Ukraine are a decent team these days. I'm such a fan of Tsyhankov, who I still think is a better all round winger than Mudryk. This was Sergii Rebrov's first game in charge of Ukraine so it looks like positive signs for them. Rebrov has got a very good managerial record up to now so he may be able to push Ukraine on further than his ex-strike partner, Sheva.

Highlights below, in case anyone's interested.

I was really impressed with the Ukrainians, they look a tidy team, pressing well, good in possession, and a real threat in front of goal.

I remember the atlas I was given when starting at the BFES school in Altona. Marion de Jong used it before me and I always see her as a beautiful and mysterious figure who worked for the Dutch underground against the German machine.

So I used it in my British way, planning bomber attacks over Germany. I still have the atlas and the plots of those routes to the targets in Germany.

I never did get down as far as Stuttgart so have no idea how to get there.

Germany‘s schedule of friendly matches before Euro 2024, to allow Hans-Dieter Flick to hone his squad, is, well, not going well again:

The Samurai Blue, featuring VfB‘s Hiroki Ito in defence and former VfB-er Wataru Endo, absolutely battered Germany.

Massive questions for Herr Flick at the moment.

Germany have won only four of their last 17 international matches.

And on Tuesday, at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, they’re playing France, again in a friendly.

The vultures are beginning to circle, and another defeat - given the two sides‘ form, that is quite possible - might even see the DFB consider a change in coaches, with Hans-Dieter Flick under severe pressure.

How do they go from the blueprint (Die Blaupause?) a decade ago to where they are now?

What’s happened? Is it a lack of talent coming through? Everyone else has adopted their model and had got better? Why the monumental drop off?

Mainly, because Germany haven’t had a proper centre-forward since my old mate Mario Gomez.

And without that attacking focal point, the whole side struggles. There are players there, the team is strong in the midfield and has an excellent choice of goalkeepers, but woeful and wasteful up front.

Oh wow.

Hans-Dieter Flick sensationally sacked as Germany Head Coach, following the 4-1 thrashing by Japan.

The Samurai Blue were excellent value for their win, and it marked the inglorious end to the Flick-era.

No early contender stands out, but as the Euros are in a mere 9 months, I wonder if the DFB fancy a punt on the currently free Julian Nagelsmann?

I'm not going to get anywhere near as much mileage out of Nagelsmann as I did Herr Flick

DFB announces Rudi Völler, Sandro Wagner and Hannes Wolf will be on the bench running the side for Tuesday‘s friendly with France.

Bad pick for them considering Gary Megson was available

We rag on Southgate, but that sounds a proper shambles.

Yep, hence the „sensational“ bIt. The position of Bundestrainer is of such authority, the DFB just doesn‘t boot the incumbent out. It’s unheard of.

Does Rudi still spit at people if he gets arsey?
??

Other way round old cucumber - it was The Netherlands‘ Frank Rijkaard who spat at Rudi Völler!

God, my memory is doing RV a dis service there.

I remember watching that game live in 1990. Full of "characters", bad tempered and then that incident. Not quite sure what VAR would have made of it all.

My message to you Rudi... is sorry.

The Nationalelf currently struggle to defend as a unit, and they can‘t score goals.

And this is despite the recent about-face to bring back the formerly exiled Thomas Müller of FC Bayern, as since prematurely binning him off, they had completely failed to find anyone else to adequately play the „Thomas Müller“ role for the side.

And they have still the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Niklas Süle, Antonio Rüdiger, Emre Can, Ilkay Gundogan, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Kai Havertz to call upon. If you can‘t make at least a competitive side out of that lot, there‘s no hope.

Of course, the spectre of next summer‘s Euros looms large, having been dumped out at the Group Stages in the last two major international tournaments, a third consecutive exit - especially as tournament hosts - would be intolerable.
