I didn't know he'd managed tournaments(?).
Also, no thought given to his character?
He reached 4 finals in just over a year at Chelsea.

He is an excellent knockout tournament manager & is one of few managers that can genuinely control games from the sideline which for me is what England hugely lack in the big games.

Would be mad to turn your nose up at a manager of his calibre in my opinion, however valid the critisms of his lack of longevity may be, but this squad doesn't need a long term project now in my opinion - it's needs a manager to get them over the line.

Personally I think his idea to nullify the threat of Mbappe resulted in our right side being completely impotent and, making Henderson run about like a headless chicken, weakened the midfield giving Greizmann the freedom to ping balls about all over the pitch.

We stopped Mbappe, but gave Dembele freedom. It tightened up in the second half, but that was really too late. Mbappe gave Walker a run in the second half, which anchored Walker again, stopping his forward runs on that side. The other wingback showed just how useful that tactic can be.
Goals change matches they say.
When we scored it worked against us as the French upped their tempo, pressed higher up the pitch and forced their 2nd goal.
It was a decent effort by England, but ultimately we were second best in most areas of the pitch.
I thought we were at least going to go the distance with no yellow cards - but bone head Maguire changed that.
If changes are to made, then we have to find better than Shaw, Maguire and Henderson.
The latter 2 looked cumbersome, while Shaw got rinsed so many times by Dembele, he looked to have shrunk in the wash.
Pickford is still a decent keeper, despite not getting to France's first goal.
Walker and Stones are decent.
Bellingham looked good too - and will get better.
Saka ditto.
Kane... not sure if he will be the man in 18 months time.
Southgate?
I hope he stays on because if he doesn't there will be speculation about Steve Cooper.
And for me it is Club first... I have no country.

Talk of Pochettino and Tuchel just feels like hot air from the press to me. Expect them to take a club job in the Premier League or in a top European League.

As for Howe, that ship has long since set sail. Particularly if Newcastle start qualifying for Europe regularly and/or winning silverware.

Potter may be a slim possibility in a few years if things go horribly wrong at Chelsea. If he turns it around, it'll be a no-goer like Howe though.

Let's not kid ourselves, it'll be an out of work manager who can't get a decent top flight job or another appointment from within the current England set up.

Chris Hughton and the FA like this post.

Really really like it.

An awful lot.

Really really really like this post.

I can't work out whether the support for Southgate from the ex-pro media types stems from his record or their time playing with him?

For me he never should have got the job but has performed at a better level in it than I expected, albeit in a never going to win anything with him in charge type way.

His mates who he played with aren’t exactly going to start burying him in the press are they.

I remain convinced that the key to success with England is for the players to still play in the Premier League way - we always look best when we play at pace not when we switch to the "slow it down" approach that Southgate persists in doing, especially against the best teams. Same as against Italy in the Euro's we went ahead and the order when out slow it down, don't risk anything, build up slow.... we look completely lost when we do that and its no surprise as they just don't play that way often enough to eb able to do it at international level against good sides.

To me one of the key mistakes against France was our most potent striker was very often the one who'd dropped back and was delivering balls in, but to who exactly? It doesn't look like we practice how to break teams down in that slow build up style which has allowed the opposition to pack the defence and so when we adopt it in the game we look lost, bereft of imagination and generally to be banking on the "someone do something then" school of management. But that requires players who are on the same wavelength and know generally where their teammates are and what ball in they're looking for ((a la the ball in to Giroud) ). It doesn't look to me like we practice that kind of football as an International side so when we play the really good sides who have nous as well as skill we fail to find a way through. And we never seem to learn...

At club level, Kane has Son alongside him to lead the line when the England man wants to drop in as a No.10; England don‘t really play like that, so Kane was perhaps playing his „club“ game, but without the orthodox strike partner?

Currently at 16/1 along with Slippy G and Fat Fwank.
I am a bit surprised Brendan Rodgers isn‘t in the conversation, with those last pair.

Absolutely - but that's kind of the point isn't it ... if he's the number one striker then play him with a Son like player. I'd suggest Foden could be that, but he was directed to stay out more on the wing (again not what he does for Man City) but wasn't used in that way against France and we remained too defensive so when Kane dropped back as he does in search of the ball Henderson and Bellingham (who had both played higher up the pitch allowing Henderson to score and Bellingham to pounce on a mistake by Senegal and set up Kane) didn't come forward as much. Against Senegal you had Rice, Bellingham and Henderson being much more mobile and progressive in the way they broke up play and then got forward quickly, Rice in particular is great at breaking up play and getting forward with Henderson dropping back, and while I acknowledge that Senegal aren't France but we barely tried which again meant we were neutering ourselves, curbing our natural instincts and being less effective, hence our best chances came from penalty shouts not open play.
