8 month ban (really 5 months of playing time) is still really harsh.

All for a few bets, Mitrovic got 8 games for pushing a referee, Trippier got 10 weeks for a blatent no lose bet for a mate.

Hate the inconsistency from those in charge of the league, wouldn't have been 8 months if in a top 4 side.

Makes you wonder what punishment will be dished out to Everton come judgement day. (see this has been palmed off already!)

It wasn't a "few" bets though was it. He was charged with 262 i believe, over a 4 year period. That's not an odd flutter, it's weekly bets over a sustained period. He knew the rules and chose to break them.

On the brightside any minor lingering hope of Arsenal getting the title has just evaporated knowing that Man City will be playing a Toneyless Brentford on the last day of the season.

still 8 month ban appears a little excessive. Fine him 8 weeks wages and give him a 4/6 game ban. Donate that fee to anti-betting groups or rehabs etc..

Make you wonder if FA have sought to help him, does he need support? is an average of one bet per week excessive? Could 8 months not being able to do his job drive him to look at other ways (gambling) to pass the time. I don't think the punishment is fit for the offence.

It's not excessive.

Players indulging in betting gives rise to deliberately throwing matches and ruining the competition as a product.

It's no different to people who work in finance having to sell investments if there's a clear conflict of interests, and if they don't and then subsequently get caught they get fired, not told to go on gardening leave for a couple of weeks.

We should probably be grateful that Brentford don’t have any remaining games against teams down the bottom though.
It would have been shameful if they were playing a relegation rival next. Arsenal have blown the title now but again they faced Brentford with Toney and City face them without.

Absolute joke this includes pre season. Any ban should just start at the start of next season. Let him play on this season to make it fair for all, or do the hearing in June after the season.

Joey Barton got 18 months. I think it was reduced in the end

That is poor.

8 months of which at least 2 there is no football?

He shouldn't have been playing for the last 8 months, not the next 8.

Gutless tossers at the FA
Apparently the ban was going to be 6 months but due to the timing of it he gets an extra few months as he'll be off anyway. Don't know how true that is.

He can return to training from September 17!

I was wondering whether they waiting to see how the season panned out before announcing the ban, their last game was against West Ham who could've still technically gone down at the time. It might've opened up a whole new can of worms if they faced a Toney-less Brentford and the rest of us didn't.

It's not inconsistent or harsh at all, Trippier told a mate he wasn't going to Athletico? And they placed loads of money down, he literally had no control over that and confided on a close friend and got essentially a 2.5 month ban, Toney placed just under 250 bets on football and gets 3x the ban of Trippier. The 50k fee is pathetic may as well not bother, 3 days training and he's earnt that back.

Mitrovic got done for violent conduct usually a 3-4 game ban, when realistically it was barely violent conduct and got a harsh ban as a deterrent.

Betting on your own team is soft match fixing, it's right they throw the book at him.

Barton got a similar sentence & he actively bet against his own team a few times - I would guess Toney's might be the same.

If Toney bet on cards I would have banned him for life for match fixing.
