A level below Lingard?

I rather think they're on a similar level and it isn't high enough.

I hope Lingard's pay is performance and results oriented else I can see this unravelling very quickly
Lingard and MGW link up play has been brilliant, they know where each other are at all times. Lingards work rate has been second to none also.

This is the problem, for me. MGW, Johnson and Lingard can't all start. Awoniyi, Dennis or Surridge have to start.

The defence is what's costing us points, however.

Agreed, and same here.

And considering Lingard is the one who'll be leaving if we go down, personally I'd be playing MGW & Johnno, and rotating them with Lingard on fitness/form.

Agree and we’re also too reliant on the wingbacks to create anything. It worked in the Championship but it’s too predictable in the Prem. We need more creativity playing in midfield.

I agree. People also need to remember that he was playing L1 football not much more than 2 years ago and although hes come a long way hes miles from the finished article. What would be nice would be for him to be allowed a season to acclimatise to the prem in a position hes cut out to play-I am sure he would work out how to be effective if given a chance with the pressure off to some degree. Thats why asking him to play the 9 role is stupid. His skill set isn't even close to being suited to it and I could see his confidence being affected.

For me I would put Dennis in the 9 role (and tell him to play that role without farting around) with 2 of MGW, Lingard or Brennan alongside.
To a word that's where I sit with your post

Part of the issue with the wing backs is that they need someone to bounce the ball off in midfield with some combination play to get in behind and we haven't played the right midfielders with the ability to do that at times

This.
...And in addition they need a 9 to act as a "fulcrum" so theres a progressive inside ball for them as they come up the flank.
I lost count of the number of time Neco in particular came up the right today, looked up for that angled ball into a central forward, when there wasn't the option of the "in behind" ball for Brennan behind the fullback but the 9 wasn't there....(cos we don't have one on the field).
Then he backtracked in order to keep possession.
...and the ball ends up back with Worrall or the keeper

It was ridiculous the amount of times that happened. Nobody showed in that area time after time. We went from being in a position of counter to having to go back and start again far too many times

Yes its pretty fundamental...
And given that our play seem to get slower and slower every time the ball goes backwards (presumably to give the opposition a chance to sort their defensive structure), with no suggestion that there will be a probing ball or a change in type of attack its hard to see how on earth we expected to craft a chance to score.

I didn't see this game so can't comment on it, but overall I wonder if this isn't such a big step up for Brennan that he needs a rest, some coaching and time to get his mind in gear.

A gentle reintroduction would help him and also help Coops in team selection. Trying to fit a quart into a pint pot won't work.

To be fair if he gets a chance he finishes it though. He looks like the best finisher at the club to me. Can we really leave that out of the team?

I must be watching different matches to some of you lot. So far I think he's adapted well enough, he's getting the ball, he's beating his opponent fairly frequently (PL defenders will always be harder to completely strip like he did in the CH and doesn't have Spence's raw pace alongside him either, as well as being a bit more central) has 2 goals and generally looks as threatening as anyone else we have.

He'd be much better doing it out wide and having someone like Dennis or Awoyini getting into the danger area for a cross tbh

Agreed, and although he was knackered, it was clear to see how our attacking dynamic/fluidity began to falter when Lingard came off

He ran around like a mad man against Spurs in that first half and was so good like the rest of the team. But I do think he's lacking consistency and don't think he's comfortable leading the line at this stage so it might be time to bench him and use him and bring him on for what he's good at when needed

I've seen Wales play Johnson as a false 9 and he's been anonymous. But still a threat with a through ball.

He reminds me of Michael Owen in some ways. Hardly in the game at all, but if you thread a perfect ball to him, he's deadly.

He's that type of player. Explosive on the counter. But he has more of a creative mind than Owen did. He still wants to set up others.

Just need to play to his strengths. He's going to be a top player. 2 goals already this season and we've not been at our best.
