Dwight Gayle

I think this is the Carvalho argument all over again. Only this time he probably is a player who can make a difference straight away. The only problem is we need to spend in other areas equally as much, if not more so.

Apart from Carvalho is only 22 still and isn't on anything close to £50k a week.

I agree with all your points but what I’m saying is, hypothetically, what if there is an agreement to sell one of those best players if we don’t get to the prem this coming summer? Does that change your thinking?

I also don’t think we get much better value for £20m than Gayle, who can play on the wing or as a 10 as well as up front, without trying to prise a player out of a club that doesn’t want to sell to us.

I’m also not convinced Gayle will have no resale value. I’d expect him to be bagging 20+ in the champ for the next 3-5 years

An agreement to sell one of our better players in the summer doesn't change my thinking, no. Gayle's wages are massive and he will cost this club an absolute fortune over the duration of his contract. It would significantly affect our maneuverability in the transfer market in the years to come.

I also don't see the logic in spending £20m on a striker only to play him out wide or as a number 10, it would make far more sense to sign an actual winger or number 10 to play those positions. If we are spending that kind of player, they should be playing in their best position in every game they play and be in the starting XI every week when fit (which means dropping Grabban).

If we signed Gayle, we would never be able to get the money back that we paid for him, nor would anyone be willing to match his wages. We would be stuck with him until his contract expires, pretty much.

Are you gonna tell me that:

In the current transfer market
In this division, with no clear quality operator outside Leeds and WBA (and maybe Brentford)
With our lack of goal scoring threat outside of Grabban
With promotion a very real prospect

That Dwight Gayle ISNT worth £20m to us? Don’t be naive.

Naivety seems to be on your part here. £20m is about £10mil overpriced.

We'd only know if he is worth £20m to us if he fired us to promotion. And even then he's showed he's useless in the Prem.

If he didn't lead us to the promised land it could lead to financial ruin.

I would put a £20m bet that he would do that. That’s kind of the point, isn’t it?

That's got to be a joke shirley,
20m for a 31 year old striker who can't get a game in the prem.

I think this is a really good debate, with some well made points on both sides by some top posters.

But I am disappointed that no one has told you not to call them Shirley so far.

We wouldn't get us promoted on his own though, would he? He didn't guarantee a much better West Brom side promotion last season.

We don't (and with our current squad, can't) play 2 upfront. Our midfield would still be shit, and Lolley would still be our only decent winger. Gayle would do very little in terms of improving our starting XI.

Creating chances is our main problem, not scoring them. Gayle would do little to change that.

I'll not forgive him for that bloody dive last season.
Cheating little scrote.
I'll diss him on here if he does join us.
£20m?
I wouldn't give 20 pence for a diving cheating premiership failure.

Exactly this...

20 million is chump change if he scores the play off winner

Good, that means the end of the Post's daily click bait articles about Dwight Gayle and everyone on social media banging on about him every 5 minutes.

Agree, if you had to find a photo for a cheating little scrote, his face would be top of the list.
If we’re going to pay anywhere near £20m let’s hope it’s not to Mike Ashley.
Would much rather go for Ollie Watkins at that money and he’s 3 times the player that Gayle is!
