Ethan Shea Horvath

Quarantine the Pass

First Team Squad
Re: Ethan Shea Hovarth

Having barely played for a couple of years in Belgium I'd expect he's been told he's challenging for the starting position. He'd be a bit daft to sign otherwise. Either way, he's looked decent when I've seen him.

Reckon he will start the season as number one.

I don't think he will coz CH really likes Brice Samba as a Keeper but he won't close his mind to the possibility of it and will wait to see how good he is in training and Pre Season games. What this signing will do though is pressure Brice to cut out those odd errors he makes.

I think Samba is excellent Keeper and there is no way that I would be starting anyone ahead of him in goal.

Let's remind ourselves - basically anyone who doesn't think there's a chance this guy would displace Samba - that when we signed Samba a lot of people presumably thought we didn't need to. We still had Smith and Pantilimon who had plenty of first team experience and had also signed Steele and Muric since bringing them in, that includes 2 international keepers, one very highly rated from a top club on loan, and 2 with plenty of matches at this level.

But we signed him, he became our first choice, Muric didn't really do much other than make mistakes, Steele and Pantilimon left, and Smith stayed but didn't really progress much.

Ideally you do need a keeper who is going to push your first choice just so they have someone who they know is capable in case they lose form, If Samba was dropped last season we'd be playing Smith, leaking goals left right and centre, and most of the fans would be wanting Samba back in the team, this wouldn't happen with decent backup.

Also, there is a not insignificant possibility that another club is in for Samba and is offering big money which we probably need and can't turn down so he could be the replacement.

You'd never say that we should turn down a good player - and the US have a good record with keepers - Keller, Friedel, Howard, Hahnemann etc etc

Hadn't heard a single rumour that this was happening either which is heartening, could be more signings in the pipeline we know nothing about.

and this guy was linked to the likes of fulham and tottenham prior to his signing. suddenly bam,he signed for forest. Will at least keep samba on his toes and hopefully eliminate samba obligatory blip in form.

Free transfer and I doubt the wages will be massive considering where we have signed him from. I have backed Smith in the past as a capable number two, but in all honesty he really isn't good enough. Don't know much about this lad but hopefully he can push Samba and they can get the most out of eachother.

Very much this. Smith always passes the eye test, for me, in that he never seems to have a howler - but ever since that lengthy spell when he was first choice, his sporadic appearances seem to have coincide with us shipping more goals than usual.
At this stage of his career, he also need to be at least in contention to be number 1 somewhere and getting a run of games - so probably best for both sides to move on.

On the Yankee Doodle Keeper - I wouldn't jump to conclusions that we're selling or dropping Samba - I'm with those who think it's competition and planning for the future.

It says on Wikipedia that Solksjaer signed him on his first professional contract. Interesting.

Given our mental transfer window last summer, I'd be more in shock if we weren't in the shit financially. Even with recent departures, our wage bill must be horrific. And that's before we consider the impact of COVID on finances.

Horvath feels more like a Samba replacement than someone happy to come here on low wages to be back up, IMO.

I'll plead the 5th on club £££ but I'd agree re Hoverth and Samba, but they are both still quite young for keepers and no reason why Samba should expect to be top dog, Perhaps we can get some good cash for him though?

Not sure why we would want to sell Samba at all. Surely the club will want 2 good keepers at the club. It only takes an injury to set you back massively. It doesn't make sense to sell Samba especially when this lad was on a free.

Smudge has been a good servant, but I'm a little apprehensive at the thought of a 'keeper who is seemingly content - happy even - to remain a permanent number 2.

It would represent good business if this guy was free and as good as Samba if not better and we could get a few million for Samba from a lower PL club... Not saying we should, but it might fund more incoming players.

Feels a lot like robbing Peter to pay Paul. I'd rather have 2 good goalkeepers. One of them is likely to get injured or dip in form. The only caveat I'd add is unless that price is substantial millions. I'm talking £8M upwards

Agree with this, he never seems to have a howler, but we seem to ship goals whenever he comes in for a stint between the sticks.

And like yourself and Otis have pointed out, Smith as at an age now where he should be playing first team football and not be content with sitting on the bench as a career backup.

Goalkeepers do need fellow GKs to train with & push each other otherwise training can be boring and you get complacent. Club now has 10 GKs. With Shelvey on loan it is 3 for each group.

Last season I think we only had 7 from U18s up. 5 when Wright/Shelvey were away on loan.

First-team
Brice Samba
Ethan Horvath
Jordan Smith

U23s
George Shelvey (loan)
Nicky Hogarth
Jordan Wright
Joe Watkins

U18s
Alex Akers
Aaron Bott
Kane Draper

Think the motive behind this signing has been missed by everyone.

Moneys tight & Samba has the best diagonal at the club. I suspect Bryce may well be our next defensive midfielder.

Re: Ethan Shea Hovarth

Is he America's number one? I do love a tall keeper as well.

Technically Zach Steffan (Manchester City) is considered our #1; but Horvath will continue to push him, Steffan's form for the USA has been mediocre, IMO. As noted, the USA produces quality keepers. As an American, I love having another USA player on Forest - dare I dream we can sign Daryl Dike....

He is definitely here as a number 2 to start with, I am not sure why people think otherwise? Any fee we get for Samba won't replace his quality & the amount of points he would win us.

Here is genuine competition for Samba. We know Samba is quality above this level but he can switch off - even if it's competition to keep his levels high in training it is worth it's wages. Best case scenario he turs out better than Samba and takes his place.

I hadn't really heard of him prior to today but based on watching videos he is very controlled in his goalkeeping. It looks like a lot of clubs have watched him for a long time.

It reminds me of De Vries / Darlow, you knew Darlow would eventually leave but you had a backup that could potentially turn out to be better. He is still only young for a GK.

Dike would be the dream. Just ideal in every department, but we know we would have to sell Worrall to afford him.

You gotta trust the new recruitment guys as they are the ones that found him for Barnsley in the first place.

They want about 15m+ for Dike last I saw.

Wouldn't mind us going for Matthew Hoppe if we want a USA striker but think he will be off to a Prem team.
