Re: James Garner

Glossing over the year 8 analogy.. he is above average height for the worlds population of males (5"9) that includes all of the massive bastards in Denmark. I would say he was more than tall enough to play in that role for a 2nd tier side.

Let's not forget that also includes China and Japan, who especially in the former case, contributes significantly to the population, and who are stereotypically at least on the smaller side.

If you look at the likes of Europe, North/South America and Africa, in other words where most footballers come from, or indeed, just Europe, North America and Aus/NZ, it's going to be much higher.

Certainly, it's probably going to be the case that the average height of a professional footballer in the top 4 divisions in England will be around 6'

Ok the average height for men in the UK is also 5,9. So that's discounting "short people" from what you've admitted is a stereotypical view. Shall I add WWE wrestlers into it and the extras from Charlie and the chocolate factory to make it fairer?

Re: James Garner

I take your point HH.
However young players can be inconsistent and more liable to react to environments that don’t suit them.
I presume that Man Utd see something in him and are looking for the right circumstances in which he can thrive.
Perhaps they feel that Chris Hughton is the man to provide that.

So Man Ure examined the situation at the city Ground and concluded it was the right sort of atmosphere for nurturing their youngster.
Our situation:
1 Closer to the bottom 3 than the mid-table;
2 Can't score in a brothel unless the Madam greases the cat's arse;
3 Lousy discipline;
4 boring monotonous football...
5 Squas populated by aging mercenaries who don't seem to give a shit.

Sounds ideal...

Archie Gemmill was 5 foot, 5 inches.

Does this help? ;)

I thought this was going to be another RIP thread.

Never heard of the player, but if CH wants him - I’m cool with it.

Re: James Garner

Garner — who was born in Birkenhead on Merseyside, and chose United over Liverpool — was earmarked as being suitable to Watford’s style of play under Ivic for a number of reasons. He played as a centre-back up until the age of 15 but has transitioned into a multi-faceted midfielder. His 5ft 10in frame still has room to fill out but he is mobile and that allows him to change the tempo of play when needed. His confidence was on show during his cameo in Sheffield at the weekend, taking corners and willing to get involved in physical battles from the start. One robust challenge on Kadeem Harris, which saw him booked, is unlikely to have worried his head coach. Being able to slot into the combative Championship in all its forms will be a bonus.

He regularly undertakes extra training drills, according to those who trained him at United — including Michael Carrick, who he is often likened to. Garner is comfortable when asked to dictate the play and his range of passing and ability to score goals from distance and follow supporting runs into the box made him appealing to Ivic.

Although this will be the 19-year-old’s first experience of living away from digs, having captained both United Under-23s and England Under-17s at the 2018 European Championship he is known to have a maturity that belies his age.

From the subscription sports news website write up on Garner joining Watford.

Re: James Garner

Watford fans seem to be happy he has ducked off. His best attributes appear to be passing sideways and backwards, which means he will fit right in.

Should be a good centre back midfielder then.

We can't bring Brennan back because he's too young for a relegation battle, but let's drop someone else's youngsters in instead. Cool plan.
