First Team Squad
I really think with any potential signings, the first question should be:

do they improve the 1st X1?

If the answer is no, then move on

We're just bloating an already bloated squad.

And yet...last years problems started when we had to bring in players from outside the first 11 that weren’t good enough.

Three 'keepers are necessary.

Good prospect though he undoubtedly is, in the event of a goalkeeper injury crisis, relying on George Shelvey to step-up would be a big gamble in my opinion.

Thought this last season when we signed Brice which proves that I knew nothing... But really, do we need another keeper?

Sabri clearly doesn't see Smith as competition for Brice, despite having just extended him.

.....or do they provide adequate cover the first X1 or better than our current cover, if not then move on.

Not recruiting based entirely on if they are better than the first X1 won't improve the squad.

Not necessarily. As I remarked earlier, three reasonably experienced 'keepers are now a prerequisite. Peter Shilton was 16 when he was ready to step into men's football. We don't have a modern-day equivalent in our academy.

I can see the reasoning, it simply means that SL thinks that neither Smith nor Shelvey are ready to be either competition for Brice or to replace him in the first team if needed.

I haven't seen Shelvey and he's still young but to be honest agree on Smith.

As with most young developing 'keepers, a loan spell for Shelvey to gain experience would do him a lot of good.

Let's not forget Brice was carrying a knock last season, and it's only been a short pre-season to recover. So that may factor in this move.

yes it would but no lower than the division below. If we have any designs on going up this year he might need to play in the PL.

Not that there is anything wrong with this, we now have more black players in our first team squad than white. Looking at first team profiles on website, we have 14 black and 13 white. Benelouane was a tricky one, if left him in the grey zone, it would be even. like I say nothing wrong with that just an observation.

Diallo is a solid and, by the look of it, relatively inexpensive signing.

As Alf has said, there may be concerns that Brice is a long-term concern who may have to be rested sometimes so it would make good sense on that level.

Having someone pushing Brice daily is a good thing in my book and this arrival should allow us to get Shelvey out on loan too (with a recall option in case of a full-on biscuit attack of course).

If both our senior keepers got injured then we could still get an emergency loan

Not sore of the point of this guy - just seems like another unnecessary drain on the wage bill to me.

Strange choice and strange career. In 18/19 he was first to second choice at Rennes, until a long injury. Then he went to Turkey where he started as first choice and was soon relegated to third.

I suspect he's not coming to provide competition for Samba, but for Smith for the place on the bench. He looks like a third choice keeper, and I know that many managers want three regular keepers (I don't).

Regarding Shelvey, I don't know how talented he is, but if he is indeed a good prospect, then maybe a loan to League One team would do him more good at 19 than being second to third choice for your first team.

We've chosen a different path, incidentally. Tzolakis (he'll be 18 in November) played in the cup final, will start in the first league games and will probably be our second choice keeper this season.

Flashback to Samba’s own arrival when the consensus opinion was “why do we need this guy when we’ve got Muric?”

Yes but we all knew after the first game that Muric was utter squat toilet.
