We had all these similar conversation last summer when we signed Henderson on loan with a buy option. He was a good signing, did well, but ultimately we ended right back at square one again this summer either chasing him (Henderson) or trying to find a replacement.

Like I keep saying though, hopefully he is as good as the hype around him makes out, next us to that next level and if we can't bring him back next summer, hopefully it makes us a more attractive proposition to some of the bigger names.

He helped Forest stay in the Premier League. Same with Navas.

We wouldn't have been able to outright buy better keepers than those two last season and had we had a weaker goalkeeper we would have probably been relegated. Navas' performance vs Leeds at home single-handedly won us 3 points and the number of games we won by a single goal could have been very different with a weaker keeper.

We're in a better position now than we would have otherwise been had we not loaned players last year with no obligation or option to buy.

I agree with your post, but Navas couldn't win us 3 points in any game.
To win 3 points we have to score, and as Navas didn't score, but we got 3 points, it meant someone else had a hand.
(My Mrs has walked out and says I am in a bitch of a mood this morning, and I'd better be rid of it when she comes back home).

The key difference being we knew what we were getting with both of those signings. I'm not against loaning players, but in the case of Santos we have a 19 year old lad with the majority of his experience in the Brazilian second division and we are all assuming he is a clear upgrade on what we already have. It is ok to say 'well if he is rubbish he won't play' but there appears to be some understanding that he will be getting significant minutes this season which would indicate they expect him to start.

I'm hoping Forest have done enough due diligence to believe they're getting a player capable of making a difference this season...

Whether he starts or not depends on how well he plays and how effective he is in the side. He’ll have to prove he’s a starter.

Wonder whether there’s a “gentleman’s agreement” with Chelsea/Brennan that we’ll do that deal next summer?

Would explain the odds of him staying shortening. Wonder whether any of the other rumoured Chelsea players will turn up.

This means he is in time to play tomorrow, no?
I would imagine so, given the timing of the announcement. Generally, the registration has to be done, by midday, the day before a match.

If that is the case I would have thought we'd want one of their young players on a permanent rather than a straight loan.

As he's been at Chelsea since January, and notwithstanding that he hasn't played any minutes himself, he should at least have seen PL football from a close enough distance to be fully aware of the expectations.

I hadn't realised that he actually made his debut for the senior Brazil team in March. That's a hell of an achievement for a 19 year-old. Obviously seen, not just a potential star, but as someone who's already playing at a very high level. Buckle up!

Think he played against Brighton in preseason fwiw.

First linked (Simon Jones the author as well) to signing in four days.

Could be a few surprises come deadline day.
