Can we not just tell the hockey and rugger buggers to do one somewhere else and then have a git wass 55,000 stadium with training facilities where the WFCG currently is. Admittedly it’ll cost a packet but winning the European Cup another couple of times will help finance it.

Football has changed since we were last in the top flight. You look at teams who have built a new stadium and had that bounce and also with the publicity the premier league gets have grown their club massively. Brighton for example, Leicester are another that springs to mind, West Ham, spurs.

We have been badly run commercially all my lifetime (1987 my first game). We have been starved of success for 30 years and out of the top flight for 23 yet we have barely ever dropped below 20kg average and with a little success and a tiny bit of marketing are getting full houses regularly. If we do have a consistent spell in the premier league and get savvy commercially and also improve facilities to top class there is no reason why we can’t look to pull in 35-40k. Especially as someone said away followings are bigger. It is just a shame the first stage wasn’t built when first planned.

If you think the time it is taking to receive planning approval for the construction of two blocks of apartments (which is essentially the cause of the delay) is too long - largely because of objections from the many friends and family members of a few dozen rowing club members and associates - can you even imagine the number of years the process would take for an entirely new stadium in Lady Bay.

But other people can do it. And often fairly rapidly.
It is a much different situation than when we were last in the top division. Adding a few thousand extra seats (and tying ourselves further into staying at our present site) does not imho do what we need to do. Just a thought.

By the way, just checked an old thread. 2016.
I just used the framework of David Bowie's 5 years. Only one year out.
Have a look. I was close!

Away from any housing on some soulless out-of-town retail-type site, or on a long-disused brownfield location elsewhere (such as Eastside), maybe so. Seeking planning permission for a completely new stadium on what is still partly a flood plain close to an established residential area like Lady Bay, which Morpeth Edgar suggests, would be laughed out-of-sight.

What renovations are currently taking place at the City Ground? I know the Press Box is being updated, what else?

- New Flood lights
- Miles of higher quality TV cabling
- VAR
- Press Box seats
- New TV advertisment boards (current ones aren't big enough)
- Bigger dugouts

Should pop the away dug out just in front of A-block, they’re a friendly bunch and would make em welcome.

Wish all grounds would revert back to an away end,

I understand sticking em out of the way with restricted views help the home teams but there’s nothing like away fans right behind nets 🤔

I'm a Sunderland fan and I've been reading about the expansion of the City Ground.

I'm interested to know what capacity you think is correct for your club?

When we were doing well under Peter Reid, our ambitious chairman increased the Stadium of Light from 42,000 to 48,000. We initially packed the place out because we we're flying but we've never been as good since. The capacity is too big if we're a poor premier League club or worse. Most fans think we should have stayed at 42,000

All the best for the season ahead

Welcome to the forum mate. What a ground the Stadium of light is too. Probably the best of the industrial estate new builds that came from that era.

42k is probably the magic number for Forest in my opinion as long as there is the possibility for further expansion a few years down the line depending on stabilisation and success.

I think 38-40k is about right for us when the city is buzzing like It is.
Obviously when the big boys come to town we could sell more.
Surprised you think SOL is too big for you. Would expect a few crowds over 40k this season and if and when you make the prem those extra seats will come in handy.

Thanks for your welcome and yes we're very fortunate regarding the stadium

A few years before moving there, we had another ground lined up on the outskirts of the city. It would have ended up as a soulless, out of town stadium because there was no public transport nearby and no atmosphere.

Thankfully it didn't materialize and the stadium of light is well situated, in a central location near the city centre with metros nearby. When your walking over the bridge as a fan, it really feels like your going to a football game. I've been to plenty of away games at new builds in industrial sites and I agree with your point.

I hope you can sort out your stadium expansion soon because demand for tickets will be high after promotion. It's probably harder to expand in the premiership because you have to invest so much in players composted to the championship

We've certainly had our share of Championship players who should have been composted.
