13/14 players isn't enough. It's effectively a suicide strategy.

You need 20 players who, at a minimum, have premier league potential. You can't have a piss weak bench just to make up the numbers.

Definitely. And I still think that players, clubs and agents will use every angle they possibly can to squeeze a few more quid out of us and will cite our chastening performance against Newcastle as evidence that we're desperate and therefore willing to pay more than the going rate to get them in and quickly.

Another point also, is that I feel we're now caught between a rock and a hard place in that we've spent loads of money as we've had to, and deliberately targeted players who we feel are Premier League ready and can get better. But now we're at the stage where the squad still isn't strong enough and there isn't just a bottomless pit of cash so do we continue to bring in the 4/5 players we need and spend £50/60/70m doing so, basically gambling on staying up? Or do we accept that when all fit and firing we've got a base of 13/14 players who can keep us up and now only bring in cheaper players as cover?
To have any chance of staying up, we need to invest in some more quality, in key areas. The aim has to be to stay in the Premier league and we have established the money is there.

The key is not spending too much on players who won't hold their value. It doesn't matter if you spend 150m, if those players will be worth 150m and are easily movable if we do get relegated.

The problem comes if you sign too many players who lose value, and/or are on long term contracts that they couldn't get anywhere else.

So far, we have largely signed younger guys, for seemingly at or below a reasonable market value. If the likes of Niakhate, Richards, Biancone, Mangala or Awoniyi play well in the Prem they could easily double, or triple their value. The two bigger wage guys we have brought in (Lingard and Henderson) we have no commitment to past this season.

The spending so far has been neccesary, proportional and well thought out. It does buy us some wiggle room to spend on some older players or overpay for one or two if needs be. One thing is for sure, we need to find some more quality if we are to stay up.

Thank god we got as many signings done as we did in July. Clubs are a lot less inclined to sell in August, and will likely wait until the final days before making decisions.

How many more do people reckon we need? Our bench at Newcastle was dreadful.

Need proven quality in midfield and up front now so perhaps 3 more players including one on loan.

The bench strength might have to wait till Jan.

I think we need 3 more real quality signings. LWB, midfield player and a forward.

Then we likely need a couple more depth signings who can play in a couple of positions and depending on the forward signing, possibly also a big battering ram of a striker as a change of tactic.

We certainly need another quality striker-our attack looks ‘pop gun’ at the moment,I can’t really see
Surridge cutting the mustard at Premier League level and the very early signs on Awoniyi don’t look all that
promising.
I also agree that we need a quality LWB and dominant midfield player-the problem could be that all the real
talent is hoovered up by established Premier League clubs and we are left with ‘B list’ options.
I’m sorry to be so pessimistic but it doesn’t look great to me at the moment-let’s hope the recruitment team
can pull some rabbits out of the hat and SC can weld the team together quickly.

Sauce salad?
I have us at more:

Cover for Williams,
First choice LWB (foreign loan would do me, given Richards)
Destroyer/competition for Yates (Palace guy)
Lingard competition (MGW),
Striker/forward as competition for Johnson etc,
Garner as cherry on the cake.

Suspect it's Garner or the Palace guy if I'm honest, though I like that he also adds cover at centre half. We owe it to Garner to being him in if there's chance.

That would free a few to leave too - Colback, who I think is worth a squad place fir his experience, Cafu, Taylor, and possibly Mighten, though that would be in exchange fir anothr dribbler, in Josh Bowler.

Greedy? Yes.

The Yates and Richards injuries are probably a good lesson for what we'll need to deal with. Things look a bit thin without them.

At full strength with the current list I'm guessing our preferred line up will become :

Henderson ,
Worrell, McKenna, Niakhate
Williams, Mangala, Yates, Richards
Lingard,
Johnson, Awoniyi

That leaves Colback, O'Brien, Toff, Cook, Biancone , Surridge as (arguably) PL worthy bench players (you can sub some into the starting 11 but you get my drift. And I'm excluding Aguilera at this stage). It doesn't take many injuries before we're getting thin, though there is some positional versatlity in the squad, there's not a huge amount of dynamic presence on early evidence. And let's be honest, some are unknown quantities at this stage. We need a few more.

We’re always going to be light on players should we get a few injuries.

It takes multiple transfer windows to form a squad of prem players, if we sign 3 more I will be happy as on paper our 11 would be decent with as good a bench as we could of hoped for considering what we started with.

It’s already going to be difficult to blend this team together with 12 signings never mind if we sign 20.

Yeah, i think three or so more and see how things look in January. The WC break might work in our favour, not as many matches played before the next window.

We're being linked with multiple LB's so you'd think that'll be one. A mid and forward to finish?

Still weird to comprehend that we're trying to put a list together in the PL !

Wonder if it’s worth asking about a season loan for Bertrand? He’s well out of favour down the A46 - and would facilitate monies being spent elsewhere.

1. Doubt they would let him go, their right back is out for most of the season & I know he is a LB but they have a few that cover both sides.
2. He is 33 now (unbelievably) & not convinced he suits our system as a wing back

Not sure I agree with needing a left wing back. How long is Richards out for? It would be a loan until Christmas for me there maximum, we don't need three players in that position. Toffolo may have been signed for cover, but now it's the time for him to provide that cover, otherwise why bother signing him?

I kind of agree but the club seem to disagree.

I dunno why we wouldn't target a RWB & maybe play Neco Williams at LWB for a few games. For me we still need a backup RWB, if Neco gets injured we have no cover.

The guy from Man City seems to have gone quiet, wouldn't suprise me if he ends up as the final Prem loan.

Only thing I can think of is that Cooper has seen enough in a few weeks on the training pitch and in matches to make him think we need someone else.

He doesn't appear to feel the same way about Williams hence why we've not been linked with more RBs.

Biancone is the only option for RWB cover, in an ideal world we sign genuine competition but I think as things stand that gets pushed down the priority list. Maybe something to reassess in Jan, hopefully Neco stays fit

Don’t disagree - but he didn’t even make the bench on Sunday.

Post suggesting Harry Winks is a target, but this doesn't seem to be backed up by any evidence source. I realise most people will be shocked by that statement.

Considering the amount of business we've got done already, with three weeks to go of the window, it's been pretty good.
Obviously we need more but clubs are understandably cagey with whether or not to let players go.

Think this could drag on a bit then all of a sudden one or two of our targets that were previously unavailable shake loose.
