Standard of Referees (Sponsored by Steven Reid)

Thought they should have had a red for the two footed lunge.

But not much to grumble about, really.

They said it was ok because he slipped? I thought it didn’t matter.

Sky made a fair bit of the garner shirt pulling but I thought it was fairly standard. Defender trying to stick to his man. Berge trying to go down. There was certainly plenty of it from both teams and in the division generally.

But I thought the ref was very good.

Nah, lost his footing.

Ref was good, no qualms at all, which is nice to be able to say.

Yup agreed. Lost control, dangerous two footed lunge. Red card all day.

I wasn’t massively incensed by it as he probably did lose his footing. But I just thought it was a case of if you are reckless and the challenge is out of control it doesn’t really matter how or why it was.

Re: Standard of Referees "Numpty-Hood-Watch"

It’s not the worst refereeing nonsense we’ve had let’s face it. Only thing Marriner did that pissed me off was when he played and advantage then mysteriously pulled it back despite us still very much having an advantage. Everything else was okay.

I thought the ref was decent today, I’ve got to give some praise with how much shit I give officials.

Anyone concerned how VAR in the final may impact our "marking"? It's incredible what McKenna has gotten away with this season. Full on rugby tackles.

It is a concern but in this division literally ever set piece is defended and attacked in the same manner. It isn’t just us.

We have had worse, he needed to stop the blocking from set pieces but we also get players in headlocks whilst defending them so I suppose overall we can't complain.

The linesman that kept getting their offsides right first half was also very good.

I see Michael Oliver is the ref on Tuesday. Let's see how that goes because he's one of the better refs.

They will probably just adapt their game. I don't think it will be an issue.

McKenna knows what he is doing and knows when the ref isn't looking.

McKenna worries me less than Joe. He’s an excellent tackler but he seems to
Have developed a fetish for giving the opposition attacker 1/2 a yard and pulling out a big slide tackle.
He needs to be careful because he’s asking for trouble with VAR

Has there been a penalty given against McKenna during set piece routines this season?

Agree with that. Will var operators be instructed to follow the same level of leniency,; I'm not so sure

I'm not sure Garner was pulling his shirt. He had his arms loosely round Berge so he didn't lose his run, but wasn't pulling him. Berge dived looking for a penalty.

Don Goodman the twat wouldn't shut up about it.

They made a thing of it at half time on sky too. Maybe I’m biased, well I am biased but I didn’t see much in it and definitely thought berge was trying to buy it cheaply.

Garner had his arm round him, quite normal thing at corners. How Berge’s legs gave away is the mystery.

McKenna got away with a couple earlier in the season, seems to have calmed it down recently though.

Made me laugh how many replays they showed of that but no focus on them blocking Samba at all. They scored from one and Surridge cleared another off the line where Gibbs held him like Garner was doing to their player.

Clearly a premeditated tactical ploy from Sheffield United.

I thought that, too. Seems like they saw the sending off earlier in the season and thought that they would up their usual corner routine to bug Samba and rile him enough for another red card.

He moaned at the officials a lot, but never took the bait. I hope the goalkeeping coaches keep reminding Brice to keep cool.

I hope, too, that Oliver will be on the lookout for all the offences at corners etc, because I'm sure Sheffield are more cu0lpable than we are.

He was clipping Samba everytime he tried to go past Gibbs White.

It is why it was never given as a proper foul because the referee can't see it through all the bodies.

It should be on the linesman to watch the keeper being blocked.

Oliver is easily the best ref in England right now. His feel for the game is fantastic. Watch how little running he has to do. That is what you call reading the game. As for Marriner yesterday, he's a so so ref (by Prem standards) but I thought he did well. Concerning the slip/two footed lunge---I thought Mariner did well to recognize it as a slip, made sure the player wasn't seriously hurt, and then caution him. If the slip had caused a serious injury, I am quite sure he would have sent the guy off. This is thinking on your feet refereeing and I applaud it. Outcomes can often determine sanctions (if the ref is smart enough to juggle that).
