I don't think he should.

Let's be fair, we aren't absolutely brimming with actual top level talent.

If we did sack him, we would presumably have to replace him with someone who would do a better job, and in reality, I can't think of an English manager who would.

If he quits of course that's different.

His record isn't bad. EC runners up in 2020 (21 actually), World Cup SF in 2018 and QF in 2020, qualifying for them is never in doubt unlike under some where it's gone to the wire, probably about as well as we'd be expected to do.

And if you hold any value in the FIFA WRs at all, this is the time we played a side ranked above us, hence not expected to win.

I think he's done enough to make the decision to stay or go, he's done well really and even tonight it was a decent performance so if he goes I feel like it should be because he wants to. This is Deschamps 5th tournament with France and its not done them too much harm keeping that consistency at the top.

The youngsters that are bedding in could be absolute world beaters as well.

Yeah it is a tough one; there are definitely arguments for him staying

I strongly suspect he will step down though

As Forest fans we have to be careful because Cooper could be very high up on the FA's shortlist. I say let Southgate run his course and go to the Euros then make the switch

I actually think a change now would be better for us. Cooper still hasn't proved himself in the Prem yet from an outsiders POV. No way would the FA appoint a manager who's done nothing in the top divisions other than be in the bottom 3. So if Southgate went now, I don't think Cooper would get a look in.

Whereas if Coops keeps us up, or gets relegated but gets us back up, and then pushes us onto bigger things, then he might be considered.

I'd much sooner the change be made now whilst Cooper is out of the limelight.

Southgate and his team have the England set up dialled-in. You saw that with the preparations for this tournament - I've never known an England camp this well orchestrated. The FA will not want to f*** with this and gamble on an independent thinker coming in and potentially undoing the good work that has got us here.

My guess is they roll with Gareth for anoher two+-years and, in that time, prepare the ground for Howe and his team to come in in 2025.

Yep, I reckon this is the most likely scenario.

One more point to add, the media attitude toward the Manager and team has shifted in the past few years and most hacks are now much less likely to go full bore on individuals. In fact, the opposite is true where the media actually show a good amount of respect for everyone involved.

Gareth's comment last night about reviewing the situation is likely a pause to check reactions before committing either way. Once he sees that the respect he has earned is still, bar the moronic drones in the ether, intact, he will help plan for the cycle to end in the right way (see my previous post).

The last thing I want to see is a cranky lanky German on the touchline of our national team. It'd be a f***ing shitshow.

Should he go or stay?

It's really the choice deciding between has Gareth improved the players he's selected or has he held back a crop of talented players he's been lucky to work with?

I think his tactical ideas are naive and rather simple. Yesterday he completely changed the set up of the team to try and contain one player, which resulted in England ceding the first half to France. Too late he tried to wrest power back later in the game, but that resulted in only flashes of parity, rather than the popularly imagined idea that England were the better team.

Personally I'm undecided on a departure simply because you can't trust the English FA to hire a better manager.

I thought the syetm worked in the main and choked the French in key areas. The obvious problem, and one almost all managers would have struggled with, is how then do you build from that in transition. And, the French were at it too with their attention to Foden and Saka.

The likely scenario played out (the fine margins) where individual moments decide the whole.

If Tuchel wants the job then it's a complete no brainer. Great tactician & excellent tournament manager.
I think his football would suit our attacking players too.

It won’t happen as it would actually make me look forward to the next tournament but it would be a quality appointment.

I didn't know he'd managed tournaments(?).
Also, no thought given to his character?

The vast majority of top level managers are dickheads.

If your waiting for someone who can finally win something as well as being good as gold you’ll be waiting a while.

Who said anything about them needing to be good as gold? Not even implied.

Personally I think go; he's had a good run and to his credit has taken us further than any manager in half a century, but it's time for some fresh ideas.

Although I will say there are arguments for him staying, and changing the manager doesn't necessarily mean you end up with better.

Personally I think his idea to nullify the threat of Mbappe resulted in our right side being completely impotent and, making Henderson run about like a headless chicken, weakened the midfield giving Greizmann the freedom to ping balls about all over the pitch.

We stopped Mbappe, but gave Dembele freedom. It tightened up in the second half, but that was really too late. Mbappe gave Walker a run in the second half, which anchored Walker again, stopping his forward runs on that side. The other wingback showed just how useful that tactic can be.

I think Tuchel is not a great fit at all, he did OK with Mainz but has crafted a good route upwards in my opinion career wise by being in the right place at the right time. He spent a relatively fortune at Dortmund and won a cup which somehow was enough to get the psg gig where he won trophies in a one horse race (I'm sure one of his first signings was Mbappe for £180m) and cleaned up as expected. This then earned him a crack at Chelsea where he did OK at but who were already in the knock out stages of the champions league by the time he was appointed.

I'm not saying he isn't a good coach but he lacks longevity and is too abrasive. I don't think Southgate needs to go so if he did stay then as has been mentioned I think in 18 months Howe or Potter will be more fitting replacements.
