That said, unfortunately he's going to Saudi Arabia. The most reliable journalist in Rome is Filippo Biafora (check him on Twitter). He says al-ahly have offered 35 Mln to Roma and 9 mln to him.

Another incredible thing about this situation is that all these players are not going to pay taxes there.
That inevitably increases the Saudi threat as far as the future of the European market is concerned.

Its this that puzzles me, in fairness to the lad €10m a year or €200k a week is not just quadruple his salary if you account for tax.

If we offered him the £5m he purportedly wanted he would get roughly half after tax which is a fortune obviously, to match the Saudi contract he'd have to be paid £400k a week which is probably Haaland territory and without disrespecting him (Or going down the "Hes shit anyway" avenue) hes not anywhere near that level as a player.

Its understandable why players will be attracted to the big money but if they offered the same wage tax free they'd still be financially way better off, the fact that they're paying this guy double that defies logic.

I think this window at least we perhaps have to get used to setting a barometer for agents to use us as a means to get anstupid Saudi offer. Like Willian, on £50k a week, we offer £100k a week which Fulham match then Saudi come in and offer £200k, potentially without our intervention the offer he gets from Saudi is the £100k.

Well if he came to Forest (or more likely if he came to England, Aston Villa) he'd get to test himself in a better league (plus European football at Villa) and if he did well would catch the eye of bigger clubs that can win silverware and improve his international prospects. That's all gone now though, the pay day in Saudi Arabia is all he'll have, very different to playing in the Premier League or other top European league.
No that’s true I agree with you Saudi is all about the money at this point and potential. You never know if Saudi continue this spending they’ll have a good league. However leaving Roma to play for Forest is about money in view with the added caveat that it is the best league in the world.

Leave the lad alone I say. The premier league has only become the best in the world because of money. La Liga was only better in its heyday because of money. Now the Saudis are using money. Hell why would you leave Rome under one of the best managers of all time playing ina better team than Forest and in Europe to come here. If it wasn’t a money thing. I love Forest more than anything on this planet but what we are saying about him now is what Roma fans would be saying when they saw us linked. Money is the deciding factor in football if always has been.
Exactly, the exact same thing we do is what we are moaning about the Saudi's doing.

About a decade ago, in the Torres era, many foreign players were asking for sums that were net of taxes. Whether that's still a thing I don't know.

Roger Ibanez is a dickhead. And I won’t hear a word said to the contrary.
The exodus to the Saudi league is frankly depressing. “Man turns down incredibly lucrative contract for a significantly more lucrative contract”. The naked greed and short-termism is so disappointing. I can kind of understand it for a player of 32-34 years’ of age. But 24?!

Personally, I couldn't take Saudi money on human rights principles.

But outside of that, why wouldn't players go and earn 4x as much for what will likely be half the actual work/exertion.

It's a career for these guys and they can earn generational wealth in a matter of 2 or 3 years.

I don't agree with going to Saudi, but people getting up in arms about being outspent by another league is pretty funny considering that's what the Premier League has done to the rest of the world.
I posted something similar on the Saudi Sportswashing thread not long ago when people were outraged by the Mbappe offer, as if ridiculous transfer fees / wages are something they invented!

We just avoided relegation and are now willing to buy one of, if not the best PSV player :ROFLMAO:

And last season we took the two best players from a team that were the best team on their entire continent.

Because it's a medieval shit hole that's run by people with views from the dark ages & I wouldn't want to live there

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but if you had to tough that out (poor players living like kings) for a year to basically financially secure you and your family forever then you’d absolutely do it. No ethics or morals will stop a player doing that; Mbappe is the exception, not the rule.

Ibanez will be financially secure for the rest of his life even if he didn't move to Saudi Arabia though.

We are talking about an already obscenely rich person (with plenty of offers other than Saudi Arabia that would have set him up for life). Its not really that life changing for a person who is already a multimillionaire. Whatever option he chose, he's not going to struggling to pay the leccy bill or find himself stacking shelves at Aldi any time soon.

There's always opportunities for me to go to Saudi in my current role or similar and potentially double my salary but I havent because i don't want to live there

"Nottingham Forest Are Premier League"
I think there's a fair amount of kidology going on with the Saudi money, however negatively folk view the country or their league.

The Saudi salary offers are often double the PL ones, the absence of tax effectively quadrupling earnings. Given most westerners, and highly paid footballers in particular, will live and work in air conditioned luxury and simply have to keep their mouths shut on subjects that often don't interest them anyway, it's not a stretch to see it as an attractive option.

Players who are coming to ward the end of their careers will take a payday, players purely motivated by money will take a payday, players who think they may not have what it takes to play at the highest domestic/international level will take it and I'm pretty sure most folk on here would too.

I'm not too fussed about the Saudi's overall record, but quadruple my salary and I'll get over it.

Totally agree, FIFA should insist on global transfer windows of January and July only across the board - then every league would have a close season window and a mid season window
Except that not all leagues are on the same schedule (see MLS)

Really disappointing for a 24 yo whose best football is clearly ahead of him to choose the Saudi League but everyone has their own priorities. I feel Ibanez would have really been a squad strengthener in an area of need. Not a ton of players out there with his attributes in our range, IMO.

Thing is, he could play 2 or 3 years, have some kind of get out clause and go back to Italy at 27 or 28 and try to win a few more things that actually matter.
