Thing is, he could play 2 or 3 years, have some kind of get out clause and go back to Italy at 27 or 28 and try to win a few more things that actually matter.
That assumes a top flight club would actually want him after spending a few years playing in a retirement league. His stock will have dropped massively after having played at such a low level for that amount of time.

He'll make a lot of money in the short term, but his long term career prospects will be severely diminished by this move.

Yup, unless the Saudis somehow succeed in their plans - and I'd be very surprised if it ever amounted to more than an entertainment league - he's considerably richer but will no longer be an attraction for anyone outside that area afterwards.

In fairness though, he's probably made more than his career earnings otherwise in one move/4 years, so anything else is a bonus.

The thing is for the Saudis, this sportswashing project won’t ever get into the top competitions - like the UEFA ones, because if UEFA have any sense, they would prevent any Saudi franchise from getting anywhere near their competition.

Oh. Wait.

I think people would certainly take a flyer based on past history. If (big if) players continue to get picked for the national team then they'll be no problem there.

This lad only has a couple of caps for Brazil to his name, so isn't established at international level yet. Don't think this move will do him any favours with regards to his international prospects going forwards, though I'm sure he knew this when he decided to take the money.

Yep, it’s not retirement at all. He’s winning f*** all at Roma and likely not here in all honesty, so 2/3 years over there, still young enough to finish his career off in Europe. Jobs a good un for him.

You must lose some sharpness not playing at the top level. He’s not the finished article either. He’ll get more money but there is no honour in going over there. With Forest you would be playing in the land where football was invented (sort of), for a team with a big fan-base and illustrious history, and in a competition that is the most watched league in the world. The alternative is a vacuous mega money, yellow Bugatti, LV luggage vomfest

I admit I would find it difficult to choose £10m over £40m but it really is selling your soul

Other than the Saudi league and Saudi Cup, what other competitions do Saudi clubs play in?
Next move by the SPIL will probably be to force European governments to pressurise UEFA into admitting Saudi clubs into the Champions’ League.
After that they will allow all the mercenaries to take Saudi nationality and then buy the World Cup, winning it with their team of mongrels.

Agree some form of Champions League membership/rival must be on the cards somewhere.

Taking Saudi Nationality wouldn’t allow them to play for Saudi if already played internationals…but their children…

Not too fussed about missing out on this one.
Consistently out performed by Smalling and will be most remembered for his mistakes against Lazio more than anything.

Anyone know how UEFA currently works as if the Saudi clubs wanted to join the ECL they'd need to be in UEFA.

I know we have Turkey and Russia in there, but they have territory in Europe, even if it's just a bit - and I think some of the former SSR countries try and qualify for the Euros and WC through UEFA groups, yet might technically be in Asia. But even then they could probably claim they used to be Russia which is considered part of Europe, which Saudi Arabia (post-colonisation) never has.

If Saudi Arabia did want to join Europe then it would also mean their national side would have to be up against Euro sides to get into world cups which would probably mean they wouldn't - unless they milked the naturalisation rules which I think at present mean a player needs to live there for a few years (Felipe has Spanish nationality) and then they'd be able to count as uncapped (like when England almost picked Cudicini) but if they were already capped for another country not sure they can. Children could meet nationalisation rules if they had lived there long enough or were born there, but they'd also have to want to be football players and be good enough surely. Not every son of a footballer is Erling Haaland.
