Which, I maintain, is still the long term goal - as per the American model, a closed league with no relegation and no need to prop-up the remaining 72/74 clubs, consolidating all the money at the top.
For the last decade, at least, the big European clubs promote the idea of a closed league, an idea which is used as a diplomatic tool to get more out of Uefa's each successive new decision. It's a chicken game; I don't believe either Uefa or the big clubs are stupid enough to shoot themselves on the leg. Sport in Europe works differently; you need the idea of promotion and demotion in order to engage more people in a meaningful game.
On the other hand, the distance between the top of the pyramid and its mid floors grows so much as time goes by, that the result may be the same even without closed leagues, in national or international competitions. The Champions League is dominated by a small number of clubs. A mid-ranking European club only has any chance of reaching, say, the quarter finals in the Europa League. The CL is for the rich.

This is a rather apt illustration of how Europe in general is. Growing divides, rich against poor.
I believe, within the next five years - the Premier League will institute some sort of play-off system, whereby the top Championship clubs will have to have a play-off game against the bottom placed Premiership sides with the Premiership place going to the winner - wither the prem Club 'saving' themselves or the Champ club 'proving' they belong. I'm not advocating this, just believe it's coming.
Wasn't it similar to this when the play offs were first brought in with the third bottom team joining 3 to 5 in the lower division in a 4 team format as now but it was abandoned very quickly can't remember whyWhen the second division was added to the League they tried this. See test matches on this page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1892%E2%80%9393_Football_League
Personally I wouldn't object to the third from bottom in the prem playing the third placed team in the Championship for the final Prem place with the top two in the Championship replacing the bottom two prem teams as now.

It was abandoned because there was terrible crowd trouble and it was deemed to be too sensitive for a club to lose its premier league status through a play off, despite championship play off losers effectively suffering the same fate. It's okay for us but not fair on them. Just one more example of the double standards that league works by.
Worse than that you could have the most points in the league and finish 7th i do believe.Don't forget the sweaties have a similar set up, they even split their league so you could be in 6th on less points than 7th .

Yes, there's no need to change something that works very well already.
Jesus. So much free money.

Quite impressive how much the prem makes tbh

Considering the premier league would be defunct without the other 72 league and countless non league teams it's quite galling there's such a difference between just the top two leagues.
I think they do.The Premier League do not believe this to be true though.
