Richard Keogh has been told to take a pay-cut, or potentially face the*sack, according to John Percy of the Telegraph.

Fair offer. He stays he can only help mentor younger players. He leaves then we don’t pay him. Simple and a good offer from the club which shows there has been forgiveness towards him.

Would love to know how we could sack him and not the other two*considering he wasn't even driving. I'm sure his lawyer would eat that one up. Or, y'know, shoddy journalism.

So the 2 main culprits have been given a fine and are already back in the team and playing like nothing happened, but the passenger who's already suffered the most is now being threatened with being sacked? Sure he's the captain and should know better, but if you're exploring the possibility of sacking him then you should have probably done that with the other 2 as well.

A morale stance based on FFP and book value. Disgusting. This club is a mess.

Think the club are well within their rights here. Presumably the insurance doesn't cover the player (wages) in this case given the circumstances.

I think the sacking rumour will be nonsense - I can't imagine anyone at the club leaking this information but I can imagine his agent doing it to generate sympathy for the player - In which case you throw in "yeh, the club threatened to sack him" it makes a story sympathetic - Whether the club have done that or not.

He should go sue his 'mates' who left him for 45 mins.

I might be in the minority, but it doesn't sit right with me that 3 people were involved in the incident and 1 of them (the 1 who didn't actually commit a crime) is facing the sack whilst the others aren't. Sure the other 2 can play and still contribute, but that shouldn't exempt them from the same punishment as Keogh.

He was the club captain and should

A) Have*made sure the players did not get into that state.
B) He was the one not wearing a seat belt, which must have had some bearing on the injuries he sustained.
C ) Wasnt it him that tried to give the police a false name?

I thought C was made up by Forest fans?

Everyone can keep banging on about the club doing what's best for itself because Bennett and Lawrence can still contribute and have resale value etc. but to me it's just another morally wrong decision by a football club who've been in the press for all sorts of morally wrong reasons over the past few years.

There's no moral issue here.

Oh there absolutely is a moral issue here. 4*people*were involved in the incident. 2 people were driving their cars whilst drunk and 2 people were passengers. The 1 individual who has already suffered the most from the incident via his injuries, is now also suffering the most severe punishment of the 4. How on earth is that not a moral issue?

He chose to get into the car. He chose to not wear a seatbelt. He's come away from the incident unable to earn the wages he's given; and done so in a situation where insurance will not help his employers cover the cost. He's now literally a waste of money for 80% of his remaining contract.
Handing out the punishments to Lawrence and Bennett that we have and sacking Keogh on the spot would have been a perfectly balanced decision. Offering him a pay cut instead and continuing his employment IS taking into account the personal suffering he's already incurred.

It shouldn’t be a tough decision for Richard, unless he is in severe debt and can’t afford to do it. I can see him taking the pay cut, he loves the club.

As for the press stuff, the stadium sale and Rooney signing come to mind. Sure they're both legal and haven't gone against any rules (unless the EFL change their mind), but even the most biased Derby fans can surely see selling a stadium to yourself to avoid FFP punishment and having a betting company heavily involved in a player's arrival isn't a great look.

Get injured by your colleague driving pissed = take big wage reduction or get sacked.

Drive pissed and injure your colleague = slap on the wrist then*crack on as normal.

Yes, but the other two are able to play and earn their wages now.

Debatable one of them has ever been able to play.

According to The Guardian, he’s now been sacked.

Is it only me who feels really sad about this? I know he shouldn’t have got drunk, got in the car etc, but what an awful way for his time at Derby to end.

What a mess of a club we far too often are.

One down, two to go.*Good riddance.
Only way to deal this*poo, hopefully Bennett and Lawrence are gone in January.

This is shameful. Kick out Lawrence and Bennett too.

"The club will not tolerate any of its players or staff behaving in a manner which puts themselves, their colleagues, and members of the general public at risk of injury or worse, or which brings the club into disrepute."

How are the other two still playing then?

It makes a mockery of the fact that we’ve welcomed Lawrence and Bennett back into the fold, despite them being the only ones who put “themselves, their colleagues and members of the general public at risk of injury or worse”.

Unless we can make some money from them, in which case they'll get a slap on the wrist.

Still can't believe we let 2 drink drivers that caused life-changing injuries to a passenger who they left without treatment for 45 mins, just walk straight back into the team. People now talking about leadership. There isn't any at this club.

At least we finding out what the Derby way is now: break the law, flee the scene of a crime, leaving your teammate injured as the result of your actions and you get a six week fine. Get in the car, and get a career threatening injury as the result of it, and you get sacked.

Once again the club shows it is driven only by money, otherwise there would have been consistency and the punishments would have been the same.

There must be more to it than what we know.

The offer of a reduced wage prior to the sacking seriously undermines the Club’s legal position and case with this...

Absolute silence from the club as it breaks across all media platforms. The*media team at Derby always seem to be totally inept and 4 steps behind. Another embarrassment for our club.

Good, as Captain he should have taken Lawrence and Bennett's keys off them, sad way to end what could have been a Rams legend

You're joking aren't you. Taking the keys off a drunk. He's likely to have got a punch in the mouth - and he couldn't risk his good looks.

Embarrassing. Morals completely out the window for a bit of cash. If Keogh could still play he'd*be*in the starting 11 and we'd have offered 'support' to him just like*the other two. Should have got rid of the lot or none at all.*Really poor from the club.

This is the correct punishment ,the others got off too lightly.

Cowardly act. Same punishment should have been meted out to the other 2 players but wasnt as they have an intrinsic book value worth to the club whilst an injured player who is not likely to play again for the club does not. Very cynical act.

One more point I’ll make, I think it’s an absolute disgrace the club haven’t officially announced this through their channels yet. Can’t be letting something like this break in the media first, very very very poor show.

They have done, on RamsTV,* but its buffering that much Brentfords 3rd goal has only just gone in.

Do not see how it is fair and consistent to retain two employees who broke the law and now have a criminal record but terminate the other (who was obviously morally wrong and let down the club in his role) who did not.

Reading some of these replies is hilarious. Most of you all would cry for a refund for your £30 away ticket if we performed badly, but expect Mel Morris to fork out £2m to a guy who effectively stuck his middle finger up at every single one of you by:
1 - Getting himself involved in such activities as club captain.
2 - Wanting to leach your money sat in the physio room.
This guy is an absolute clown. Good riddance to him! duck off and don't ever come back.

What happened with the outcome of the scuffle with the Forest grounds man?

Morally reprehensible and legally dubious as by rights other employees who carried out similar if not worse acts of gross misconduct were not dealt with in the same manner.

About time we found new, competent owners.*

Who have Over 1 million pounds a month to spend supporting the losses we make,*regardless of other investment that has been pumped into the club.*What planet do you live on and can you work an abacus?

Trying to defend*this decision*reeks of tribalistic politics tbh. It's like Liverpool fans defending Suarez for his racism or biting opponents simply because he was THEIR player at the time. Forget the club for a second in your thinking, imagine it was another clubs players, Forest's even, and the whole thing looks a hell of a lot different ...*from the perspective of what's morally*right/fair/just this is absolute bullcrap, and Lawrence/Bennett should be sacked too if Keogh has been shown the door.

Ridiculous decision to sack Keogh. They could have sold him to Derby and got some of their money back.

Going to brilliant on Saturday when Gibson realises Mel’s sacked Keogh and had him valued at 15 million for FFP purposes.

Well....where to begin? The club starts by saying that the players will be supported and helped back into the team; picks lawrence and bennett at the first opportunity; We draft a statement for lawrence which refers to his 'indiscretion',*and then we sack*keogh claiming that we*will not tolerate blah blah blah blah i can't even be bothered to type the bs. This is purely about money. I predicted we would attempt to pay off*keogh. we now pretend that his gross misconduct was such *that we have no option but to*terminate his contract. Altho had he agreed to a wage reduction we wouldn't have terminated his contract. So terminating his contract is not related to the incident but to his failure to consent to a reduction in pay. And the main culprits get a punishment which pales in comparison.*I think that even if keogh wins at an employment tribunal the max damages are something like £80k.
We really are a shower of sht.

What will we have to show for the legacy of the last 6 years? A catalogue of managerial sackings; a*huge debt; we*lost the ownership of our own*stadium; and we capped it off by*sacking our own captain.

(Harry Arter tweet): So the one left unconscious in the car and not arrested gets sacked?

(Jeff Hendrick response): Agree. Talk about kicking a man (the captain) while he is down instead of helping him trough this physically and mentally tough time.

If anyone is an expert on kicking a man while he’s down it’s Jeff Hendrick (allegedly).

Thank god for that. Wont have to watch the donkey ever again. Best result weve had all season

Love to see your list of better CB's in the Championship over the last 5 or 6 years.

Havent got enough time bud. I'll be dead in 30 years.

Perhaps you could just share a few then in your short time on this earth.

Mings, Boly, Cooper, Davies, Elphick, Klose, Zimmerman, Connelly, Hause, Cook, Dunk, Duff, Keane, Mee, Tarkowski, Kalas, Reem, Lascelles, Mbenba and on and on. Ariston. There's hundreds of em.

John Stones and Joe Gomez.

Keogh's wife has just changed her relationship status to "wife of a professional scapegoat".

It’s amazing how many people are suddenly claiming that this is the right thing to do blah blah blah. When it happened I posted that all three should be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, and that the culprits should*be sacked if the judgement went a certain way.*there were plenty prepared to take issue with me and not a single poster argued that Keogh should be sacked. *Not one. The club had apparently handled it all very correctly etc etc.*.*Now all of a sudden the little worms have turned.

The worst culprit in the whole affair was Lawrence. Pissed. Drove. Smashed into Bennett. Injured a passenger. Abandoned the scene. But he committed an ‘indiscretion’. Total hypocrisy.

Still, takes our minds off Brexit..

Personally I am happy that I*will never have to listen to another Keogh post-match interview.

What was this comment about?

’heard Keogh told Bennett to rush home and return with a wheelbarrow (so they could wheel Keogh away) and Lawrence to run to the nearby petrol station to pick up a few bottles of beer. When Bennett arrived back at his house he realized he didn't own a wheelbarrow, so gave Lawrence a call to see if he had one. The petrol station shop was also closed so Lawrence couldn't buy the beers either. They both returned to the crash site empty handed much to the frustration of Keogh.l’

To be fair, many of those comments are right. The club has only taken a sterner view with Keogh because his career is ended. They should have taken an equally strong stance with the other two (arguably who committed a worse offence).

There was also a school of thought that justified the decision on the grounds that:

Keogh injured himself through his own actions, the others are available for selection so tough shit basically. But then it became a tedious legal debate over what constitutes gross misconduct.

It was though fascinating to find out that around 50% of Derby Fans held legal qualifications.

I would like to think, but sincerely doubt it, that comments from Forest fans in similar circumstances would be as honest and as well balanced.

My son, who is a lawyer, has said to me that he believes that Derby County’s actions are sustainable and defensible.

Mind you, as a Forest fan, I noted that he was speaking through gritted teeth, and giving this opinion was causing him some discomfort. It wasn’t even mitigated by the fact that the victim was Keogh.

More intelligent than to get in the back seat with a drunk driver!

I don't think it's wrong that they sacked him. He got into a car with a drunk driver, not someone who was half a pint over the limit, but totally bladdered. As a consequence, he now cannot provide his employer with any service for the remaining length of his contract. If any Forest player did the same, I'd want our club to tell them to f*** off. As for the other two drivers, they can consider themselves very fortunate that they didn't permanently injure themselves or worse, and that the club considers themselves to be sufficient of an asset to retain them on the payroll. Keogh might consider himself hard done by, but he is where he is because of his own decisions, and I congratulate Derby on their action.

Yes I don't think there is any issue with the dismissal of Keough, where the it becomes muddied and discriminatory or more likely constructive dismissal is by not sacking the other two players with him.

They've dropped a massive bollock in that respect.

The club should have made a statement & f**ked em all off. Keough being discarded purely on the premise he's of no use anymore, while the other more culpable pair crack on as if nowts happened sends out a pretty f**ked up message for me.

The key here is he is the club captain and a generation older than the other players involved. He should have made it clear they would be leaving their cars and grabbing cabs...but to then get in to a car with a drunk at the wheel and not wear a seat belt, further endangering lives, adds another layer of twat to his rather rancid CV.

Do I also get the sense of other indisplines?

Surely the muddied part is not the relevance of the other two (which of course is bad enough), but by the fact he was only sacked after refusing a cut in wages?

The other two are very relevent because they have failed to treat other guilty parties with the same level of discipline.

Allegedly is the key word to save my post.....

Obviously rumours have been heard, but where I heard it from isn't known for making stuff up. Either way, still is wrong that they sacked him; as funny as it is for a forest fan!

Yes I do understand that, but what I mean is that the fact they were seemingly happy to keep him if he took a pay cut, would then have to seriously question their excuse of misconduct.

At that point, if he was sacked because of misconduct, then other two come into play then.
