay and quite clearly a player Sabri likes, Heff.

I actually think he was 1 of our most consistent players post lockdown. Easy player to beat with a stick for me. Cash & Worrall have had it too in the past. So did Osborn. All have hopefully knocked back the doubters.

When Yates came on - he usually made a positive impact. Don’t think u cud say that about many of the other subs used. Hopefully with a more balanced midfield Yates can be used more effectively and too his strengths. I like him as more box to box midfielder- driving forward.

Agreed. I thought Yates was one of the better performers after the return. Definitely needs a bit of freedom to attack the box when he's on the pitch. I think he has his value in the squad. He won't be a guaranteed starter. But he'll be a permanent fixture in the squad. We can't afford to have 5/6 lads at the quality/level/cost of a Colback.

Totally agree, credit to watson but his not colback. Yates was expected to be more defensive when next to watson and that does not seem to be his strong point.

Great loan move oxford though. Karl Robinson aides play a lot with the ball so he will get plenty of chance to improve and get some confidence in English footy.

Might not work out but you don't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket or two. Just have to put faith in the scouting and development processes we have.

Hopefully this loan is a sweetener for Rob Dickie, but since prem clubs are after Dickie I’d say probably not

Might venture that it is very random us sending MM to Oxford if there ain't summit in it for us

Re: Marcus McGuane

Watched the 1st 45. Oxford 1-0 up.

McGuane shown a couple of nice touches, but can tell he's not played at this level before. Speed of the game is a learning curve for him, he's doing a lot of running off the ball and looks knackered.

Playing as an 8/10, most advanced midfielder of 3 for Oxford, so he's probably not got on the ball as much as he'd like. Good learning experience for him though.

I watched a little bit and he was a lot deeper than he was in their friendly vs Palace, getting a hold of the ball a lot more and heavily involved.

He's going to have a breakthrough season I think. Exciting.

Re: Marcus McGuane

Just read the Oxford website and every post is saying how good McGuane played and was easily the MOM. Perhaps we should have kept him at Forest for this season

I think he'll be better for this year of experience and freedom yo express himself and learn about his game, make mistakes...etc
