I havent looked but I would imagine that any team that loses it's first 5 games is 100% nailed on to go down.

In fact I just checked. Sunderland did it twice and went down meekly on both occasions. Even Derby didn't do it in their record breaking season.
Ah, who cares? No one had ever got promoted having gained 1 point from the first 7 Championship games either. Cooper's side will be "unstoppable"* once they have momentum.

* relative term, doesn't mean we'll smash City and Chelsea, just Liverpool and ManU scum.

It is such a small sample size to take as well, promoted teams that start badly - probably 1 team a season and the chances are 1 or 2 of the promoted teams will go down anyway. Teams start badly every single season and end up fine. If we have a bad start it certainly doesn't mean we are doomed just as if we have a decent start we are safe.

We have a challenging first five games but then a comparatively easy next three. Let's look at where we are after that instead? It's also a natural contemplation period as we break for boring Internationals*.

(one of which I will be attending, even though they're boring).

The recruitment has been A* Grummitt, really well done - contract lengths, profile of players, positions, prices, all spot on so far. You look at how everybody across the Prem appears to be struggling to sign players, we have blown them out the water.

But... it is still a monumental task to stay up. It is a new team against a league full of teams that never change & probably the strongest Prem ever ATM. You have to assume half the signings will fail just like every window (unless the clubs recruitment play a blinder like last season). However Cooper will get those extra percentages by doing what he does best in man management & coaching. He will be our X factor, but it's still going to be a huge achievement if we survive. The summary of squad values I posted yesterday sums it up of what we are up against.

The point is however that promotion came so quick for us, you can never "get promoted too early" but we are playing the hand we were dealt so well. The recruitment has set us up for years & the makeup of our squad is being built. For me it doesn't matter if we go down because we have set ourselves to come back up with the players we have signed, and then we will come back up with a settled side and can show a more structured ambition. I don't care if people call me defeatist, it's a huge task to stay up, if we do we have had a superb season. If Cooper & Dane are still here in a years time I won't care what would have happened in between because we are in good long term hands.
Absolutely nailed on.

A really important consideration are injuries as well. Our starting 11 can compete, but, even with Lingard is going to struggle. With there being 9 (?!) substitutions available, the more established clubs can swap quality for quality and bring on fresh legs... In the final third of the pitch we're painfully short.

Swapping Johnson for Mighten and Lingard for Cafu are serious downgrades. Have the former two players injured and out for a few months and we're starting with Cafu and Mighten and filling the bench with..... We'd have to cancel Dale Taylor's loan and bring him back from League Two! In the championship it's possible to 'make do' when stretched to that level and the quality of opposition isn't always good enough to exploit if we are carrying a few players. The Premier League is a very different beast.

The recruitment so far has been excellent and I don't for one minute think we're 'doing a Norwich'. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if we did get relegated. Only this time, our stay in the Championship will be short term and on being promoted again, similar ambition could be spread across 4-5 players, not 12-15. At that point, we'll really be ready to compete.

Good post, but when and where did Dale Taylor go RR?

Cooper said 'we have to' get more players in and sooner rather than later in his post County interview. He sounded a touch annoyed to me, did he to anyone else?

.... but were those Sunderland teams still learning to play together? I believe the advantage we have is that if we lose the initial run of games, we will be working on making the team play better together in those games. By virtue of the fact that most of our players are new, the only way is up and there will be a big difference in our level in the first games compared to for instance after the break. This is not the same as a team that just played badly and had no way to improve....

I don't think we can afford to lose every game in August though, especially against Everton. I think we need to be aiming to at least get a couple of results (something from Everton, maybe a point or two from the other fixtures) if we have any real ambitions of survival.
I agree-as I can’t see Bournemouth,Leeds and Fulham being easy meat in September either.

He hasn't (Swan has been loaned) but then I think it's probably likely that DT will go out on loan if the club wants him to get regular football this season.

Depends on the plan I guess. If they think he'd get chances in the PL and having him make the odd sub app is better for him as opposed to bringing in another player, and considering as he's only 18 or what he won't contribute to the 25, then he might stay around.

He seemed to be used sparingly last season - certainly much less than the other strikers.
Wouldn’t surprise me to see him included in some match day squads given the 5 sub rule - he could be special.

He's only eighteen though so maybe they thought that he wasn't ready last year, but a year or two can make a difference at that age with the right players.

Guess it depends what Dale and the club feel is best for him. Fin Back is on loan and is older than Dale in a position we don't have a lot of numbers in either.

Now we are in the Premiership, will we (supporters living abroad) still be able to pay to see matches on Forest TV?

And the main issue is keeping Cooper whatever happens. I'd be far happier if he'd signed his contract...

I know there is a Cooper specific thread but anyone any idea why he hasn't signed.
I don't want to hear all the Eveing post platitudes about it "only being a matter of time". As far as I am concerned, a happy coach who has been backed and is offered better terms puts his signature on the paper within short order-so whats going on?

Yeah, don't listen to the platidues in the evening post.

The real issue is the carpet in the manager's office. His Mrs don't like it see. But Mitladis, the owner's son, doesn't have an office so refuses to sanction any changes until he has his own office. But, until the new stand is built, there's no room at the inn. So it's come to an impasse. It's not fractious like, as everyone's in love with everyone else, but that's the intrigue.

I know this may seem a bit controversial but perhaps they are all concentrating on getting the players they all want in before they finalise the manager's contract rather than pandering to the demands of internet alarmists who demand to know the club's business at every turn.

Alternatively, he isn't signing a new contract and they will let it run down so he can leave.

Take your pick.
