Dwight Gayle

Would rather spend the money on him than Rhodes. Gayle would allow more flexibility in style as he has more pace to run through the middle. Rhodes would need supply from the wings and for all our attacks to go through him. Gayle is more like Tyson but with an end product.

Ashley's well used to selling overpriced tat to fools willing to hand over hard-earned cash. Let's shop elsewhere.

Must admit, whilst overpriced, Gayle is quality operator at this level. I’d be over the moon to get him, even if it was for £20m

That would be a massive gamble though, but one that would pay off if it resulted in promotion. Failure to achieve promotion would likely screw us financially however.

Depends, doesn’t it. If we have a player sale lined up in the summer if promotion doesn’t happen - maybe Worrall? - then the bet is pretty well hedged.

If Gayle is the difference between promotion and not (and all the riches that come with that) then we’d be stupid not to make the gamble.

The biggest problem with Gayle is he doesn’t give much of a defensive contribution, so if we played him on the wing as an inside forward we’d get exposed. That being said, he’s rapid and can run for weeks so he’s a constant counter attacking threat so suits our low block.

20m For a 29 year old striker too

We displayed monumental gullibility last year with Benfica. Clubs are going to take the piss.

Are you gonna tell me that:

In the current transfer market
In this division, with no clear quality operator outside Leeds and WBA (and maybe Brentford)
With our lack of goal scoring threat outside of Grabban
With promotion a very real prospect

That Dwight Gayle ISNT worth £20m to us? Don’t be naive.

That's got to be a joke shirley,
20m for a 31 year old striker who can't get a game in the prem.

If he guaranteed promotion this season he'd be worth it, if I'm WBA or Fulham with a shit load of parachute money I'd pay it but for us it's too much of a gamble especially if he wants £50k a week as well, we'd basically have the rest of this season and next to get promoted before FFP rinsed us for it.

Still wouldn't touch him at £15m, £10-12m would be worth thinking about but I wouldn't be giving him £50k a week either.

Just a lot of money for a player that age, when we also need funds for midfield creativity too.

Like you I'd be happy to see him here though. I just think that's overpriced considering his age.

I don’t disagree that it’s overpriced based on other circumstances, but in our circumstances (and those of Wednesday, Millwall, Hull etc) I think it is justified to put that tag on.

Clearly we will negotiate that price, but I can absolutely see the rationale.

I'm wary because our history at seeing the bigger picture is shit. Carvalho 13m, winger to compliment that in any of the 2 following windows? No.

It's another potential "eggs in one basket" scenario.

Inversely, I think if you put Gayle on the pitch you will see much more from Carvalho (if we can get around my previous point about how to get Watson and Carvalho in their natural roles in the same team without losing defensive solidity) because he’ll have 2 or 3 intelligent runners around him to play in to.

*can't believe there's folk out there who would be happy if we spent £20m on Dwight bloody Gayle.*

We only play 1 upfront and don't have the players to play 2 upfront, and if we signed him we wouldn't be able to address our weaknesses out wide and in midfield.*

Gayle alone wouldn't get us promoted. Spending £20m (plus his massive wages) would guarantee a transfer embargo and points deduction, and see us having to sell the likes of Cash and Worrall to balance the books

Sign Murray either on loan or for 18 months and loan Nketiah or recall Walker and that's Grabban sufficiently covered and striker options more varied for fairly cheap.

If we're gonna drop anything close to £20m on a player it should be on somebody like Bowen or Watkins. They go into the starting XI down the weak wing and our front 3 looks instantly better. Both significantly younger than Gayle with resale value and signing them weakens a direct opponent this season.

My point is we don’t know if there’s an agreement somewhere with one of our high value players that if we don’t go up they’re free to leave for the right price.

That changes things significantly

It'd still be sacrificing one of our best players for a player who doesn't really improve our starting XI all that much and has zero resale value, plus would leave us with a £50k per week millstone around our necks for 3 or 4 years with regards to FFP.

As far as strikers are concerned, we only need someone who is decent enough back up for Grabban and can be used as an option off the bench. There's no need to gamble the clubs future on a player like Gayle when there are cheaper options that would do a good enough job.

Even if we were going to spend £20m (we won't), it would be much better spent on adding quality out wide and in midfield; positions that would actually significantly strengthen the starting XI.

I agree with all your points but what I’m saying is, hypothetically, what if there is an agreement to sell one of those best players if we don’t get to the prem this coming summer? Does that change your thinking?

I also don’t think we get much better value for £20m than Gayle, who can play on the wing or as a 10 as well as up front, without trying to prise a player out of a club that doesn’t want to sell to us.

I’m also not convinced Gayle will have no resale value. I’d expect him to be bagging 20+ in the champ for the next 3-5 years
