Absolute nonsense to blame Yates for that first goal. Cunha completely toys with Omobamidele on that run. Slows him down 2 or 3 times and then runs away from him. Omo really needs to deal with him early, instead he lets him into the box & then over-commits himself & has his feet in a mess before Yates even gets into the frame.

Even if Omo thinks Yates was covering on the inside, it's still absolutely terrible defending to let a forward come back inside from that position.

Yates is poor in possession and has been ever since he got into the team but there seems to be an effort from some people to pin everything on him.

They were both to blame. Poor dealing with the man from omo and poor positionally from Yates

Watch it again. All Yates has to do is go goal side and position humself between the ball and the goal,. Why on earth does he stop his run then run to the outside of Cunha? is he trying to stop him running towards the corner flag? If it had been Sangare people would have been going apoplectic.

I like Yatesy but, if we're fair, he's not been great last few games and I think Dominguez deserves the nod for Everton.

I'd have to watch it back but Omabimadele did most things right for their first. When Yates arrived (and good that he did) Cunha was shown away from goal. From what I remember he's allowed him to turn past him. As I said, I'd have to watch it back.

It's also easy to try and lay blame for a goal. That was, in fairness, an excellent solo goal. We shouldn't beat ourselves up. That said, Dominguez and Danilo next game please. Danilo was very good yesterday.

Yates should have been tucked inside rather than trying to engage him. Providing cover behind and protecting the box was exactly what Yates should have been doing.

Agree.

Omo and Yates both conspire to do everything wrong in the first goal. It was pathetic by both of them and Nuno must have been banging his head on the dugout wall by it.

Re Everton, while I take the point he's not particularly in form and cost us a goal (nearly two) yesterday, I think Yates is exactly the type we will need to combat them - big, physical side.

(We could probably do with a bang in form Sangare for it too but that ain't happening.)

The Dom - Dan pairing will have to wait... (I can't see it working to well defensively either fwiw - need a bit more strength in there for me.)

I think Yates is technically limited and doesn’t seem to be able to really affect or influence games. It can be frustrating that he tends to slow things down, gives away cheap fouls too often, and athletically seems to come up short for this level.

However his mentality and determination will get him the nod, especially in backs to the wall situations. I think we have quite a few players who are technically very good but perhaps a bit weak or just new to the PL in general.

Yates is likely to be vocal and try and set the tone.

I don't think Yatesy acquitted himself well with their first goal, but I think he gambled that Omobamidele would hold Cunha up and show him towards the corner flag, where he would intercept. That goal was mainly down to incredibly poor defending from Omobamidele allowing himself to get turned as he did.

How many successful sides have two small blokes in midfield? You need the physicality a Yates type brings.

If we stay up we have to find a way of making sure that Yates is a bench warmer, not a starter.

He starts for me against Everton, but only because you can't trust Sangaré.

We can’t be having 2 little un’s in midfield against Everton can we?

We don't have the height across the rest of the team to try and go toe-to-toe with Everton in an aerial battle.

We win the game by dominating the ball and engaging them high up the pitch. Give fouls away in the middle third.

I've had more discussions/arguments about Yatesy than you can shake a stick at, my view usually seems to match that of our managers and pundits so I just let it go now and channel my inner Sir Brian.
. I'm not bashing Yates here either btw Wes. My last comment was tongue in cheek and I actually agree that he had positioned himself well in order to pick up that loose ball. Yates has got his attributes and some are definitely needed for us at times. I just think we're losing more than we're gaining from his inclusion at the moment.

Yates deserves his place for how much he gives for our club. Shame others who have potentially more natural talent, don’t have an ounce of his passion/care/determination.

Sangare really messed the season/progression up in my eyes. The club clearly identified that we needed more in centre mid, and seemingly addressed that issue. But it’s all gone badly.

Brought in Murillo and Omobamidele to bolster an okish defence, but Filipe and Boly injuries, plus Niakate out of favour have killed that.

I feel we kinda made the right moves last summer with the above three players, the summer signings in total just all haven’t worked except Murillo. Omobamidele has done well.

I've watched it several times. Yeh, he could have tucked in behind but I maintain the bigger issue was Omobamidele allowing a striker to carry it 50 yards & then getting turned far too easily as soon as he's backed into the box.

I presume he runs on the outside because he wants to win the ball & thinks Omo is forcing him away from goal? Which is a fair enough assumption as I wouldn't expect a competent CB to get done so easily in that position.

The danger isn’t outside, the immediate danger is if the defender does get turned. Which good strikers do occasionally. It wasn’t difficult to anticipate this scenario. Watching it live in that split second hesitation and failing to close the space looked like a huge error.

There was a sequence late in the first half when Gueye took the ball and waltzed, and I really do mean waltzed, from the halfway line to the very edge of our box. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

We all know Ryan's shortcomings but at least, for the most part, he gets the basics spot on. Hopefully he'll be back in the team from now on after today's showing.

We gave their midfield the freedom of the park, which was exactly what wasn't needed for that match,

Many wanted Dominguez in for this game. I wasn't one of them. I personally think Dominguez is too lightweight and Yates offers abit more. We are going to need his fight in midfield these last few games.
Dominguez should have offered more in possession. I assume that Nuno's plan was to play more football then Everton and beat them that way. Unfortunately most of his progressive players forgot how to pass forwards. Danilo wasn't great but I did see him try some forward passes which is more than Reyna, Dominguez, CHO and MGW managed in the first half.
