He’s also a decent centre half when called on. Looks like we’re getting thin on the ground in that position
He could play in any position and wouldn't let the team down.

I fancy him to get as many appearances as any other outfield player in the squad this season. He'll be our main man.

I dont expect Yates to stand out and excel for us in the PL but he will definitely not be fazed by playing against superstars. I could imagine him nipple-twisting De Bruyne or something at a corner then joking with the ref about it.

I think the system we'll begin to play will have Lingard and Gibbs-White behind a striker so there'll be a need for 2 CMs that have enough of an engine to cover the entire pitch, Yates has that in spades. So far it seems like O'Brien and Mangala do too so it's good competition.

I can see him starting the next away game. I actually thought Lingard did well when we were able to get him involved, but I'd like to see what Yates could offer with Mangala and O'Brian (or whoever else it may be)

He'll close down as we know, got that bit of height if needed, he'll get back and he'll break into the box. I know he's not really a "number 8" or "number 10" or whatever it is these days, but I can see him offering something in the prem in that sort of slightly more advanced of a three.
Can see us going with a midfield three in our next couple of games against Tottenham and Man City. Lingard to the bench for me.

For that miss late in the game, I thought he burst into the box and had a shy, just as the ball was destined for MGW, who surely would have put it away.

He is a goal threat from CM, there are few players that can do that with consistency anymore and if he makes the step up he will be massive.

He should have scored the winner, when a guy of his size arrives in the box you can’t defend it.

Lovely finish by Yatesy against Grimsby last night. He's one of our own, the way we're progressing as a club alongside his development, I'm hopeful we can match his ambitions and financial worth, in which case I'm sure he wouldn't have his head turned. Keep it up Yatesy! COYR

That’s the key for him if he wants to develop into a solid consistent prem level midfielder. Not sure a holding defensive CM position fits him that well at this level-but he does get up and down the pitch well and has that knack of arriving in the box at the right time. Allied with his size it makes him a threat for sure and if he can get his accuracy improved and get more of his shots and headers on target he’ll be a serious asset and worth plenty.

That goal last night was one hell of a finish, technique timing all on point, brilliant pass as well by Dennis.

Him being able to recreate that a dozen or so times this season is what will define him as a solid Premier league player or not.

I dont like him trying to create something, he needs to leave that to others, his job should be breaking stuff up and then timing his run and getting on the end of pull backs or crosses like last night.... he could realistically be the difference between 5 or 6 places in this league, he's just got to be consistent.

Ironically he could have won it for us Saturday with a similar chance coming at him from the other wing but blazed it over, the promising thing is no keeper in the world would have saved that last night League 2 keeper or Prem.

It's all about mid-table...
You know you've got the best player at the club if not the league, when supporters who know their football try and pick little holes in their performances, and I get that, some find it hard to change their mind when it's set from a long time ago.

That "chance" to win the Everton game, came at 100mph and I don't think a player in the world would have buried it, maybe Messi.

What should be focussed on is the fact he was on the end of it, 90% of players in his position wouldn't have been.

We have a fukin gem and everybody will realise it when he's absent, even the West Ham game we rode our fukin luck dint we? For me, many of their chances don't happen with Ryan in there.

I don't want to seem I disappreciate the rest of the team but at this present time in my humble opinion, Ryan Yates IS Nottingham Forest.

Launching yourself into those situations at that pace makes controlling the shot very hard, which is probably why not many people do it. But our Ryan backs himself, he knows that if you connect it’s unstoppable. Love the way he had the same chance at Everton - blazed it too high, then comes back 4 days later and buries it with an improved technique. There can’t be anyone that works on his game with more effort and concentration than this lad. I’m fully on board with Raymondo on this one, Ryan Yates is fast becoming first name on the sheet.

As a great philosopher once wrote, „If you don‘t buy a ticket, you won‘t win the raffle“.

Yatesy backs himself to get into those goalscoring positions, and as we have seen, he is getting better and better at scoring from them. It has really been fantastic to see him shut the doubters up and continue to improve, and under the tutelage of Steve Cooper, he is fast becoming one of the most complete players in the squad, and there is plenty of scope for him to get even better this season, and in seasons to come.

He almost reminds me of a young Roy Keane, what with his dynamism in that box-to-box role. And yes, that would be high praise indeed if he can get anywhere near what The Irishman achieved, but, why not?

I used to think he should base his game on Soucek at West Ham, but after seeing him at the city ground & on the opening day - Yates is faster, stronger and a better player. And that’s a nailed on starter that’s played for a side that’s finished 6th & 7th in the last 2 seasons.

The only thing that will stop Ryan is himself, he will physically dominate any midfielder in the league and if he keeps making runs forward he will score goals.

I always thought Yates would become a Kevin Nolan type (Nolan had him at county iirc?). Nolan was an easy player to bash but had a few outstanding seasons before his decline.
Very underrated player, I think he stayed at Bolton for too long as as he got better and better in his twilight years at Newcastle and West Ham

I love his desire to get on the end of those, but the type of gilt-edged chance that Ryan missed don't come often at this level, so he has to either stick them in or at least work the 'keeper.

Said it before Ryan sticking them away is the difference between 5 or 6 places in this league for us.... if he scores that V Everton we win, if he scores today I think we get a draw, that's 3 extra points already we could have had. In between he sticks one away V Grimsby.
