Brennan Price Johnson

I've seen Wales play Johnson as a false 9 and he's been anonymous. But still a threat with a through ball.

He reminds me of Michael Owen in some ways. Hardly in the game at all, but if you thread a perfect ball to him, he's deadly.

He's that type of player. Explosive on the counter. But he has more of a creative mind than Owen did. He still wants to set up others.

Just need to play to his strengths. He's going to be a top player. 2 goals already this season and we've not been at our best.
Great finish against West Ham too. People rightly laid surridge for his finishing but Johnson is just as good.

I must be watching different matches to some of you lot. So far I think he's adapted well enough, he's getting the ball, he's beating his opponent fairly frequently (PL defenders will always be harder to completely strip like he did in the CH and doesn't have Spence's raw pace alongside him either, as well as being a bit more central) has 2 goals and generally looks as threatening as anyone else we have.

He'd be much better doing it out wide and having someone like Dennis or Awoyini getting into the danger area for a cross tbh

Agree.

Your definitely watching a different game to me.

Nice finish & a couple of rare cameos on the ball, but for the large part, he's out the game & looking way off. Gibbs White & Lingard at least look on a similar wave length, if a striker comes in then Johnson should make way.

No player should expect to stat every game anyway. The Premier League definitely requires a squad approach. It must be time for Johnno to miss out, it's not like he's contributing massively to our build up, in fact he does go missing for large parts. Some games will suit him more than others, that's Coops' challenge, who to play and when to play them and in what fashion to play?

Always a tough call for players like this. Every now and again they'll be absolutely unplayable and give the opposition a torrid time from start to finish. Those performances only happen a few times a season though. The rest of the time they are largely anonymous but you know they are also match winners on any given day.

I don't think benching him is a big problem, being able to deploy him late on might be the most effective way to use him in the short term

I know he's a potential threat whenever he's on the pitch but I think he'll be an even bigger threat being bought on fresh with 30 minutes to go against tiring defenders

It could be argued that the Leeds game will suit Brennan. Leeds press hard in packs, long ball counters may see green grass for him to run into. But I do agree that he can't be cemented into the lineup; Cooper needs to find the right combo

As we play Monday vs Leeds and Friday vs Fulham next week I wouldn't mind seeing him not start on Monday ready to destroy Tim Ream again on Friday like he did towards the end of last season.

I do sometime wonder if Tim still has the nightmares, or if the combination of psychiatrist and medication finally allowed him to start sleeping again.

He does seem to be finding life in the EPL a bit too comfortable at the minute. A fresh and charged up Brennan could start some flashback for the poor lad.

Not for NFFC I'm not interested, passenger so far, not in games enough and no real influence. I trust SC to find the right formula but for me, at the mo it does not contain BJ.
In some ways its not about Brennan at present, its about finding some solidity and a structure that makes us hard to beat but also a threat when we get the ball. I'm not sure we can afford Brennan wafting around waiting for his moment of inspiration at the moment-we need graft from 1 to 11. Stay in games as long as possible when you are under the cosh as we are.
If we can get a foot hold in this division then take the chance on him but only when we've worked out how to do the hard stuff...

100% agree with this. Brennan is a bit naive right now without the ball, plus he is still youngish and looks tired around 60-70 minutes. Bringing him on at 60 or so allows us to stretch the defence. I think using him thsi way over the next dozen or so games (interspersed with some starts too, of course) may be the right formula.

Difference being Wales are clearly using him as a winger rather than a 2nd striker and so that gives him more of a possibility to get down the wing and cross it in to the middle, which he did plenty of last season when we had Davis/Surridge/Grabban in the centre.

Wales of course also have an excellent outlet to get on the end of a cross in Moore who will score plenty of headed goals whatever level he is playing at.

There have been plenty of occasions this season where Johnson or Williams have got a good opportunity down the right but when they come to cross it none of the other players are in the right position (or of course Williams decides to try and shoot or fluffs his cross up totally) because none of them are as instinctive a target man as Moore is (closest is probably Taiwo) or we're just playing midfielders up front.

I think he plays well either as a winger or wide right in a proper attacking front 3. Trouble is I've seen enough so far this season to say we can't afford a front 3 given our midfield problems.
Personally I'd go 5-3-2 with O'Brien, Mangala and whomever of MGW or Jesse in the third CM spot, whichever shows hes prepared to get back and work properly as an attacking midfielder not a wafting 10. I'd play Taiwo and Dennis up front 'cos I think those 2 are going to get the most goals. The only problem is the wingbacks but in all honesty they are not playing as wing backs at the moment anyway because we are being cored out in midfield. If we get parity they can get forward and we can attack with the numbers Steve likes.
I'd have Brennan on off the bench on 70m to change it up...

Caused them problems down the right most of the evening and was unfortunate to not score. Cut back onto his left foot and drived it across goal forcing a great full stretch save from Szczesny

Its so hard with a player like Brennan-none of need to be told what he can do...
Trouble is, as I said before its not really about him its about getting some solidity and bit into this team such that we are in games for 75-80 minutes without being blown away and for me that means changing around, and in turn hes the one I would cut for now because he just hasn't got it in him to work as hard as we need...

Yeah definitely, I know it sounds obvious but if the team was better he'd be much more effective. A better team could afford for him to drift in and out of games more but we're very much in a relegation battle and can't afford to go 90 mins each week with a 'moments' player. Off the bench, yes. In fact I could think of few better but not starting for me right now.
