Financial Fair Play (FFP)

I'm one to normally defend the club, but this talk of only finding out a couple of weeks before account submission that EPL treated promotion bonus and COVID payments different to the EFL is on us.

We aren't the only club to have been promoted from the Championship and paid bonuses. Given the materiality of the impact, you would have thought it would be a straight forward piece of research or question to ask or employing someone who has knowledge of the rules at the start of the season and not 3 weeks before the end of the season.

To those who condone the owner’s actions -

would you support another similar action to breach financial rules in a future year?
Not easy to answer that really is it? I mean if it was the difference between relegation and survival then I assume most would say yes. In an ideal world no, of course not.

It a bit like asking: To those that condemn the actions of the board (or to most, Maranakis) would you rather have not breached and been relegated?

The replies would be morally impeccable of course :ROFLMAO:

It depends entirely on the result of those actions. Someone has to stand up to the cartel at some point otherwise we're stuck with it for ever.

What we do will make no difference to the cartel. We do not have the financial muscle to compete against the top six. Marinakis is pretty large but he's not a gulf state.

It's not a nice thought but Forest's are basically in a league between 7th and 20th. A "mid-table" finish in this league which would represent a reasonable finish is 14th-15th. If we f*** about and get points penalties we don't finish that high and put ourselves at risk of relegation.

That's the reality of our situation. Make peace with it.

Keep breaking the rules, keep staying up (not a certainty I admit), keep demonstrating what a shit show the EPL is and how anti-competition their rules are. Works for me.

Oh I have .... I'm grateful we're in that group. Still love the thought of us as an anti-establishment force for good!

We're not. We vote with the big six and clearly think pulling up the drawbridge behind us is hunky-dory.

Marinakis would like nothing more for financial disparity to increase so that Forest can safely amble about in mid-table in perpetuity and he can cream off a bit of the £120m+ a year he gets for Forest doing so.

But that's not the question I answered. Would I be in favour of us breaking the rules again - yes, if it doesn't relegate us. I'd rather we did that than vote with the big 6. I like the thought of us taking a lead against the big 6.

I was just reacting to your post that we're anti-establishment.

We're not.
I said I liked the thought of us being anti-establishment by breaking the rules again. I didn't say we were. I'm not going to argue with you anymore mate but stop putting words in my mouth.

Yes, our push-back against the rich Premier League bosses in their ivory towers was entirely undermined by how we voted last week in the financial distribution pyramid. Hypocritical, in my view. All that matters now is surving relegation.

The governance of the club - the business side - is questionable.
A Financial Director writing a report about impending financial concerns that is ignored, a board with little experience of the sector it operates in, no minute taking, doesn't imply a well run business.
I'm sure intentions were honourable. But it does look a bit incompetent. The then Chair had little direct experience although you would presume he knew about legal obligations, contracts and rules. But as you say the failure to bring in people who knew what they were doing - worse still get rid of those who had some direct experience like Murphy - just seems daft.

The Premier League are making up rules on the fly, everyone can see it, everyone knows it, it's just f***ing ridiculous

I'm done with this season now, all of this financial shit has made it the least enjoyable season as a Forest supporter since the League One days

f*** Marinakis, I don't care how much money he's invested or how much passion he has, he's a ship magnate who knows f*** all about how to run a football club outside of a Greek side that wins the league on autopilot almost every year anyway
Careful Blondie! You’ll have his rabid defenders calling you out for this damning (and somewhat correct) indictment of the ownership.

Or accuse young being a socialist and encouraging you to go and knock one off.

I seriously don't get why some are getting so butthurt at us wanting the club run properly. That's not an irrational attack on the owner because he's fat or something, that's us just wanting NFFC to be at it's best, or at least far further away from it's worst than it currently is.

Literally the only success he's had here was when he pulled his Greek contingent away from the football. I genuinely don't understand why anyone wouldn't want him to do that again; whenever it's involved things go tits-up, sometimes spectacularly.

So the case for the prosecution hangs on us knowingly breaking the rules. When in reality we were only informed of the new made up rules with 4 weeks to go?
No - the rules remained the same.
We were told by the EPL that they would not accept our EFL accounts for 2021/2022 (£30m - promotion bonus's & COVID) 4 weeks before the end of the 2022/23 accounting period.
I assume that these were accepted by the EFL as this had not been raised as an issue any time previously.
This is clear and written in the released report - nothing for bonus's and 12m reduced to 2m for COVID - informed on 8th June 2023

It's sort of amusing that for years fans would get outraged at a lack of investment by club owners, and now we also have to get outraged at too much investment.

Lord knows if there is one thing football needs it's more reasons for fans to be outraged.
The issue isn't "too much" investment, it's too many players every window, many of whom never play and are essentially a waste of time and money.

We often appear to just sign players because we can rather than with any real aim or purpose. This isn't just this season, this is multiple seasons which left us with a decimated squad, relying on loans (which worked), which meant we had to buy 22 players last summer.

The 3 years to 2022 or the p4riod ending 2022 is actually an interesting one.

Remember EFL debt write off doesn't reduce losses, oddly seems to in PL. Then the Covid losses hard to say isn't it, for there was a £2.5m cap on the 3rd year. Might have been challenged later under review had Nottingham Forest stayed down and not sold anyone by June 30th 2022.

Think the combined Covid year was £3m, which means the Covid-19 costs were stated in the Accounts and by process of elimination 5hr debt write off must've been allowed by the PL and £5-6m in FFP Allowables.

Could easily make a case of provided no sales, anything from right on the line to maybe £5-10m over if no sales occurred.

I'm taking the £40m stated loss and knocking off the £20m in Promotion Bonuses.

Still don't get the Promotion Bonuses post Promotion though, how long has it been excluded.
It was included in our accounts as submitted to companies house for year ending June 2022 - just checked on the website

We put these numbers in our original numbers sent in for assessment in March 2023 as agreed with the EPL - they came back to us with their 'assessment' early June 2023
It actually says all of this in the report

Everyone wants the club to be run properly - or at least I hope they do.
It is also not wrong to acknowledge, that although mistakes have been made, it is because of the owner that we are now an EPL club swimming against the tide of the establishment trying to become one of them.
