Not sure he's going to be 3rd choice.

He has international caps for Senegal which probably puts him ahead of Smith and maybe even Samba.

Although keepers with international caps can still be toilet (Pascolo, Muric, Vlad) and it depends which country (Pants was never first choice for them either) it is the highest level.

When we still had Smith and Pants, had signed Muric on loan in the summer, and had Steele at the club too, how many people thought the new keeper we signed would go into the team?

Smith is clearly being loaned or sold.

As somebody who has to work out when to buy the next pack of bog rolls, all this talk of chucking away money on the wages of a keeper we don't need makes me realise that perhaps football isn't that short of money.

Danny Ward is 27 and has played twice for the teams he is contracted to in almost a decade, yet was nearly ever present for Huddersfield in 2016/17 (the year they went up). If I was a pro I would rather play for a lesser team than sit on the bench forever in the EPL.

I think they must just not really love football any more. Lots more players nowadays aren’t really interested in football but are pros because of the phenomenal rewards.

When you look at it like that, being 2nd (or even 3rd) choice keeper at a big club probably suits them fine.

You can only have 1 goalkeeper playing in your starting eleven (obviously) and it isn't a position where you can 'fill in' if someone gets injured (like a centre back going to right back). Even then, it isn't like you rotate your goalkeeper to keep them fresh, you want consistency.

It is easy to sit here and say career backup goalkeepers don't love the game or whatever. But someone like Stuart Taylor got to be at some of the biggest clubs in the world, with the best facilities, no doubt being paid a handsome wedge, still getting to do something you love. Don't everyone's dream of football is playing away at Gillingham on a cold Tuesday night get pelters from a load of farmers in the home end.

Dropping down a level (or two) doesn't guarantee more game time, just lower pay

You can only have 1 goalkeeper playing in your starting eleven (obviously) and it isn't a position where you can 'fill in' if someone gets injured (like a centre back going to right back). Even then, it isn't like you rotate your goalkeeper to keep them fresh, you want consistency.

It's also a position where - substitutions aren't made for tactical reasons, substitutions are very rarely made for performance reasons and injury/suspension rates are comparatively low.
Reserve Goalkeepers will have to be more patient than most when waiting for a chance.

If you’re good enough to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world, I think you’d be good enough to play Championship football.

Huge clubs don’t buy backup keepers from Gillingham.

I’d agree with what you said about Taylor getting paid shitloads to work in a great environment, but there’s no way he loves football if he’s happy to play less than 100 games in his whole career. He loves the money.

Folks often say it on here "Dont blame him, I'd do the same, the money's there".

And this is where the game's collapsed, there's no drive, no heartfelt inner strive to be your absolute best in the sport you are gifted in, no ambition to get to the top.
